turn it all around

I wonder how hard it is and how long it takes to roll out DLC with current wrestlers. Like, I know Swerve isn't in the game and it seems like the cutoff was right before he got signed. But he could be someone who pops up relatively soon since he's been there a while now, right? How long would it take to get like a Takeshita, Willow, or Jay White in there if they started now?

Genuine questions, not complaining about the roster. I have no idea how long this kind of poo poo takes in video game development world.

From the footage I've seen so far I think the biggest bummer is going to be the the roster just clearly being a snapshot of 2 years ago AEW and not really reflecting on current day AEW. It's easy to imagine a version of this where Don Callis is in the place of Regal and the game has a more current roster that feels like AEW today. Some of the models are also not great, but it also looks like some of the images in the character selection and models in the main menu look completely different from the models during a match. Like Nick Jackson's portrait in the character select is really bad but the model in match looks a whole lot better.

They should update this with Callis giving you tips like 'if you're playing offline, grab your opponents controller and break it'

Tiny Lister, yes, in his Summerslam 88 attire. Why he's in a pack with Funhouse Bray, Joe Gacy, and Blair Davenport is largely unclear.

Which, not a lot of those names with the exception of Bray and maybe Race are singing to me personally, I also am not seeing any names that I would consider as core/required/whatever as FTR, Claudio, Keith Lee are to fight forever, presumably because they're just on disk in 2K's famously large roster

Oh dope

And at least six of those have been in recent games, so they're making you pay for people who were once on disc characters.

Pretty fun seeing all the wrestlers who did make the cut excitedly sharing clips/images of people playing as them in a video game. :3:

So how does finishing a Road to... career work with Create-A-Wrestlers? I'm halfway through mine and am wondering if I'll be able to take my wrestler through a second time to finish leveling up his stats or if he's just going to have to live with whatever he gets from a single career. Any info on that out there from the crazy heads who're already done with theirs?

Fight Forever currently has a lot of warts that aren't gameplay-related, but reviewers have to review it as though the game is what it is out of the box, and a $60 wrestling game lacking key features of the promotion it is built on and CAW options that would have been considered unacceptable and outdated a decade ago is not going to be well-reviewed, nor should it really be?

All the reviews point out that there's a lot of potential due to the gameplay itself being really strong, so we'll just have to see if those problems get fixed sooner rather than later.
Basically this. Reviewers can’t really take the “it’ll be patched in” copium tack that fans can take re: features. The reaction sounds about comparable to the first PS4-era WWE game that was similarly feature-basic. “Could be great next year” is not not a good look these days for full price games, even for franchises.

If it comforts you, you can reason that years of 2K and THQ depressed enthusiasm for wrestling games generally, and that Fight Forever just isn’t reaching escape velocity / distinguishing itself dramatically enough to overcome the general sense that it’s all basically the same.

It’s also the case that vintage style game design plays well with its cult but often doesn’t translate to good reviews (or, often, good sales). Which is to say most people aren’t making like, super deep or informed comparative analysis about the mouthfeel of strikes and chain wrestling relative to current alternative or classic games in the genre (just ask any developer of a crowdfunded retro revival game whether market demand reflected initial enthusiasm).

Time will tell on sales, I guess, but I don’t think the hype was really there in the broader culture. And yeah, my assumption would be that you really need a killer CAW suite to snag most casual interest in the game from ppl who aren’t invested in the AEW brand.

I just tested it with my guy since it didn’t take long to finish the first time.

If you start it again, the stats are reset forever from the looks of it. Once you get to the menus between events all the upgrades I bought previously are gone.

It makes sense, otherwise everyone would just grind out one perfect super wrestler instead of just picking Daniel Bryan Danielson in the first place.

I ran into a very annoying Malakai Black player, he kept doing this incredibly fast low kick that instantly tripped my guy over onto his face. Not sure what move it is, maybe I’ll do some stuff with Malakai tomorrow and see if I can find it.

I guess that makes sense. I've enjoyed messing around with the customization. It's a solid engine but the AI, even on Hard, is pretty weak. The biggest issue I run into is that some of the blocks (i.e. storylines) are pretty unfair. Had a Pape where it was me in a three on one vs Death Triangle and my wrestler just alternated pingponging between all three wrestlers' finishers until it was mercifully over. Big Brain Tony would never book that.

Is there any way in engine to see the various wrestlers' stats? I couldn't find one.

I had the same match but I managed to win it very easily and quickly by getting PAC counted out...despite it being a lights out match.

From what I've played so far the reviews have been spot on, fun solid gameplay surrounded by alot of janky stuff.

Casino Battle Royal is completely flawed and boring, had to quit as the AI just wouldn't throw anyone out and there was no indicator saying how many people were left to come out so I just lost patience.

Every match I've had with Mox he's ended up bleeding at some point though so atleast that is very accurate

Here is a mildly interesting (possibly) data point about the game. Two channels I watch on YouTube put full, unedited Career Mode playthroughs (I haven't watched them because I want to essentially stay blind until this weekend but they're advertised as such) which took the following amount of time:

Cultaholic, as Kenny: three hours twenty minutes
DenkOps, as a CAW, four hours two minutes

So, if we're to play career mode repeatedly for each CAW, I guess it's good we can bang one out in an afternoon.

Also definitely totally not looking like a knockoff Max the Impaler because "it doesn't count because Max is just some indie wrestler" or "it doesn't count because they're supposed to be different things" per the usual stand up for WWE crowd.

turn it all around

Had just enough time between work and dogs and Dynamite to get my new hard drive installed in the PS5 and install the game. We looked at the character selection and my partner laughed uncontrollably at Wardlow saying “He looks like a thumb!” over and over. Some of the models on the character select screen are preeeettttyy bad (Andrade is terrible, Jade looks unfinished, Nick Jackson looks squashed, Eddie Kingston is hilarious) but lots of others are really loving good.

Haven’t played yet - will have to see how tired I am after Dynamite and if I want to mess around at all or wait until tomorrow.
