The chatbot, named Tessa, is described as a “wellness chatbot” and has been in operation since February 2022. The Helpline program will end starting June 1, and Tessa will become the main support system available through NEDA. Helpline volunteers were also asked to step down from their one-on-one support roles and serve as “testers” for the chatbot. According to NPR, which obtained a recording of the call where NEDA fired helpline staff and announced a transition to the chatbot, Tessa was created by a team at Washington University’s medical school and spearheaded by Dr. Ellen Fitzsimmons-Craft. The chatbot was trained to specifically address body image issues using therapeutic methods and only has a limited number of responses.

That's a nice trick. Give the "wellness chatbot" a female sounding name. That way if anyone goes "Tessa is a bitch" you can whack them with the auto banhammer for mysogeny or whatever and you're free and clear.

Title: Senior Associate of Resources, Chatbot

NEDA is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to support the Mission department in expanding a chatbot program to efficiently deliver clear information to individuals and loved ones affected by eating disorders 24 hours a day. This role will focus on uniting the most powerful elements of the NEDA website- the Eating Disorder Screening Tool, the Treatment Resource Map, prevention programming, and our online resources- into a powerful user experience. This role requires strong communication skills and judgment, knowledge of computer operations and artificial intelligence, a self-starting attitude, and collaboration.

The economy is bifurcating. The important 10% of Americans will have an actual therapist or psychiatrist, everyone else gets a computer program that tells them to gently caress off.

There's a push in the medical industry to normalize urgent care for routine medical care for the bottom mass of the economy instead of PCPs. So you'll basically go to a strip mall doctor when something is wrong with you and never have regular visits, a medical history, etc. the biggest part of staying healthy is routine preventative care and screening.

yeah I posted it yesterday when I heard about it. If you read the article, it's 100% a union busting strategy that's going to result in death. The staff at neda had just filed for union recognition like 5 days before the owner gets everyone on a zoom call and says the AI has your job now. It's not going to work at all, the people who programmed the bot say it's not functional. Getting brushed off by a fuckin chatbot when you're trying to talk to a human is annoying in a customer service situation but basically manslaughter when you're operating a crisis hotline. It's mad cruel

People thought this movie, where the rich keep the poor from having access to lifesaving medical care because they want it for themselves and don't want any wait, was too obvious.

Still wish we got the villain in a robot tiger body ending tho

The biggest point I thought was that they had magical healing beds which appear to run on basic electricity, so lifesaving medical care was almost free, but the rich withheld it anyway. No real economic benefit. Just completely "You don't deserve to live."

And it's really close to reality...

I love how "preachy," almost always meaning clearly articulated class antagonism, is Bad Art because the most influential critics occupy their positions thanks to social hierarchy, and not artistic and human insight
