Let's not forget the oxygen supply time was stated by the "Sure! Why not?" guy, was almost certainally completely untested and likely with very little relation to the actual time. Especially if those inside are panicky and breathing hard.

I think the most amazing thing is that this stupid machine had apparently made the dive previously without killing everyone on board.

I think maybe the sub just wasn't innovative enough. We need another billionaire to also build their own janky-rear end sub to show everyone that, actually, unregulated diving vessels are absolutely fine. It might take a few more goes but we'll get there eventually!
The next sub will drop dead weight from the surface, crashing into the wreck for the best view yet, and have a single big red button that will blow ballast and send it rocketing back to the surface. A lot could go wrong but a lot of unnecessary expenses - like Logitech controllers - could be eliminated from the design.

also, its dark to think about but there are definitely multiple teams of video creators (both amateur and 'professional') scrambling to prep a doco/video essay on this incident. More content for the content gods!

its bizarre to think about, how everything eventually turns into content. Like biomatter into oil or something. Content is plastic and we are the plastic landfills.

It's janky because they never thought they'd need to use it. Why spend $Xmillion on safety features? In their mind, it's already safe, and spending money on it is just waste.

Irish media finally found someone local with a connection to this business.

https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/irish-oil-boss-who-visited-titanic-wreck-says-hes-hopeful-for-five-sub-passengers/a687353788.html

quote:

IRISH oil executive Oisin Fanning – who twice visited the Titanic wreck with OceanGate Expeditions – has said he’s hopeful the five passengers in the tourist submarine who were visiting the ill-fated ship will be rescued alive.
...

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today’ programme on Wednesday morning, Mr Fanning described Mr Henri-Nargeolet and Mr Stockton as “consummate professionals”.
To be honest, if I was in trouble, I’d want to be on a sub with them,” he said.
Mr Fanning believes the people on board the submersible will be “conserving energy from day one”.
...

Mr Fanning said he thinks the passengers will be advised “not to panic”.
They have everything that’s required,” according to Mr Fanning, adding that there’s even equipment to soak up the carbon dioxide passengers exhale.
He added: “They have all the equipment there. These are consummate businessmen. They will be used to not panicking as well. I think they will follow directions perfectly.”
“They will conserve as much energy as possible. That is, if they are trapped, in the hope that somebody will come down and release them,” said the oil executive.
Mr Fanning thinks that something has probable “broken off” the submersible, which cut contact with the mothership on the surface.

The vast majority of marine (and aviation) accidents are a result of operator error, not mechanical failure. As a result, simply focusing on classing the vessel does not address the operational risks. Maintaining high-level operational safety requires constant, committed effort and a focused corporate culture – two things that OceanGate takes very seriously and that are not assessed during classification.

Dumbest loving thing I've ever seen.

lol. hm, i wonder why most marine accidents are from human error. probably not because the mechanical side of things are engineered, made, tested, etc a billion times over to the strictest of standards. all subs are basically the same thing, so it's just a case of the people on board playing silly buggers. well not on THIS one, we are all very professional in here. *jerks the controller upwards as i press the jump button under the impression that it will make it go up higher*
