On July 21st, if there isn't some kind of negotiated deal in place, the judge might start getting more involved. So set your expectations accordingly.

When they get involved, will they be making judgements or just forcing certain arguments already debated to be decided in some way? Or something else entirely?

I just remembered there's a place in Austin that Mark Bankston and Bill Ogden took Liz Williamson to that had large margaritas.

They got buzzed and forgot to say, "This is off the record, right?"

Is this "the judge will glare sternly while tutting once again" involvement or will this involve actual consequences? Since it seems like there's zero reason for any of them to stop trying these kinds of shenanigans at this point.

To be clear, right now what's happening is court-supervised mediation, where Jones and the plaintiffs are supposed to negotiate a deal between themselves while the judge vaguely keeps an eye on the process to poke and prod anyone who's being too annoying. This is because if Jones cooperates enough and recognizes that he has no choice but to give up a lot of what he has, mediation could theoretically go faster and smoother than actual court proceedings do.

If they don't have a deal negotiated by July 21st*, then mediation will be abandoned and the case will go back to actual court, with the judge holding some level of trial over it, deciding a final outcome, and imposing it on both sides whether they like it or not. If things go that far, the end result is likely to be worse for Jones than if he'd cooperated with the mediation. However, it'd take at least a few more months for this to reach a resolution; I wouldn't expect Jones to have to actually start paying in 2023.

But in terms of "actual consequences", most of Jones' known assets have been frozen or taken over by the bankruptcy trustee, so he's limited in the amount of money he can spend. Moreover, said trustee is extensively investigating the books to find more of the money Jones has hidden away. He's already far worse off than if he'd just paid up in the first place, because dragging it out like this is enabling a far more detailed examination of his assets and transactions.

*It's entirely possible this deadline could be pushed back, depending on how the mediation is going and how the parties feel about it.

The problem is that, with the absurd level of blatant shenanigans, I have no confidence that every piece of money laundering will be discovered. The longer this takes, the better the chance that Jones just dies of a massive stroke or something while doing cocaine with money he's not supposed to have but still mysteriously appears. It's good that his finances have been frozen, but there's simply no credible incentive for him OR HIS LAWYERS to not continue to gently caress around. The worst case seems to be that he's just in the same hole he was going to be in at this point, and the Texas bar will just be Double Sternly Tutting at bankston etc.

To be clear, I consider Jones dying before the end of this process to be a loss for society, because that means he actually got away with some of it.

I'm pretty sure that even if Jones died his estate could be garnished, and they could just sell his studio and poo poo without going through the whole deal of letting him continue his scams so he can pay the creditors.

His dad did admit in a deposition that it's a one-talent operation, after all. Without Alex, the operation is only as good as the value of the liquidated net assets.

So how much power do the creditors have to depose Jones the senior? How much does he owe them specifically? His last round of testimony was actually pretty worthwhile so this question is of some interest, prurient as it may be.

Let's flip this debacle around and look at it from the other end. Alexander is visited by the ghosts of pundits past present and future tonight and cooperates the best he possibly can at this point.

What does this get him? What's the error bars on this mediation? On a scale of 'pay most of the judgement on a schedule' to 'summary execution'.

"Pay most of the judgment on a schedule" is something he can't escape no matter what. The bankruptcy is here to work out fine details like "how should the money be split up between the various people he owes it to", "how quickly should the schedule require him to make payments", "how many of his assets should be liquidated for quick cash", "how much income should he be allowed to have until the bankruptcy is paid", and so on. The idea of meditation is to help the parties work these details out themselves.

If he cooperated in the mediation, he could probably get a better set of conditions on his repayment than a pissed-off judge would come up with. And if he'd been more generally forthcoming about his finances, he probably would have been able to sneak a bit of a nest egg through. The more money he attempts to hide, the more scrutiny he invites, which makes it more difficult for him to hide anything at all.

Volmarias

His "repayment" is already effectively "everything you will ever possibly make until you die, minus an allowance on the schedule mandated by the law, as overseen by a third party using a forensic accountant and backed by an extremely motivated oversight" so I'm confused as to how that would change. I'm genuinely curious, not (just) contrarian on this point; would he be allowed a larger personal salary? More time to not pay? What are the actual better conditions if he's already lost everything?
