Pants Donkey posted:Rall pretended to be Gen X for decades, but even he couldn’t deny his boomer nature. Rall cartoons have a real "How do you do, fellow kids?" energy, even the ones from when he was actually young. The man is and always has been a knee jerk reactionary who expresses hostility towards women and the LGBTQ community and suspicion at anything remotely novel. At the same time he has a huge axe to grind against society since his childhood was lovely and his adult career has not given him the wealth, accolades, and success he clearly thinks he deserves. The end result, a bitter old man grumbling about kids these days with their genders and their feminism while impotently insisting he is the flagbearer of counterculture. Reminds me of the 'driver only trains' debacle, where government ministers kept saying "no but surely there's someone on board to help disabled passengers on and off the train?" "no, the driver only trains are driver only, that's why we're against them" "but the driver can help?" "no, the driver has to remain at the controls at all times" "and there's nobody else who can help?" "no, the driver only trains are driver only, that's why we're against them" "but that can't be true, because that would be terrible if it were true" "it is true, and it is terrible, that's why we're against driver only trains" ad nauseam.

Pope: Ben Roberts-Smith loses defamation case, with judge finding former SAS soldier committed war crimes. Ben Roberts-Smith is Australia's highest decorated living soldier and he was suing newspapers for reporting on war crimes he committed in Afghanistan. Defamation cases are a lot easier in Australia than the US and the newspapers were arguing a truth defence, and the judge has come back with a verdict that is basically "the papers were right, you are a war criminal". "Doing a shoey" is to have a celebratory drink from a shoe; one of Roberts-Smith's war crimes was murdering a disabled man and taking his prosthetic leg as a trophy that his unit would drink out of. There's the fact that djinn may grant wishes, but they'll also try to do it in the most "make you regret asking" way they can. But that's really giving him too much credit. Should've gone with the monkey's paw if you're wanting to really drive home the "wishes, but bad" angle.
