in Bellamy’s Looking Backward everyone is paid the same amount but the shittier or harder the job, the less hours you work. I always liked that, plus everyone retires at 45 and everyone gets to eat for free at industrial kitchens. my high school government teacher had us read it and I think it helped me reject capitalism early, thanks nameless teacher I forgot. I kinda wanna just print a ton of copies of it and hand it out, it’s a pretty American socialism that even doesn’t use that word so maybe it’ll work on modern people too

like, if we're going to look at restaurants, and even gig economy food delivery, as capitalist affectations, then the response is having a lot more canteens and pantries

there was hype, people used chatgpt en masse for literally every use case they could imagine, and it turns out it’s not good for literally everything. in many cases it’s just a toy eg writing dumb poems, making dnd posts.

once again, i use this every day at work for computer poo poo. it is genuinely useful in some cases, and this is why there’s a plateau and not a complete dead drop in usage.

also lol this is monthly website visits? how about API usage? every tech company in the world is cramming this poo poo into their products (for stupid features in 99% of cases tho)

Holy poo poo they're actually trying to say pre-1949 ROC debt is valid? lmao

quote:

In 1938, during its conflict with Japan, the ROC defaulted on its sovereign debt. After the military victory of the communists, the ROC government fled to Taiwan. The People’s Republic of China was eventually recognized internationally as the successor government of China. Under well-established international law, the “successor government” doctrine holds that the current government of China, led by the Chinese Communist Party, is responsible for repayment of the defaulted bonds.

A private group of American citizens holds a large quantity of these gold-denominated bonds. This citizen-led group, the American Bondholders Foundation (ABF), serves as trustee with power of attorney for some 20,000 bondholders, whose bonds are valued at well more than $1 trillion.

quote:

Unfortunately, the U.S. failed to take such a common-sense stance. To this day, China has had access to U.S. capital markets while openly rejecting its sovereign debt obligations to American bondholders.

Lest anyone wonder about the age of these bonds, it is irrelevant. What matters is that this is a sovereign obligation. As recently as 2010, the German government made its last payment for reparations from World War I. In 2015 Great Britain made payments on bonds issuances that dated from the 18th century.

Yeah just cut China's access to capital markets off. Totally doable and won't at all backfire.

quote:

The Biden administration plans to curb China’s access to cloud computing services provided by companies such as Microsoft MSFT, +0.12% and Amazon.com AMZN, -0.29%, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Citing sources characterized as familiar with the situation, the report indicated that the new rules meant U.S. companies would likely need government authorization before allowing Chinese customers access to cloud services using advanced AI chips.

The latest volley coincides with a Sino-American chip war and comes a week after the Wall Street Journal reported that the White House was mulling a ban on the export of AI chips to China. That would make it more difficult for companies such as Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices AMD, -1.04% to sell advanced chips to any Chinese company working on AI applications.

Nvidia NVDA, +0.45% Chief Financial Officer Collette Kress has said that if the U.S. escalates the ban it will result in a “permanent loss of opportunities” globally.

The Journal report suggested the likes of Nvidia and AMD could prospectively secure government licenses allowing them to continue to do businesses with Chinese entities.

The Biden administration in October slapped a ban on China’s import of high-end chips, and in January it put curbs on the country’s purchase of lithography machines used in the production of high-performance chips.

Beijing announced Monday that it would tighten exports of metals used in the making of advanced chips.

The U.S. Commerce Department is due to roll out the new restrictions in the next few weeks, as part of export controls on semiconductors that began last October, the Journal’s sources reportedly said. The Commerce Department declined to comment on that report, and representatives of Amazon and Microsoft didn’t have any immediate response, the Journal reported.

MarketWatch has also reached out to the Commerce Department, Microsoft and Amazon for responses.

The latest ripple comes ahead of a meeting between Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and senior Chinese government officials aimed at trying to repair a relationship between the two countries that has seen intensifying strain, notably over the past year.

Dumb imo
