really wish reddit and discord's positions were switched, as one of them is a platform I use sometimes when bored and the other is one I only used when absolutely forced to and hate every moment of my time on

A hot take but tbh I feel like a lot of the decline in services lies almost squarely at the feet of consumer behavior. I mean yeah the netflix solution is bad and like p much every kind of drm just ends up hurting actual customers more than the people "stealing" so they're gonna bleed customers left and right but it's also weird as gently caress to have been using your ex's netflix for the last decade. The service was already cheap to pay for on an individual basis we only got here because everyone seems to think they should get free poo poo online forever. The tradeoff for free poo poo online forever has been obtrusive ads, and services that start off at a lost with investments and then turn bad once they have a monopoly. I see people bemoaning news paywals in this thread but news was never really free, you previously paid for newspapers because the journalists needed to get paid somehow for their work. Instead they now just get money from their corporate advertisers, and no surprise that creates a huge conflict of interest in journalism. SA works as a site because we give money to the site to keep it going and in return get a forum we like to use. Twitter, reddit, discord, whatever, is only going to stay "free" for so long in that it costs money to run and that money needs to come from somewhere. Everytime you utilize a free service you're p much willing the corporate panopticon into more power. Yeah I know boycotts don't really work because we're too undisciplined to give up our treats on a wide scale and government regulation/intervention is the only real path forwards but this poo poo is all a very predictable outcome of "the money has to come from somewhere".

That's been the entire SV lifecycle of apps that "disrupt industries" it's flagrantly cheese on a mousetrap and yet we all take a bite.

Capitalism requires infinite growth. Every year you must make more money than last year. And that was fine for Netflix for a while because there were plenty of new subscribers. Then they hit the wall where every English speaking person who was going to get a subscription got it. They tried expanding internationally and that didn't work. So, if you can't get new subscribers, how do you make more money? Increase revenue, lower costs. You can't increase revenue by increasing subscriptions anymore, so better cut your production costs and raise the prices on existing subscribers. That means all your customers are now getting shittier programs that cost them more. Maybe you can convert a few of the old account shares into new subscribers if you're lucky.

I think that while a lot of people use Reddit for porn, unlike Tumbler there are also a lot of people that don’t and never visit NSFW stuff. What I don’t know is what the porn ratio is though and how much traffic would leave if they spun off the porn part. I presume they wouldn’t be stupid enough to just kill it rather than spinning it off.
