It didn't happen overnight, it took 13 years to get here. Many young people in their 20's probably don't remember things being better. It's like the frog in a pot of water being slowly brought to boil. I would like to think if this happened in a shorter time frame there would be more of an uproar but I'm doubtful. Besides, it was the poor, sick and disabled they came for first, people the vast majority just don't think about. The middle class is being squeezed now, and the upper class who are not the elite are going to be next - but they still vote Tory. Amazes me that they can't see they will be next.

Nah, not at all. It was because they scrapped some sewage regulations after Brexit. But it did kinda happen overnight. They sold off the water companies a long time ago.

If the opposition party was motivated by winning, they could easily run on "We will take away the human poo poo coating our rivers and beaches" and I bet the public would respond to that. I think one of the most important factors in modern anglosphere politics that does not get commented on is how much winning is no longer a personal goal for people in the establishment center parties. Democrats are Republicans ten years ago and Labour is Tories ten years ago. Sure, that's what they believe. But they don't even want to win anymore. A candidate who keeps losing winnable races will keep getting put up, a campaign manager who absolutely eats poo poo will keep getting work on campaigns. As long as they don't piss off the wrong people, they stay in. These parties are nothing more than self-sustaining makework for people in the right social circles.
