Denying us another opportunity to grill Edgeworth on what the hell happened that night.  Sound: Gallery  Sound: Gavel Music: Trial   The defense is ready, Your Honor. ... ... Sound: Light Bulb  (Who is the judge here, anyway!?) Mr. von Karma, your opening statement. ... ... Sound: Light Bulb   Not so fast, Judge! Just peak rear end in a top hat right there. R-right, of course. A prediction!Music: Silence  Sound: Fwa-Shing 2  I was wrong, there's peak rear end in a top hat.  Sound: Gallery  Sound: Gavel x 3 Music: Trial  Order... order! Sound: Whack Bah! Must you question everything! I'll call my witness now! R-right...  (It's that mysterious boat shop owner.)  Oh this'll go great. Witness... state your profession. Sound: Gavel  Mmph... zzzz... ... Sound: Fwa-Shing 2  ... And I, er, also rent boats.Did Karma hypnotize this guy to respond to finger snaps?  Er... ayup, yup I was. Please testify. (Wait a second...) I get the feeling the game is going to make us earn this guy's name, and the dialogue for slacking off is usually more fun. (On second thought, I guess it doesn't really matter.) Sound: Light Bulb  What if that old man had something to do with the DL-6 Incident? Oh, what are the odds of that mattering? There is nothing to question in my witness's testimony! Ergo, no need for cross-examination! It's been three minutes and ten seconds in my recording. I must be slow at advancing the dialogue. Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Music: Trial Judge! Your verdict, now! Er... yes... Nah, we're good. (He's right. That testimony sounded pretty solid.) (Maybe I should hold back.) Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato As usual I'll start with the "end of testimony" dialogue. (If I know von Karma, he spent time preparing his witness.) (Whew... it's tough being a lawyer.)Right, there are a couple of things to poke at here, so let's start with pressing. It was the night of the 24th, just after midnight, ayup. "Just after midnight," you say? Ayup, just around then. Are you sure? Pretty sure, ayup. Plus, the blank photo we got from Lotta places the first gunshot at 11:50pm, just before midnight. Maybe that's close enough? I'm surprised you seem so sure about it today. ... Isn't that right!?Sound: Gavel Zzzz... D-don't glare at me like that...! You see? Continue! I was in the restaurant... where I er... rent boats, as usual. Is there anyone who can verify that? ... Well, I guess Polly could. Sound: Desk Slam  Sound: Whack Mr. Wright... exactly what's not good enough? Ah, uh, Your Honor, this "Polly" is a parrot.Sound: Stab A... parrot?Sound: Realization  Keith...?Sound: Realization  Karma is eager to hurry this along before his witness reveals just how clueless he really is. Witness.. please continue. Then I heard a "bang!" Ayup. And where did the "bang" seem to come from?Sound: Gavel From the lake, I figure.Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Are you certain? A-ayup. Good. Continue!That doesn't sound very certain. When I looked out the window, I saw a boat just a' floating on the lake. Was there someone in the boat! But I figure there was two men out there, ayup. But you couldn't see them clearly! Ayup... at the time, that is. Sound: Realization That doesn't sound good for us. Then I heard another "bang." So you heard two gunshots total? Ayup. Something isn't adding up here. Lotta's camera showed an empty lake for the first picture, which assumedly is for the first shot they both heard. But this guy says he looked out and saw a boat on the lake. Of course, there were 25 minutes between the two photos, so I guess a lot could have happened in that time. Just about then the boat comes back to shore, and a man walks by my window. "By your window"?  And, could you see the man's face?  ...Music: Silence Tsk, tsk, tsk...Sound: Realization (I have a bad feeling about this...)Yeah, here comes the trap. Music: Questioning - Moderato  Two men leave on a boat. Only one man comes back, muttering about how the other one is dead. Not a great look for Edgeworth. But we have a new line... A-are you sure!?Sound: Whack Music: Silence ... (Uh oh!)Sound: Desk Slam D-Dad!Sound: Whack Sound: Gavel  Dead certain, Keith!Sound: Objection  Sound: Drama Pound Music: Telling the Truth  Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel x 3  Music: Silence  Sound: Objection Sound: Damage 2 Sound: Damage 1 Having completed sinking our case, the old caretaker collapses.  ...Music: Telling the Truth  Well I can't really argue that. We have some minor quibbles on the timing of what he saw when, but it's hard to refute a direct statement of our client being the one walking away from a shooting. And indeed, none of our evidence would have helped on any of those lines of testimony. (von Karma...) Tsk, tsk, tsk... Everyone in the courtroom is glaring at us! I can't imagine doing nothing is going to help us here, and the instant game-overs from the end of the last day of trial has me nervous. Better object now before this situation gets any worse for us. Sound: Desk Slam Your Honor! Oh, right, that little detail. Mr. Wright. Are you referring to the fingerprints from Edgeworth's right hand found on the gun,  You know drat well I am. Apparently Karma took the day off to come up with a way to wave away this evidence. Exactly! That is easily explainable! And then, what, picked up the gun again anyway, but with the other hand? I know criminals are dumb but that has to be the least plausible theory of the crime I've ever seen. I don't know what to do anymore. Please... We definitely could use some more ghostly inspiration. We need your help... Nick needs you... Tsk tsk tsk...Sound: Realization Three minutes was perhaps too high an expectation. Karma is enjoying himself way too much here. Sound: Gavel   I toyed with the idea of making an empty icon here (there actually is an empty sprite in the sheet) but decided it would just be confusing. This court sees no reason to further prolong the trial. Wait this looks a lot like the game-over sequence. This case is extremely clear. I see no room for mis-interpretation of the facts. (W-what!? No!)Sound: Guilty Hmph.  Sound: Guilty x 6 Well poo poo, we got railroaded. Did I miss something? The accused will surrender to the court immediately, That is all. I've played this game several times and I still can't tell if Manfred is supposed to secretly be Dracula or that's just a fashion statement. Fashion statement, the prosecutor in Great Ace Attorney wears a similar style as a deliberate callback to Manfred. While obviously GAA came out later than AA1, I think you could make an argument Von Karma is deliberately copying the Victorian prosecutor that was part of the inspiration for On the other hand my nickname for that prosecutor is Von Dracula, so I can't exclude porqué nos los dos.

von Karma clearly enjoys the Victorian flair, and Edgeworth probably inherited his more subdued but still hella posh style from him, but he definitively does not have any relation to the character you're thinking of, though I think this isn't the thread to be alluding to future entries.

Finally got to read the latest part of this LP. I've been doing some unrelated other activities. [calms down] Karma is clearly on the verge of going crazy here. Phoenix could exploit that, but he's not that kind of attorney. Probably a good thing. This latest witness is, just, ugh. A better attorney than Phoenix could easily destroy him. Bring in a medical doctor to prove the witness's dementia and whether or not it is like Karma says. Then file a motion to get the testimony thrown out for lack of reliability. Boom, good-bye, witness. You are really risking your case here, Karma. Banking on your reputation and your opponent's inexperience. You are going to crash and burn, I am sure. I am looking forward to seeing how that happens. As for Larry, good to see him again. I hope he will be useful to Phoenix this time. Nuff Said.

Dammit Larry stop breaking out new sprites on me in your eightieth scene of the game.  Sound: Objection This sprite, however, is a classic. Remembered what? The gunshot!Sound: Zooma I heard it too!Sound: Damage 2  Sound: Gallery If it seems like I'm not taking Larry seriously, it's because I'm not. Because... he's Larry. See everything in yesterday's investigation sequence for reference. Sound: Gavel O-order!Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 What is the meaning of this!?Sound: Whack  The game has me agreeing with Karma here. Anyway, on with the cross. That night, I was out in a boat on the lake. ... Something wrong, Mr. Wright? Sounds like a proper Larry Butz testimony then. Ah... Um, well, okay. First of all, what time was it? By that time everyone had gone home for the night. And why were you out on a boat at such a late hour...? I was looking for something, and I, er, found it. "Looking for something"...? Er, yeah. What the witness was searching for is irrelevant! That explanation is probably better than the real story. Larry's credibility is low enough as it is. (That's... surprisingly close to the truth, in a sense.) This is all irrelevant! Let's get it over with. So I quietly slipped the boat back in at the rental shop dock. Around what time was that? Uh... Well, let's see... I guess it was around 12:00. Yeah. You're not sure? Sound: Whack I'm not some sort of human sundial, okay!?Sound: Damage 2 (People use watches these days, Larry...)Around 12:00 is still pretty vague. Did he hear the first shot at 11:50, and then go home before hearing the second one at 12:15? (Assuming the timestamps on Lotta's photos are even accurate...) Then, just as I was thinking about going home, I heard this "bang"! Where did the sound come from? I looked around, y'know. Did you look at the lake? Yeah, I looked. I looked out over the lake, but I didn't see a boat.Sound: Desk Slam Wasn't there a boat on the lake!? Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel Order! Order! Well? Mr. Butz!Sound: Whack Whoa, whoa. I mean, it was real foggy that night. Larry you are the worst. There goes one of our possible contradictions.  Sound: Whoops Hmph! So after I heard that single gunshot I went home. In contrast, being a defense attorney requires you to be a defense attorney, a detective, possibly have a friend on the police force that's willing to let you inspect crime scenes, and even then you're still oblivious as to a fair amount of information regarding the incident until you're in the middle of the trial. And even THEN, the prosecution pulls out new evidence at the last second for dramatic effect.

Real life is like that for attorneys too, to some degree. I will say no more yet, still need to catch up on posts. [after reading] This case keeps getting more interesting and intense. Glad Karma is having to deal with an “imperfect trial” for once. Phoenix has already had several such trials and will have more.  I look forward to enjoying the results further. It's a contradiction, though I'm not sure how it really helps us. (Also the gun was fired three times, but that's not useable here.) Music: Silence W-wait a sec, Larry! Wh-what!? That's what I said! Sound: Weak Gunshot  Music: Objection! They both heard two gunshots that night! Huh?Sound: Stab Sound: Desk Slam Were you even listening!? I mean, it's not like Larry should change his story just because someone else said something different. Yo, Nick, please!Sound: Objection Sound: Super Shock Huh? we like to rag on Larry but I somehow doubt anyone in this courtroom actually was with their loved ones on Christmas Nick and Maya were having a regular office day, and the witnesses and Edgeworth were all doing whatever they were doing at Gourd Lake. The Judge, okay, he's probably a beloved grandfather. No idea what to make of von Karma; he either spends his off-time watching crime dramas and scoffing about how long it takes the cops to railroad the obvious culprit, or he's a big cuddly teddy bear who makes the judge look curmudgeonly, and a family man, when the cufflinks come off. Definitely one of those extremes.

Part 103: Episode 4, Day 3, Trial: Make Your Shots Count Bit of a spread here, but there is a clear contradiction between "almost Christmas" and "after midnight" with two of these options. I think some people were confused about the photos, despite my helpful presentation of the name and description of each piece of evidence in the court record. The "Lake Photo" is the one taken after midnight, that contradicts Larry's statement. The "Second Lake Photo" is the one taken before midnight, that actually supports Larry's statement.  You know what, I'll just assume all the photo votes were meant for the "Lake Photo" above and make it the winner. Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam  Huh? What's with the face? You look scary, dude.Sound: Light Bulb  Is something the matter, Mr. Wright? Your Honor! Did you hear what the witness just said? Indeed... And...? "Almost Christmas" means it wasn't Christmas! Sound: Weak Gunshot  Sound: Dump  Here's the weakest part of our theory. Lotta's enlarged photo showed the shooter on the right. This scene - which we saw in the prologue, and is I guess re-enacted here - shows the man on the left falling into the water. But for our theory to work, the shooter has to be the man falling into the water (leaving Edgeworth behind). So I'm assuming some kind of perspective trick here.  Technically true, but irrelevant, if the shooting didn't actually take place on that boat. Well?Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 The guilty party has to be the other man on that boat! I admit, it is hard to imagine any other possibility. Yes... ... What do you mean by that, Mr. Wright? The timestamp on the photo says 00:15. But Larry heard a gunshot 25 minutes before that!Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence  (That's the only way that Edgeworth could be innocent!) ... ...
