Even ignoring that it is spectacularly devoid of material analysis. Paragraphs of "nobody inteded it to be this way" and "there's no reason why capitalism has to work like this" and never a thought spared to the fact that for hundreds of years it has resulted in squeezing every penny out of worker and customer for the benefit of the owners and so perhaps we should stop wondering about "oh but think of the possibilities if it didn't do that" and simply do something else.

In the postmodern condition under neoliberalism, truth is a product. Reality has a habit of disagreeing though, as was seen during the mismanagement of covid.

"you must show how capitalism can work for the common good" is a statement of truth as product, even though it makes about as much sense as "Now, tool companies, you must show how I can hit myself in the dick with this hammer without it hurting"

Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!
This closing down bank accounts stuff:

Firstly, it's been happening to quite a lot of people in the last few years, innocent, regular members of the public.

Example Heil article - there have been quite a few: https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/saving/article-9966767/Anger-Banks-shut-accounts-money-laundering-panic.html

Secondly, an anecdote:

We have a bank account for managing the flats and I'm signed up for internet banking on it. Can't do anything except view & download statements because it's dual authorisation and none of the other signatories - all in their late 80s - will have anything to do with internets or emails or all that new fangled stuff.
Anyway, I signed on to it one day and found a notice saying "we requested this information and if you don't supply this information within the next 30 days we may have to close your account".

So I got on the case and got it sorted. However, we had NEVER received any letter or email or phone call requesting the information in the first place and if it hadn't have been for me signing up to the internet banking and actually signing in to it that day we would never have known and the next thing we would have had our account closed.

The information they wanted was because they decided that the list of shareholders (all of us, the flat lessees, are also shareholders in the management/freeholder co) was inadequate. Companies House only requires annual update, but for some reason Barclays in their infinite wisdom had decided that eg "Mrs Brown" was insufficient shareholder details and also, we added a director when the other director get seriously ill (and since then deceased). So I've had to update Co House 'confirmation statement' 2x since then and should have done it again another 3 times since November - not free, £13 a pop - as people sell up or drop dead.

So for all we know it could be something as simple as that.

They're all coming out of the woodwork to defend privatisation now. Probably because water somehow manages to be even stupider than energy in the way it was done, so a big failure is a good focal point for nationalisation talk.

Not sure why they're worried - nobody's going to win the next election and nationalise anything anyway.

quote:

The former Conservative leader Michael Howard has stood by the privatisation of the water sector, of which he was a leading proponent, despite the crisis surrounding Thames Water.

...

“The point about public ownership is this: if you have the industry in public ownership, it has to compete for resources with health, with education, with the police, with all the other legitimate demands on the public purse, and water when it was in public ownership was way down the queue,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“When you release it into the private sector, you have recourse to private capital. You can make the investment that’s needed.”

If only there was some way the goverment could get access to privately held capital.

OwlFancier

"You" get access to private capital by giving private capital public services. That's how "you" get the capital.

I am being informed that in fact "they" still have the capital and also the public service and are now asking for public capital because they spent all the private capital and public service on yachts.

Nevertheless.

Tory MPs want to block overseas workers from UK care homes in extreme immigration plan

In a challenge to Rishi Sunak’s authority, Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson will speak at the launch of the New Conservatives Group that wants to block social care workers getting visas

The MPs, led by Tom Hunt, are angry that he has failed to deliver on the 2019 Conservative manifesto pledge to slash the numbers of people arriving in this country.

Net immigration stood at 226,000 when Boris Johnson made the promise, but it has risen to an all time high of 606,000 since then.

In order to reduce the numbers, the group wants Mr Sunak to take radical action, including ending a scheme to give visas to carers to fill staff vacancies.

Social care workers, care assistants and home care worker roles are currently included on the Shortage Occupation List.

This means staff are eligible for the Health and Care Worker visa, lasting either three or five years.

Latest figures show there were an estimated 165,000 vacancies in the adult care sector in England last year, up 52% from the year before.

This could be one way to kill off the boomer Tory supporters
