Don't be a loving chud. Making fun of things kills people.

The covid thread people have basically cultivated wearing masks and respirators into a really weird hobby. No one is asking them to stop i think, so much as acknowledge what a stupid waste of time it is, like all hobbies.

I spend 1000s of dollars on steam games I'll never play, you wander around the local farmers market looking like a bad cosplay of moltar from space ghost. They're both bad, but I'm not claiming that if everyone simply played more indie pixel metroidvanias then the world would be a better place (even though it would)

there was one goon living in china with his wife during the lockdowns (might still be there, don't remember his name) who gave a pretty detailed and enlightening breakdown of what it was like over there - basically the lockdowns were successful not because of the stern but gentle hand of xi jinping thought but because the culture had successfully stigmatized people who didn't take appropriate safety measures, as opposed to the US where the opposite rapidly happened. cities still had a lot of trouble with institutional inertia in the face of evidence (government workers hosing down streets with disinfectant long past the point it had been shown not to help and that no one particularly enjoyed breathing in bleach) and logistical/supply distribution problems, not to mention the risk of snap lockdowns shutting you into whatever building you might be occupying away from home most of the thread ignored him and most of the ones who replied did so to call him a liar

A recurring theme in a lot of these topical events is that a lot of Americans consider following the rules as something beneath them, so people completely freak out at being told what to do because it's supposed to be something that only lower class people have to deal with. There's rather obvious historical reasons for how this became the culture. edit: come to think of it it's kind of like a diffused version of the submarine thing. We're rich, we don't have to listen to safety precautions or basic science because having this much money means being able to ignore the rules and do whatever you want. mycot fucked around with this message at 21:48 on Jun 24, 2023 |
