I believe it. I saw them a few times and they were always stellar live. I just don't dig the creative direction they took.

I also saw them on that tour where they played all of Blackwater Park and then a song from each of the other albums. That ruled.

To your point about him complaining, I'll generally always side with the artist in situations like that. Metal especially seems to attract people that just want more of the same forever. After like fifteen years of perfecting their sound, it's only logical that he'd want to do something different.

Personally I liked Heritage, was mixed on Pale Communion, and I think the stuff past that has some good ideas but I don't click with most of it.

I didn't pay a lot of attention to what he said specifically as things changed, but some degree of defensiveness makes good sense to me and probably didn't make him look so good.

And another endorsement of the life show circa Heritage and Watershed. That's been long enough though that I'm way out of the loop on how they sound live now.

A while ago, someone posted a slam/brutal death metal video where the band had "realistic" lyrics, ie, snort, bleargh, beeeeee. I remember it started with a light intro with lyrics that were nonsense that Lewis Carroll might have written. "I am the gibberjamberjamb" or something like that.

Anyone remember this vid and/or band?

There are some great moments on it though. Love brass wherever it appears. But nothing will ever top Pelagial for me.

Dallas Beltway remains the quintessential Chat Pile track for me, probably because I hate Dallas so much. But God’s Country is incredible front to back, especially having lived in Oklahoma and having family who worked in slaughterhouses.

E on sludge, the latest Yakuza came out today and I'd Call it at least sludge adjacent. Seems a little less so than their others. But Trans mutation is also good and definitely more sludgy.

I think my review of Holocene is "I wish there was more like the latter third of Atlantic, instead most of it is like the middle third of Atlantic".

There are cool ideas but they spend too many songs meandering without building suspense or going anywhere.

Honestly one of their weaker albums that I won't return to too often, except perhaps to certain songs (Preborial especially, but Subboreal is also good)

e: Re-reading, this sounds harsher than intended. It's an okay album. I am not setting my The Ocean collection on fire over it. But it's one of their weakest albums to date.

I've got a pretty high tolerance for silly metal vocals--I loving love me some King Diamond--but I absolutely can't get over how much the high screams in Cattle Decapitation sound like Donald Duck.

Mods?

I can’t believe I’m saying this but the new Acacia Strain record—one of two they put out—that features Ethan McCarthy of Primitive Man is really good. Takes me back to all the lovely shows I used to get dragged to by my buddies in high school. Except somehow pretty okay. Really wouldn’t have checked it out at all if he weren’t involved, but it’s good poo poo.

I agree with this basically. there's a lot of cool, chiller stuff but it kind of just meanders and never leads to anything or goes anywhere except for a couple brief moments.

Got out to a show last night and caught UADA/Possessed, which was an interesting little duo. UADA are loving great live, and I did not know the lead singer for Possessed has been in a wheelchair since '89. Crazy poo poo. Fun show.

They're coming here this weekend (as is Moonspell) and I'd had both shows as definite must gos. But then I went to the venue they're performing at for the first time earlier this week to see Harakiri for the Sky, Ghost Bath, and Unreqvited and the venue was an absolute poo poo hole in a bad way with the worst acoustics and sound mixing i've ever born witness to. I'm just going to save my money instead of going and having a lovely time because the only audible thing is the god drat drums. This place is now hoovering up like 80% of the metal shows coming to the city and it's a really depressing future to think about.

Sleep Token have released their new album Take Me Back To Eden yesterday. This is probably my album of the year.

Track listing:
01. CHOKEHOLD
02. THE SUMMONING
03. GRANITE
04. AQUA REGIA
05. VORE
06. ASCENSIONISM
07. ARE YOU REALLY OKAY?
08. THE APPARITION
09. DYWTYLM
10. RAIN
11. TAKE ME BACK TO EDEN
12. EUCLID

It's hard to put one label on it, but "Metal" is certainly one of them. (But maybe Pop and R&B as well)

Just compare Vore

About half the tracks were released as singles in the past half year, but they saved a few banger.
