You're doubly lucky, because his run with Evelyn Smythe (Maggie Stables) is the best he has and as far as I'm concerned some of the best Who ever. Seriously, start with The Marian Conspiracy and go from there. They're an amazing team and bring out the best in each other. Wonderful stuff

She's one of my favourite companions! Sorry I might have worded it weirdly. I've listen to all of his stuff except for his output from 2008 to 2016.

I think the only reason this has become a discussion at all (I'm not singling you out here, mind; this is a societal problem) is that we view sex work as something less-than, so we want to define anything but street-walking or porn as not being that, but if we all just thought of sex work as just another job a person can have, I kinda' doubt we'd spend so much time defining what is, and more importantly, isn't, sex work.

I've always read Amy as being a straight up stripper for basically this reason. Calling herself a "kissogram" is a tacit denial of her job for the sake of appearances.

Colin is The Definitive Big Finish Doctor as far as I'm concerned. I absolutely adore the BF Sixth Doctor. I'd go so far as to say he's in my top three or four Doctors ever, and he probably edges out Paul McGann even (though it's close)

The fact that he got the chance to have his interpretation bloom is up there along with McGann's 50th anniversary appearance in terms of entirely welcome and unpredictable developments. Love it

Colin Baker is the perfect Doctor for audio because he goes so big with the character that it works especially well in the format.

Confusedslight posted:

The brilliant thing about big finishs large catalogue is that there is still so much 6th doctor content I've yet to hear! There's a good portion from around 2008ish - 2016 of sixth doctorness I haven't listened to at all and I look forward to getting to it!

We're so lucky that he decided to come back to doctor who after everything they happened during his tenure.

Then you probably haven't heard most of his run with Charlie which is really great to start with, though it kind of peters out by the end with the last three stories in particular being not so good. But those initial four or five are really great.

Other good Sixth Doctor Big Finish stuff from 2008-2016 that stands out to me are The Wrong Doctors which is a multi-doctor story with two Colin Bakers and The Last Adventure which was made to give him a proper ending instead of "New season, guess he just fell over and regenerated." Also, his stories in the Old Doctors, New Monsters box sets are really good.

They did have a great dynamic together, better than her and Eight (though that may be controversial!)

Yeah, Charlie trying (poorly) to keep things under wraps while the Doctor can't stop poking gives them a great dynamic at first. But then it kind of goes on for a long time, way past the point where he should have gone, "Okay, you're explaining what's happening right now or I'm dumping you off where I found you." And then it wraps up with the wettest of wet farts in a story arc that wasn't good to begin with. At least there were a few more Evelyn stories that got added on after that.

Open Source Idiom

Yeah, the ending to that arc is very poor.

And it prompted a spinoff series that's in limbo because Nick Briggs takes on too many projects with seeming no real plan to finish them.

I have to go now. My planet needs me.
I'm really hoping Fourteen ends up different to Ten, or there's a proper narrative reason baked in that impacts the story, otherwise it'll feel like a gimmick.

Charley really needs a reunion with Eight and a proper ending to her story. They had India Fisher record a boxset last year, but it was stories set earlier in her timeline, rather than Charlotte Pollard season 3.

In terms of unresolved Six arcs, there's also what happens to the older Peri, and also Constance and Flip (given Lisa Greenwood's health issues, that's understandable).

Listening to Flip-Flop and that is an impressively awful story about how minorities and immigrants are going to overrun you and get rid of Christmas (seriously). It's a real "Who the gently caress thought this was acceptable?" audio.

On the other hand, Ghost Walk was decent. I think the ending was a bit muddled, but it had a great hook of a woman being haunted by the Doctor's ghost after the story's monster killed him centuries before, and the time scattered companions all being executed.

It's terrible, and then the author ran for the Labor party (last year?). lol

I love the Nyssa segment (which, okay, is James Goss repeating his own work from a Benny script, and the plot is the basis of one of his War Master plays). It's very much an anti-colonial piece, where the hero comes from the blessed liberal future and tries to enlighten the primitive local population, only to discover that the locals don't like being patronised very much. It's very good.

He wrote a recent play that's a pretty mean piece about how much the revolutionary politics of the show can often fall short, and another that's a critique of Moffat's (ableist) Sontaran characterisation. He's a really interesting writer.

It's my biggest hope AND fear: that there's just a collection sitting uncatalogued somewhere with somebody who has no idea that what they have is the only (potential) copy. On the one hand hopeful because we might eventually find it, on the other hand fearful because what if whoever ends up in charge of it has no idea of its significance and just dumps it/destroys it :ohdear:

Never liked Mel as a companion during the Baker years, but came to really enjoy her via Big Finish and I can't blame her for the tv show squandering her talents since it was squandering EVERYBODY'S talents back then, so really fascinated to see how she goes in the modern show.

Mel's absolute best moment on the original series was also her last, in that touching farewell scene she had with the Seventh Doctor.
