In a rare, wide-ranging interview with The Washington Post, Zaluzhny expressed frustration that while his biggest Western backers would never launch an offensive without air superiority, Ukraine still has not received modern fighter jets but is expected to rapidly take back territory from the occupying Russians. American-made F-16s, promised only recently, are not likely to arrive until the fall — in a best-case scenario.

His troops also should be firing at least as many artillery shells as their enemy, Zaluzhny said, but have been outshot tenfold at times because of limited resources.

So it “pisses me off,” Zaluzhny said, when he hears that Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive in the country’s east and south has started slower than expected — an opinion publicly expressed by Western officials and military analysts and also by President Volodymyr Zelensky, though Zaluzhny was not referring to Zelensky. His troops have gained some ground — even if it’s just 500 meters — every day, he said.

“This is not a show,” Zaluzhny said Wednesday in his office at Ukraine’s General Staff headquarters. “It's not a show the whole world is watching and betting on or anything. Every day, every meter is given by blood.”

“Without being fully supplied, these plans are not feasible at all,” he added. “But they are being carried out. Yes, maybe not as fast as the participants in the show, the observers, would like, but that is their problem.”

Maybe making your war plans based off of other people giving you stuff is a bad idea and peace should be sought-after instead

This reminded me of how common it is for people to make fun of the Trabant. Which, sure, there's some reasons, if you're car-brained. But one of the things I've seen people bring up and laugh about was that "it didn't rust". Like that's a bad thing, and a real failure of communist thinking. :psyduck:

(the reason it didn't rust is because the body panels were made with duraplast, which is a bit like fibreglass but used cotton waste)

Duraplast was a white metal that was very durable, which made it suitable for uses that required a durable material, such as protective equipment. It was much stronger than many other metals, and was thus widely used throughout the galaxy by Imperial and New Republic Navies. The main element used in synthesizing duraplast was carbon.

Duraplast was also used in armor, such as Katarn-class commando armor and variants of Mandalorian armor, and was capable of offering protection up to light grenades, Verpine shatter gun rounds, medium slugs, and light laser cannon rounds. Duraplast could also be reinforced to be extremely resistant to EMP and ion cannon warfare.

Duraplast may resist to several strikes of lightsabers if combined with cortosis for instance.[1]

During the Cold War, Duraplast was used in Republic Trooper and Imperial Heavy Trooper Armor.[1]

i Read this poo poo trying to find out more

quote:

YAKIMA TRAINING CENTER, Wash. - When 2nd Lt. Shannon McDonnell assumed her new position as a platoon leader and fire direction officer with 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, nothing was official.

It wasn’t until she’d had four of her patrol caps taped to the backs of rockets and blown to pieces that she was certifiably a member of the team.

Then, McDonnell, who is still brand new to the artillery career field, could truly say she’s been welcomed.

Although it might appear a cruel and undeserved hail to the outside eye, Shannon sees it as more of an honor. After all, it’s tradition.

“It was kind of like my initiation into the platoon,” said the new leader "both authoritatively and officially" of 2nd Platoon, Battery B, 5-3 FA Bn., and also the only female fire direction officer for the battalion, a Joint Base Lewis-McChord asset that falls under 17th Fires Brigade.

Her patrol caps were destroyed by her fire direction control section May 23 during a field exercise at Yakima Training Center in Central Washington State that tasked them with providing artillery support for 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, in the brigade’s three-week YTC rotation.

Now, she has a collection of torn, tattered caps, but what’s more is the tangible memory she has of a custom literally decades in the making. The rite of passage that accompanies a fire direction officer’s first live shoot with the High Mobility Artillery Rocket system, the unit’s signature big gun.

“You get a new lieutenant, and it’s only tradition to shoot their patrol cap,” said Sgt. 1st Class Terry Biddle, platoon sergeant for 2nd Platoon, Battery B, 5-3 FA Bn.

Biddle explained that on a new second lieutenant’s first fire with the rocket system, his or her patrol cap is stolen and taped to the back plate of one of the rockets to be fired. As the rocket leaves, the back blast destroys the cap. Finally, after the shoot is finished, someone from the lieutenant’s crew retrieves the headgear, has it signed by each member of the team and returns it to the lieutenant.

He said it’s a practice unique to the community of Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, like the HIMAR, where something can actually be attached to the backs of rounds.

its this. It's always this. There's a ceiling to your aspirations in your home country and when you reach it you are at the goldilocks zone of not really caring about the benefits your home country gives you in the form of subsidized education/transport etc. While american cultural products just gives you a story of your ceiling getting higher and you living at the center of the world (NYC/LA). You go there and there's hobos outside being beaten by cops.

The vague freedom that contemporary people present as America's defining quality is not exactly political freedom or personal freedom, but the mental liberation from any thoughts or concerns that you don't personally have a stake in. The draw is actually the idea that the End of History is true, that you can go and do whatever youre good at, make money, and never get called in for anything bigger than yourself. Along the way, you can develop whatever neuroses you like, pick up an affinity for some cult/diet/subnational independence movement/zumba class, and just be you without being sucked back into the Old World conditions where you might be born into a social class or active political system. It's natural then for the middle-class immigrants to the US to skew towards small business tyrants or self-absorbed professionals, the system is made for them.

Russia is still at 'normal' conscription augmented by volunteer sign ups, right? Because it seems like Ukraine is putting all their hopes on wearing down the Russian defenders, but if they're getting rotated out at a regular pace for fresh troops I don't see how that can happen. Meanwhile is anyone getting discharged from the Ukrainian army because they've done their time?
