Mandatory disorganized nonsense expo70 wall of text Press START to skip cutscene so if people can't develop or make stuff on it, or get real work done that isn't office job... Or play real games, its going to exist in a weird middle-place, isn't it? siding with Unity is quite funny, because Unity generally don't get used for bigger more professional projects barring weirdly specific edge-cases and so you have a situation where the majority of Unity developers cannot justify the investment cost of the platform, and Epic don't want to play ball with Apple due to recent events. huh. vision looks like its where iPhone 1 was, before apps came out, and appstore totally transformed the way the company worked. I don't think Apple is in a position to give up control this time to users this time though unless they have to by being 2nd to market on software kinda big cuz epic's verse are probably going to be the ones who figure out how to roll VR/XR in terms of systems but not human facing poo poo so the fact we're seeing both halves come together is neat but these guys absolutely do not want to use the urinals next to each other out of fear the other one will think they're gay or something before both going back to their respective husbands for goon'ing instead of gooning, i think iPad AR's 3d pictures and video are going to be neat for lonely dads, 40 somethings with funkopops and people who's lives feel loving meaningless because they haven't felt genuine human connection since 2008 but the question is will it be a pain in the rear end to get porn onto it? signs point to yes. i kinda feel Apple has hit a situation where they're addicted to producing pointless little private APIs and minor systems which require an enormous amount of upkeep to talk to eachother as human-facing value-adds for features people will literally never use hardware and user convenience first, capability second, even if it makes the convenience into an annoying liability because its convenience for Cupertino aliens and investor bulletpoints, not real human beings with all the pointless crap we just saw, macos feels like microsoft word. i think if they setup kernel extensions properly with the way they're positioned with their software, they could have a psudo-consensus driven model of doing stuff across multiple machines fairly seamlessly through a sort of wiring harness of memory assuming the latency wouldn't be a massive issue and they've shown they really like using custom silicon to deal with latency like a sort of memory wiring harness or something but without the yuck and bullshit of distributed computing post 2000s but that's some pie in the sky hungry-apple poo poo like hypercards and hotsauce that absolutely just will not happen because risk for even extending the laptop its essentially pointless since you can't rip multiple windows or emulate multiple virtual displays properly so its not going to be a very strong desktop extension either, assuming 120 degrees and blurry text is your preferred way to be productive I think this is a show of force, and I think Apple missed the point of the platform the opportunity/cost isn't any good. Its the Ferrari/cool sports car of tech market for now. that'll probably change with time, but for now its a big nope unless you're an upper middle class suburbanite who's too old to technology, a tech bro who wants to know what the fuss is about, an investor, or someone who works at a firm above a certain size (privacy screen and flights are neat for findorks and bizwads) who needs to justify selling your soul by collecting pointless crap you think other people think is important so you don't feel inferior to every person you meet between your morning coffee, speed, bumps, and speedbumps what really makes me laugh is they put pro in the name despite the fact there's nothing else on the line. They knew developers would be underwhelmed by iPad AR, and would want to wait for a "pro" product, so this is Apple saying "no, this is it, this is the actual one we're making". I feel like this is something everybody will talk about, but almost nobody will actually use despite owning, and apple's ecosystem will be the reason. tl;dr: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHGczDHTDpo Expo70 fucked around with this message at 20:58 on Jun 5, 2023 |

I mean, on the technical side, it is. you can do that when you have a price point 3-5x that of the other guys and also an in-house chip design department. the problems are all software and the core concept of face computing

This poo poo seems to be either too small to be useful or too big to be usable. Its a really hard line to walk and I honestly dont think you can do it without just changing how people and society feel about wearing big poo poo on your face. If anyone can its apple, but I aint doin it any time soon.

anyways i saw the words "c++ swift interoperability" floating around before the vr headset thing and this could literally shave weeks off of my usual work i write cross platform c++ libraries that are used on ios and i'm always writing a c interface for them. handling of strings sucks. if i can create c++ classes in swift and call them straight up it will be a loving godsend.

Sagebrush posted:there are 8 pci slots in there. are there even 8 different pci cards you can buy for a mac It’s literally just super fast hard drives at the moment. The AfterBurner card is effectively built-in to the M2 and macOS on ARM doesn’t currently support external GPUs. Presumably they could sell bigger versions of their ML silicon on discrete expansion cards for people doing AI poo poo locally. And I guess Apple could sell discrete versions of its GPUs for offline rendering. I don’t ever see them supporting AMD (and definitely not NVidia) ever again. You can’t even get the Intel Mac Pro anymore now and I think there are some AMD GPUs that Apple/AMD never wrote drivers for that were available when the Intel Mac Pro was still available.
