American Prestige did an episode on semiconductors and macro policy around it. Pretty good listen and explains what kind of policy irt things like export controls would look like if China/U.S. escalates further. Hint: It's not good and the U.S./EU sounds like it would go hard AF on China.

Norton posted:why is every thing turning to poo poo so fast? capitalism has been around for a long time and companies could have jacked up prices like they are doing now at any point in the past 100 years. i can't imagine our ruling class ever cared about poor people so it can't be they are just more evil now. There isn't much unrest to speak of in the West, consumer-facing corporations have correctly read the room and are squeezing people more because they can. Yes, financialization of everything, the perfusion of various sorts of digital business models and digital assets, and the de facto legalization of fraud via lack of enforcement/destruction of the regulatory state mean there are all sorts of wacky hockey stick get rich schemes that actually work. The rich in the US are heading back to gilded age ratios of wealth versus the poor. It's impossible to say if this trend will continue in the longer term, one would expect a reaction at some point. Countries are all doing their own things, the US isn't the only extractive player in the international market these days. The barrier to entry of starting a business is very low, but competition can be crushed using a variety of anti-competitive cartel practices. If you start a really good company that beats the odds and those practices you will typically be bought out by one of the big players and your business will be integrated in their model. Frictionless, instant communication between business leaders may makes price-fixing a bit easier, but it's not remotely a new practice. So far, environmental issues have had less of an impact on prices than things like war and trade war and flat out profiteering, in my view, but of course these things all feed into one another. Environmental destruction can actually lead to lower prices in the short term. Cheap Brazilian beef! Cheap Alaskan oil! Etc. Money printer definitely played a big role in the current inflation mess. Technology, systems, and society have changed. Capital just does its thing in the latest context.

https://twitter.com/sistinechaebol/status/1669380520281624577 This is the rear end in a top hat who wrote the NYT piece on instapot’s bankruptcy and neglected to mentioned the equity firm that owns them taking out $500 million and paying out half that in dividends as a reason why the company has so much debt. I really don’t understand the NYT anymore, it’s a garbage rag. They can’t have it both ways claiming they’re impartial and just reporting facts when they leave out huge facts like that. Their garbage “reporting” didn’t go unnoticed. https://twitter.com/lib_crusher/status/1669450244399017986

My understanding is that the Reddit mod complaint is that they need the third party apps for effective moderation because the native Reddit one sucks. So even if they install scab mods they are still gonna make everything suck if they kill the ability to easily moderate a website that requires constant and aggressive moderation to even just be a baseline level of lovely.

Nazis and pedos are an opportunistic infection. If you leave a web form with a post button on the open internet without moderation long enough they just set up shop.
