Autisanal Cheese posted:absolute classic He started doing the character back in '73 when Sacha Baron Cohen was only 2 years old Apparently it was a parody of some late night talk show presenter called Tommy Leonetti who had a show in Australia in 1969-70 which wasn't great. Fun fact: in that video I posted where he interviews Sally Struthers and she can't stop laughing he tells her all about the Australian version of the Emmy Awards which are called The Logies. It was a running gag in his show that he was desperate to win the Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television and he used to run a regular segment where he went over the show's TV ratings and harangued the audience for not trying hard enough to make him more popular. That gag was ruined in 1976 when he actually did win the Gold Logie and it was the only time it was ever awarded in a character's name and not the performer's real name. The made Lee fuckin' Marvin read out his name and hand him the award live on national TV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbvWhCHa_IU

It is heartening to think that such a subversive, ironic meta-comedy became one of the most popular things ever in this stupid country. And we're still talking about him 50 years later. (just don't mention his Stevie Wonder joke, that did NOT age well)

They also wrapped the expenses of a few decades worth of failed adaptations of the property into its budget, so it was kind of impossible for it to ever actually make money. I mean it was also loving garbage and calling "John Carter" was an incredibly stupid marketing decision.

That film was supposed to come out in 2006 and got delayed so long that the inevitable mockbuster ripoff from The Asylum got released way before the real movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC83KX3IQfs The wikipedia page for the big budget John Carter movie has a very large segment on the film's marketing which goes into a lot of detail about how the film's promotion was botched. There's always a huge amount of dumb bullshit that goes on behind the scenes but they really went overboard on this turkey Poor Willem Dafoe performed his Thark character in a stop motion suit (with a multi-camera rig strapped to his head to capture his facial expressions) on location speaking an invented alien language on stilts https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lDdy_h-s_w&t=166s Such a massive commitment for a role in a terrible, terrible film

And supposedly there's been a Doc Savage movie starring him in development hell forever.

I remember the 90s Phantom movie as being good cheesy fun, but I'm pretty sure the only reason it broke 8 figures at the box office was that it came out at a time when superhero movies were few and far between (and also generally dire.)

For a franchise that’s all about a mantle being passed across generations, The Phantom stories very rarely get into that. I think it’s been the same guy in the newspaper strip since the Lee Falk days.

I'm listening to two have a screaming fight in the neighbours garden as we speak.

if you live in Canada (and Minnesota) and near a lake or even a large enough pond, you've likely heard loon calls your entire life. Watching that video, I don't think I noticed the wail in some of the examples given but now I fear it will stick out like whenever you hear a Wilhelm scream (or those annoying canned applause sfx)

Loons yes. But loving Geese honking is more common. It is the harbinger of danger. More than once I have had to protect the neighbour's kids from the cobra chickens that descend on our complex pool when they return in the spring. While they are Canada Geese, they are not our stereotype of friendly kind and polite. They are a vicious, colonizing force who take and claim land through violence and aggression. So you know, the name is loving accurate.

Loons are angry, stabby, and dramatic. They strand here a fair bit and we have to move them back to the water sometimes, and they’re always beyond pissed about it and screaming bloody murder the entire time.
