The Cutting Cable thread used to rule because there were great deals to be had everywhere. I still have a free Apple TV for signing up for DirectTV Now during the initial release, which sucked rear end, for $35/month with $5 HBO. Now the business people have hosed it all up and every streaming service sucks poo poo, the entire universe is in a gradual decline because of the law of entropy, including streaming services.

syntaxfunction posted:You really don't want consolidation, that's called a monopoly. As it is there's about 7 big services and a bunch of more niche ones, or local offshoots of the big ones. If you define the "product" as the individual shows or movies then it might be argued that what we have now is several retailers acting as their own monopolies... Whatever.... they all suck.

The poo poo thing is Netflix was so great for a while. But of course massively profitable businesses can't let a new niche happen without shutting it up to make another buck. Capitalism is so great.

Lmao Netflix trying to scold people for sharing accounts; so two people who live apart from another sharing an account is less bandwidth-intense than 3 people who live in the same house, or are you just trying to price-gouge without having to raise prices?

Other languages exist and I realize it but it also feels like sometimes they're just there to gently caress with people who pirate/aren't paying much attention to the show. I mean I realize that's probably not the case and it's just an easy quick way to give a character a nationality but I don't care.

I only have Netflix through my moms account in the states, as does my sister, and we’re the only two that use it. I can acquire anything I need and finally tune up my Plex server. Between this and the WGA strike, fuuuuuuuuuck streaming companies. Also, is there a thread for the WGA strike? Hopefully, SAG gets on board

BigSexy posted:Guarantee if pretty much anyone itt complaining had a business like this they wouldn’t allow people to share That would be my initial knee jerk reaction. But then I’d remember I told people they could share back when I wanted everyone to cancel their cable packages. I’d wonder how many people might cancel as I have lots of competition including their online shopping discount club, streaming services bundled with the cable packages they used to have, streaming packages bundled with their phone plans, and all the piracy people got up to before I made streaming easy. Also piracy has taken a lot of notes from popular streaming platforms since 2010 and has gotten really good. Not something I’d want people to discover. There’s still a lot of room for improvement in this space that could cause real headaches for the entire industry and I haven’t heard anything about how they plan on handling these risks if they materialize. For a few hundred thousand dollars you could probably fund development that hits the industry for billions every year so I’d work hard to keep that money from finding its way into those hands. But that’s me and nobody listens to me.
