Part 100: Episode 4, Day 3, Trial: Guilt Trap 2.0

Music: Silence

Looks like it's straight to the courtroom today. Denying us another opportunity to grill Edgeworth on what the hell happened that night.

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

Music: Trial

The defense is ready, Your Honor.

...

...

Sound: Light Bulb

(Who is the judge here, anyway!?)

Mr. von Karma, your opening statement.

...

...

Sound: Light Bulb

Not so fast, Judge!

Just peak rear end in a top hat right there.

R-right, of course.

A prediction!

Music: Silence

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

I was wrong, there's peak rear end in a top hat.

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel x 3

Music: Trial

Order... order!

Sound: Whack

Bah! Must you question everything!

I'll call my witness now!

R-right...

(It's that mysterious boat shop owner.)

Oh this'll go great.

Witness... state your profession.

Sound: Gavel

Mmph... zzzz...

...

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

...

And I, er, also rent boats.

Did Karma hypnotize this guy to respond to finger snaps?

Er... ayup, yup I was.

Please testify.

(Wait a second...)

I get the feeling the game is going to make us earn this guy's name, and the dialogue for slacking off is usually more fun.

(On second thought, I guess it doesn't really matter.)

Sound: Light Bulb

What if that old man had something to do with the DL-6 Incident?

Oh, what are the odds of that mattering?

(Hmm, she has a point.)

quote:

If we raise an objection initially, we just skip the previous lines and move on straight with the objection below.

Wait a minute!

Because I did not ask him, Mr. Wright! Bah!

I have predicted this trial will end in three minutes!

Stop asking trivial questions and cooperate!

(Yeah, right!)
Sound: Whoops

Sound: Gavel

The witness will state his name.

Sound: Gavel

Zzzz...

...

Mmph! Well, er...

What do you mean?

My, er, memory...

Your Honor...

Ergo, he cannot recall his own name.

Edgeworth even gets his "ergo" from this guy.

He can testify.

Very well.

Music: Silence

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

It was the night of the 24th, just after midnight, ayup.

Then I heard a "bang." Ayup.
Sound: Weak Gunshot

Sound: Weak Gunshot

Not going to identify the man, I see. That must be a trap for later.

Music: Silence

Hmm...

Very well. I'd like to begin the cross-examination...

There is nothing to question in my witness's testimony!

Ergo, no need for cross-examination!

It's been three minutes and ten seconds in my recording. I must be slow at advancing the dialogue.

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Music: Trial

Judge! Your verdict, now!

Er... yes...

Nah, we're good.

(He's right. That testimony sounded pretty solid.)

(Maybe I should hold back.)

Sound: Whack

This is your only chance to turn this trial around! Your last chance!

(O-oh... right.)

quote:

Choosing to cross-examine:

Sound: Desk Slam

What are you saying!? Of course I'll cross-examine the witness!

Hmm...

Very well, you may begin.

And we continue on the same from there.

Music: Silence

Sound: Guilty
Sound: Desk Slam

I... what.

E-excuse me? Mr. von Karma?

Three minutes just passed.

But Karma clearly has an important facial appointment to get to! Or something like that.

You may cross-examine the witness.

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

As usual I'll start with the "end of testimony" dialogue.

(If I know von Karma, he spent time preparing his witness.)

(Whew... it's tough being a lawyer.)

Right, there are a couple of things to poke at here, so let's start with pressing.

It was the night of the 24th, just after midnight, ayup.

"Just after midnight," you say?

Ayup, just around then.

Are you sure?

Pretty sure, ayup.

Plus, the blank photo we got from Lotta places the first gunshot at 11:50pm, just before midnight. Maybe that's close enough?

I'm surprised you seem so sure about it today.

...

Isn't that right!?

Sound: Gavel

Zzzz...

D-don't glare at me like that...!

You see? Continue!

I was in the restaurant... where I er... rent boats, as usual.

Is there anyone who can verify that?

...

Well, I guess Polly could.

Sound: Desk Slam

Sound: Whack

Mr. Wright... exactly what's not good enough?

Ah, uh, Your Honor, this "Polly" is a parrot.
Sound: Stab

A... parrot?
Sound: Realization

Keith...?
Sound: Realization

Karma is eager to hurry this along before his witness reveals just how clueless he really is.

Witness.. please continue.

Then I heard a "bang!" Ayup.

And where did the "bang" seem to come from?

Sound: Gavel

From the lake, I figure.

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Are you certain?

A-ayup.

Good. Continue!

That doesn't sound very certain.

When I looked out the window, I saw a boat just a' floating on the lake.

Was there someone in the boat!

But I figure there was two men out there, ayup.

But you couldn't see them clearly!

Ayup... at the time, that is.

Sound: Realization

That doesn't sound good for us.

Then I heard another "bang."

So you heard two gunshots total?

Ayup.

Something isn't adding up here. Lotta's camera showed an empty lake for the first picture, which assumedly is for the first shot they both heard. But this guy says he looked out and saw a boat on the lake. Of course, there were 25 minutes between the two photos, so I guess a lot could have happened in that time.

Just about then the boat comes back to shore, and a man walks by my window.

"By your window"?

And, could you see the man's face?

...

Music: Silence

Tsk, tsk, tsk...
Sound: Realization

(I have a bad feeling about this...)

Yeah, here comes the trap.

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Two men leave on a boat. Only one man comes back, muttering about how the other one is dead. Not a great look for Edgeworth. But we have a new line...

A-are you sure!?
Sound: Whack

Music: Silence

...

(Uh oh!)

Sound: Desk Slam

D-Dad!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Gavel

Dead certain, Keith!
Sound: Objection

Sound: Drama Pound

Music: Telling the Truth

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel x 3

Music: Silence

Sound: Objection
Sound: Damage 2
Sound: Damage 1

Having completed sinking our case, the old caretaker collapses.

...

Music: Telling the Truth

Well I can't really argue that. We have some minor quibbles on the timing of what he saw when, but it's hard to refute a direct statement of our client being the one walking away from a shooting. And indeed, none of our evidence would have helped on any of those lines of testimony.

(von Karma...)

Tsk, tsk, tsk...

Everyone in the courtroom is glaring at us!

I can't imagine doing nothing is going to help us here, and the instant game-overs from the end of the last day of trial has me nervous. Better object now before this situation gets any worse for us.

Sound: Desk Slam

Your Honor!

Oh, right, that little detail.

Mr. Wright.

Are you referring to the fingerprints from Edgeworth's right hand found on the gun,

You know drat well I am. Apparently Karma took the day off to come up with a way to wave away this evidence.

Exactly!

That is easily explainable!

And then, what, picked up the gun again anyway, but with the other hand? I know criminals are dumb but that has to be the least plausible theory of the crime I've ever seen.

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

You are ignoring the truth of the matter here!

quote:

Objecting didn't really seem to work, so what happens if we just sit back and wait?

(But... how can I raise an objection without any proof?)

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

Judge! There is no room for doubt in the witness's testimony!

I demand that you declare your verdict!

Doesn't really seem any better...

Hmm...

We get another opportunity to object, though we don't have any more to say than last time, really. Still, might as well go down swinging!

Your Honor!

But his word is all we have!

...Yes, that's how witnesses work.

Sound: Desk Slam

If he were telling a lie...

Mr. Wright.

In a court of law, the evidence tells all.

I'm never going to learn to like smug prosecutors lecturing me on evidence while ignoring all the piles of evidence I present to clear my client.

If you say his testimony is a lie, show us proof!

Urk...

quote:

So once again objecting didn't work. Does sitting back help at all?

(I can't see any room to raise an objection...)

(I'd better hold back and see how things develop.)

Nick! We have to do something!

If we stay quiet now, Mr. Edgeworth'll be found guilty for sure!

Doesn't seem like it...

We quickly realize that we're screwed no matter what we do here.

Music: Silence

A... are you sure?

To be honest...

I don't know what to do anymore.

Please...

We definitely could use some more ghostly inspiration.

We need your help... Nick needs you...

Tsk tsk tsk...
Sound: Realization

Three minutes was perhaps too high an expectation.

Karma is enjoying himself way too much here.

Sound: Gavel

I toyed with the idea of making an empty icon here (there actually is an empty sprite in the sheet) but decided it would just be confusing.

This court sees no reason to further prolong the trial.

Wait this looks a lot like the game-over sequence.

This case is extremely clear. I see no room for mis-interpretation of the facts.

(W-what!? No!)
Sound: Guilty

Hmph.

Sound: Guilty x 6

Well poo poo, we got railroaded. Did I miss something?

The accused will surrender to the court immediately,

That is all. This court is adjourned!

Sound: Gavel

Sound: Objection

Sound: Shock 2 x 4

Wait, so it wasn't Mia. Then who saved us?

Wh-who was that just now?

Fashion statement, the prosecutor in Great Ace Attorney wears a similar style as a deliberate callback to Manfred. While obviously GAA came out later than AA1, I think you could make an argument Von Karma is deliberately copying the Victorian prosecutor that was part of the inspiration for Japan Japanifornia's judicial reform back in the day. As the localisation for this game made Von Karma European, he could even be a grandnephew.
On the other hand my nickname for that prosecutor is Von Dracula, so I can't exclude porqué nos los dos.

von Karma clearly enjoys the Victorian flair, and Edgeworth probably inherited his more subdued but still hella posh style from him, but he definitively does not have any relation to the character you're thinking of, though I think this isn't the thread to be alluding to future entries.

Finally got to read the latest part of this LP. I've been doing some unrelated other activities.

[calms down]

Karma is clearly on the verge of going crazy here. Phoenix could exploit that, but he's not that kind of attorney. Probably a good thing.

This latest witness is, just, ugh. A better attorney than Phoenix could easily destroy him. Bring in a medical doctor to prove the witness's dementia and whether or not it is like Karma says. Then file a motion to get the testimony thrown out for lack of reliability. Boom, good-bye, witness. You are really risking your case here, Karma. Banking on your reputation and your opponent's inexperience. You are going to crash and burn, I am sure. I am looking forward to seeing how that happens.

As for Larry, good to see him again. I hope he will be useful to Phoenix this time.

Part 101: Episode 4, Day 3, Trial: Wishy-Washy Testimony

Wh-what are you doing here!?

My sentiments exactly.

Sound: Desk Slam

I... I was...

I was there, in the park, the night of the murder!
Sound: Whack

It was a veritable party in the park on Christmas Eve apparently.

Dammit Larry stop breaking out new sprites on me in your eightieth scene of the game.

Sound: Objection

This sprite, however, is a classic.

Remembered what?

The gunshot!
Sound: Zooma

I heard it too!
Sound: Damage 2

Sound: Gallery

If it seems like I'm not taking Larry seriously, it's because I'm not. Because... he's Larry. See everything in yesterday's investigation sequence for reference.

Sound: Gavel

O-order!

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

What is the meaning of this!?
Sound: Whack

The game has me agreeing with Karma here. This situation is highly irregular. Still I guess we need something dramatic to turn things around.

One moment, Mr. von Karma.

Yeah, I did! A gunshot! That night!
Sound: Whack

I was sitting here in the audience, listening to the testimony...

Why was Larry even here? Was he planning to jump in the whole time? Just here to support his buddies after chatting about the case yesterday?

A-anyhow, I can't just sit here and let you call Edgey a murderer!

It's... It's just not right!
Sound: Zooma
Sound: Shock 2

I'll testify! Lemme testify!
Sound: Whack

Sound: Gallery

This sequence might make a little more sense if Larry hadn't literally waited for the verdict to be read before jumping in, but I guess it was more dramatic that way.

Sound: Gavel x 3

Order! Order!

I'm not quite sure how to proceed...

Sound: Whack

I almost feel bad for Karma here. Not only is he about to get his verdict yanked out from under him, but he's going to have to question Larry.

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

The trial is over!

Nick!
Sound: Whack

This game really does a great job making every trial interaction seem like the case is dangling by the slimmest of threads.

Sound: Gavel

That gavel is getting a workout already today.

Court is adjourned!

We have once again paired Defendant Lobby No. 2 with Courtroom No. 3 for this trial day (same as the previous trial day). I will find a pattern here somewhere.

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

Whew...

That was too close.
Sound: Whoops

Hmph.

I've seen worse.

(Yeah right, Edgeworth. You're sweating bullets!)

I just wonder what Larry plans to say in there.

Yes...

Oh right.

Did he find the air tank and then toss it in the bushes by the boat rental shop? Larry you litterbug.

Yeah.

...

Hey, Edgeworth.

...

Sound: Light Bulb

Yeah, a lot of things.

You seem out of it. What's wrong?

He was just declared guilty of murder a minute ago is all.

Hmm?

What's that?

Why are your fingerprints on the murder weapon?

Oh.

Sound: Dump

I couldn't understand what had happened. I couldn't think straight.

Then I saw the pistol lying on the floor of the boat in front of me.

Thank you, Maya, for finally getting a straight answer out of Edgeworth.

I see...

Wright...

Music: Silence

Yeah?

Our chance?
Sound: Realization

Perfect trials...?

Perfectly prepared witnesses, perfectly complete evidence.

That's the secret to his success.

Seems like every other defense attorney out there is doing a pretty poo poo job then.

He has to let someone he hasn't even talked to testify before the court!

And that someone... is Larry!

What are you getting at?

Edgeworth clearly knows Larry well.

That's right, Nick!
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture

Hey, it was fifteen minutes! Fifteen! (Everything's on Larry now...)

I remain unsure how Larry is going to help us, but I guess stalling is all we have right now. I'm not convinced Larry actually saw or heard anything, so I have to wonder how crossing him will even benefit us. Maybe Karma will slip up and say something he shouldn't? Or maybe Larry did see some key detail that he doesn't even realize is useful information?

Music: Silence

Point of order - after subtracting the five-minute recess, the previous court sequence actually took thirty minutes, not fifteen.

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

Music: Trial

Court is now back in session.

Witness...

on the night of December 24th.

Right... leave it to me!

(Please, Larry, don't mess this one up!!!)

Larry being our last chance makes this case feel even more hopeless than normal.

...

(von Karma didn't even have time to prep his witness.)

Music: Silence

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

That night, I was out in a boat on the lake.

So I quietly slipped the boat back in at the rental shop dock.

Sound: Weak Gunshot

I looked out over the lake, but I didn't see a boat.

Music: Silence

It almost feels like Karma should be the one doing the crossing here. But we've got two lines here that contradict the old caretaker already: 1) Larry only heard one gunshot, and 2) At the time of that gunshot, there was no boat on the lake.

Hmm...

In any case, Mr. Wright, you may begin your cross-examination.

Yes, Your Honor...

What's wrong, Nick?

I'm a little scared.

Hmm...

True enough, I suppose.

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

Well, Nick?

Hmm...

I guess I should just start working on the contradictions.

Sorry...

It would actually be kind of nice to get through the finale without Mia's help, and then she just comes out to help celebrate afterward. Maybe she'll just pop in for the final investigation sequence. Anyway, on with the cross.

That night, I was out in a boat on the lake.

...

Something wrong, Mr. Wright?

Sounds like a proper Larry Butz testimony then.

Ah...

Um, well, okay. First of all, what time was it?

By that time everyone had gone home for the night.

And why were you out on a boat at such a late hour...?

I was looking for something, and I, er, found it.

"Looking for something"...?

Er, yeah.

What the witness was searching for is irrelevant!

That explanation is probably better than the real story. Larry's credibility is low enough as it is.

(That's... surprisingly close to the truth, in a sense.)

This is all irrelevant! Let's get it over with.

So I quietly slipped the boat back in at the rental shop dock.

Around what time was that?

Uh... Well, let's see...

I guess it was around 12:00. Yeah.

You're not sure?

Sound: Whack

I'm not some sort of human sundial, okay!?
Sound: Damage 2

(People use watches these days, Larry...)

Around 12:00 is still pretty vague. Did he hear the first shot at 11:50, and then go home before hearing the second one at 12:15? (Assuming the timestamps on Lotta's photos are even accurate...)

Then, just as I was thinking about going home, I heard this "bang"!

Where did the sound come from?

I looked around, y'know.

Did you look at the lake?

Yeah, I looked.

I looked out over the lake, but I didn't see a boat.

Sound: Desk Slam

Wasn't there a boat on the lake!?

Sound: Gallery

Sound: Gavel

Order! Order!

Well? Mr. Butz!
Sound: Whack

Whoa, whoa.

I mean, it was real foggy that night.

Larry you are the worst. There goes one of our possible contradictions.

Sound: Whoops

Hmph!

So after I heard that single gunshot I went home.

Sound: Weak Gunshot

Yeah.

(Huh.)

Well, it's time for a break, but I won't bother asking for a vote here. Hopefully this choice is as obvious to you as it is to me, but feel free to discuss.

I mean, to be fair, consider the following: in Ace Attorney land, being a prosecutor is a single job. In contrast, being a defense attorney requires you to be a defense attorney, a detective, possibly have a friend on the police force that's willing to let you inspect crime scenes, and even then you're still oblivious as to a fair amount of information regarding the incident until you're in the middle of the trial. And even THEN, the prosecution pulls out new evidence at the last second for dramatic effect.

Mr. von Karma... your opinion?

I really can't argue with that sentiment, but I guess we have to anyway.

Very well, Mr. Butz.

It's lonely, being alone on Christmas Eve!

I was listening to it real booming loud, like.
Sound: Whack

But I'm sure I heard that gunshot!

Thank you Larry for not providing the one detail that could be useful. I guess we'll have to press for it.

Music: Silence

Yeah, what's the big problem?
Sound: Whack

Sound: Damage 2

(I truly believe Larry has no idea what the problem here is.)

Judge.

Can you believe a word this witness says?

True enough, it is difficult to believe this testimony.

Sound: Desk Slam

Wait, Your Honor!

Excuse me? "Dee-jay"...?
Sound: Realization

An announcer... the guy who says things on the radio.

Anyway!

What this means is, when he heard the sound, no music was playing!

Phoenix drops the logic bomb all on his own this time.

I'd like to cross-examine the witness, Your Honor!

V-very well, Mr. Wright.

(I can't believe I'm continuing this charade...)

Sound: Testimony 2

Music: Questioning - Moderato

(This is the most ludicrous testimony I've ever heard.)

Here's what I see - the line about hearing what the DJ was saying could establish a specific time for the gunshot. Maybe they can go back and find a recording of the show and line up the timestamps or something?

(I've got to press it until we get to the bottom of what happened!)

It's lonely, being alone on Christmas Eve!

So, you turned on the radio?

Right!
Sound: Light Bulb

I just wanted to hear someone's voice, y'know?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Whack x 2

Apparently his girlfriend wasn't taking his calls?

(I shouldn't have said anything...)

That's why I was listening to an all-requests show on the radio, see?

This has nothing to do with the case, Your Honor!

Objection sustained.

Hey now, the specific program could be important if we need to correlate what the DJ said with what time it was said.

Tell us, Mr. Butz, how loud was your radio set to that night?

I was listening to it real booming loud, like.

Real "booming" loud?

Yeah, y'know.

And you had headphones on?

Yup.

But I'm sure I heard that gunshot!

Can you prove that...?

No... no, of course you can't.

Nah, I can't prove it.

But I remember that moment real clear.

I remember exactly what the DJ was saying when I heard it, too.

What did she say?

Mr. Wright!

Please cease these pointless questions!

Well, it would be nice to establish the timing of one of the gunshots and what Larry heard in relation to Lotta's photos...

Indeed, Mr. von Karma has a point.

Of course we care! It's the only potential useful nugget of information in this garbage testimony!

Sound: Desk Slam

We should care, Your Honor! Of course we should!

Why?

Uh.
Sound: Realization

....Phoenix I'm taking away the kudos I gave you earlier.

Fine, very well.

Mr. Butz, please testify to the court.

Of course, Phoenix's lame line somehow works anyway.

quote:

Backing off doesn't get us anywhere:

(Hmm... right.)

(I didn't really have a deep reason for asking, now that I think about it.)

Understood, Your Honor. I withdraw my question.

Continue your examination of the witness, then.

(This is getting nowhere...)

We're looped back to the "end of testimony" lines and then the beginning of the cross again.

Well there we go. Useful information! The gunshot was just before midnight. ...How does that help us? Let's press on it first.

Are you sure?

Course I am!

She had this real sexy voice...

I see a couple possible options here. Let's run through our evidence real quick.

Attorney's Badge - No one would believe I was a defense attorney if I didn't carry this.

Lotta's Camera - Set to automatically take a picture when a loud noise is detected. Faces the lake.

Robert's Autopsy Report - Time of death: sometime on the 24th or 25th. Shot from approximately one meter away.

Lake Photo - Taken automatically on 12/25 at 12:15 AM.

Second Lake Photo - Shows an empty lake. Taken automatically on 12/24 at 11:50 PM.

Misty Fey's Photo - An old photograph. "DL-6 Incident - Exhibit A" is written on the back.

Gourdy Article - Article about a monster sighted at Gourd Lake.

Overhead Map - Overhead map of Gourd Lake.

Pistol Bullet - Found in the victim's body. The ballistic markings match the murder weapon's barrel.

Pistol - The murder weapon. .22-caliber. Fired 3 times. Bears prints from Edgeworth's right hand.

Lotta's Deposition - I heard two sounds like gunshots just after midnight on 12/25.

Metal Detector - Makes a noise when metallic objects are near. A useful detection device.

Parrot - The erstwhile companion of the boat shop caretaker. Answers to the name "Polly."

DL-6 Case File - File on the DL-6 Incident.

DL-6 Incident Photo - Photograph of the scene of the murder.

Anything stand out there? What should we present?

we like to rag on Larry but I somehow doubt anyone in this courtroom actually was with their loved ones on Christmas

Nick and Maya were having a regular office day, and the witnesses and Edgeworth were all doing whatever they were doing at Gourd Lake. The Judge, okay, he's probably a beloved grandfather.

No idea what to make of von Karma; he either spends his off-time watching crime dramas and scoffing about how long it takes the cops to railroad the obvious culprit, or he's a big cuddly teddy bear who makes the judge look curmudgeonly, and a family man, when the cufflinks come off. Definitely one of those extremes.

Part 103: Episode 4, Day 3, Trial: Make Your Shots Count

Bit of a spread here, but there is a clear contradiction between "almost Christmas" and "after midnight" with two of these options. I think some people were confused about the photos, despite my helpful presentation of the name and description of each piece of evidence in the court record. The "Lake Photo" is the one taken after midnight, that contradicts Larry's statement. The "Second Lake Photo" is the one taken before midnight, that actually supports Larry's statement.

You know what, I'll just assume all the photo votes were meant for the "Lake Photo" above and make it the winner.

As I hinted at earlier, there are actually two items that show an "after midnight" link. Lotta's Deposition explicitly says that she heard two shots after midnight, and it works equally well here. The first part of the objection is the same, and we pick up here right after the "Objection" music kicks in.

That would seem to be the case, yes...

But that contradicts the two testimonies we have heard so far, Your Honor!

Both Ms. Hart and the old man said it was after midnight when they heard the shots!

In other words...

When they heard the gunshots, it was already Christmas!!!

And from here, we continue on the same as with the photo.

However, this witness says he heard a gunshot before midnight...

Ahhh poo poo goddammit this game got me again. One shot before midnight, two shots after midnight, totaling three shots fired by the murder weapon. Larry heard the first one, and Lotta's camera got it as well, with no boat on the lake. He either left or didn't hear the later gunshots. Lotta and the old caretaker didn't hear the first gunshot (either they were both asleep or it was located far enough away they didn't notice?) but both heard the second pair of gunshots, with the boat on the lake at the time. Lotta even said when she gave us the first photo way back at the beginning that there were two copies of it, which at the time I even thought might mean two gunshots, but then the extra photo of the blank lake 25 minutes earlier threw me off.

Your Honor!

Sound: Objection

I picked up on the 25 minute gap, but got really hung up on the two photos being one gunshot each, and it just being really weird that Lotta and the old caretaker didn't seem it worth mentioning that there was so much time in between them. But the prior witnesses really heard two gunshots after midnight, while Larry heard one gunshot before midnight, possibly at a different location in the park entirely (and certainly not out on a boat on the lake). And I'm still betting that first gunshot is the one that really killed our victim.

...I still have no idea what happened on that boat.

Sound: Gavel x 3

Why would this be...?

Don't be fooled, Judge!

Yes?

Karma's witnesses saying something means it's true until we prove it's false. Our witness saying something means it's false until it's proven true. Whatever.

...Okay Maya may have actually done that. But to be fair that sneeze wasn't until after Lotta turned up the sensitivity on the camera.

Sound: Whack

Quiet, Larry, the adults are talking.

Hmm...

Well, Mr. Wright?

There's no turning back now.

Please show the court evidence if you have any.

This choice is easy now, given the setup. The penalty isn't even a threat here.

This gun was fired three times. Once before midnight, and twice after midnight.

The... murder weapon?

Something about this pistol was bothering me, Your Honor.

However, the murder weapon was fired three times.

When, then, was the last shot fired?

I'll ask you again.

Can you prove that the "loud noise" at 11:50 PM was indeed a gunshot?

Please show the court evidence if you have any.

We do get to try again, if we have anything left in our health bar.

quote:

This next piece is a bit of a long one. As you might have guessed, we can actually present the gun first, and the empty lake photo second. A lot of the dialogue is re-used (just in the opposite order), but enough of the connecting pieces are different that I'll just present the entire sequence here. We're starting from Karma's first prompt, asking for evidence of a shot before midnight, and starting with the gun this time.

This is my evidence.

The... murder weapon?
Sound: Realization

Something about this pistol was bothering me, Your Honor.

Both of the witnesses who testified yesterday heard two gunshots.

However, the murder weapon was fired three times.

When, then, was the last shot fired?

Only now have I realized the truth.

Sound: Desk Slam

That third shot was the shot Larry heard just before midnight!
Sound: Objection

Sound: Gavel

Order! Order!

Hmm...

I guess that would make sense out of yesterday's testimonies.

Bah! You waste our time again with your empty statements!

Yes, the pistol was fired three times.

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

But do you have any proof that it was fired before midnight!?

Do you have proof that the witness didn't just "think" he heard something?
Sound: Whack

Indeed...

Well, Mr. Wright?

There's no turning back now.

Do you have evidence that proves there was a gunshot before midnight?

Do you have evidence that proves Mr. Butz wasn't just hearing things?

We're given another evidence prompt here. This time we need to present the empty lake photo, with the timestamp showing it was taken before midnight. The dialogue for a wrong choice here is the same as on the second prompt in the main timeline, and like in that case, there is also a penalty attached to this decision here.

Look at this photograph!

This was taken by our witness yesterday, Ms. Lotta Hart, with her automatic camera.

The timestamp on the photo reads "December 24, 11:50 PM."

Oh yeah?

Hmm?
Sound: Light Bulb

But, there's nothing on the lake in this picture.

Your Honor.

The real issue here is not why nothing is shown in this photograph.

It is why this photograph exists at all!

What do you mean?

Your Honor...

This photograph was taken by an automatic camera.

That camera was set to go off in response to loud noises!
Sound: Realization

Ahah!

Phoenix nods here; he doesn't in the other timeline. :iiam:

Correct!

There was a loud noise on the lake at 11:50 PM.

That is why this photograph was taken!

Looks like Phoenix has had a breakthrough. I've poked at it before, but I think here's where we find out that the first gunshot (that Larry heard) is the one that killed the victim, and it didn't take place on the lake. So the other two were some kind of obfuscation to throw us off, and frame Edgeworth?

What do you mean, Mr. Wright!?
Sound: Whack

Tsk tsk tsk...

So, you've finally realized the truth?

Karma is light-years behind us but still smug as ever.

Wrong, von Karma!

Listen, rookie.

Take a deep breath, and consider the facts.

At the time of the murder, one boat was on that lake.

False. The shooting was before midnight, with no boat on the lake.

Also false. Someone else was on that boat with Edgeworth. Probably the killer, by process of elimination.

Sound: Weak Gunshot

Sound: Dump

Here's the weakest part of our theory. Lotta's enlarged photo showed the shooter on the right. This scene - which we saw in the prologue, and is I guess re-enacted here - shows the man on the left falling into the water. But for our theory to work, the shooter has to be the man falling into the water (leaving Edgeworth behind). So I'm assuming some kind of perspective trick here.

Technically true, but irrelevant, if the shooting didn't actually take place on that boat.

Well?

Sound: Fwa-Shing 2

The guilty party has to be the other man on that boat!

I admit, it is hard to imagine any other possibility.

Yes...

...

What do you mean by that, Mr. Wright?

The timestamp on the photo says 00:15.

But Larry heard a gunshot 25 minutes before that!
