He managed to deliver on longer tweets, that's about it.

I know he promised creators would get money from ads that show on their tweet threads, and then announced that it had started, and then a four months later said in a few weeks. It hasn't happened yet, half a year after he said it had started.

(Also total lol that across the entire Twitter platform, half a year's worth of ad sharing revenue only amounts to $5 million.)

Also apparently if you decide later you don't like Threads and wanna close your account, you have to delete your Instagram account too. Might be just a temporary thing, but still lol

In response to a lot of posts about this, the Instagram head guy posted that you can deactivate your Threads account, which hides the account and everything you've ever posted, but you can't full-on delete it and keep Instagram because right now they're literally just the same account. But they're working on a way to make it so you can individually delete the Threads account if you want.

Some things about Threads are kind of half-baked right now because it wasn't supposed to launch until late this month but Zuckerberg saw Twitter completely poo poo the bed over the weekend and said "gently caress it, ship it"

Judging by how fast adoption is, that was probably a smart move.

The head of Instagram also mentioned upcoming features: "And there are tons of basics that are missing: search, hashtags, a following feed, graph syncing, fedeverse support, messaging maybe…"

So, basically the rest of Twitter.

apparently nobody cares about being spied on where they post memes and look at porn, so there's no need for all the backdoor cloak and dagger poo poo that snowden exiled himself over

they can just tap into the data directly and the world would willingly give it to them if the content and ui are good

i'm sure there are some limitations to their backdoors, and they probably pay the social media companies money for access and support anyway

cut out the middlemen and get full access forever

also, the more the american companies keep shooting themselves in the foot, the more people migrate to tiktok where they won't have access. we can't allow a social media gap.

Here is a story I’ve been telling people I know who are thinking of making a Threads account.

About a month, month and a half ago, I was using Facebook messenger to talk to an old friend.

I’d had a Facebook account from maybe 2008-2020, and then killed it. I started a new one early this year mainly to be able to see pics and posts by my family, who live a few thousand miles away. I hadn’t really done much on Facebook besides look at those posts, and join a couple of Star Trek/SW nerd groups, and post some funny dog/cat videos.

Anyway, I was talking to this friend of mine and we’d been talking about life, marriage, kids, etc.

I mentioned that my wife had been pre-menopausal for a while and was going through some poo poo with it.

My friend, who is a woman, said “Oh yeah, me too. My doctor wanted to put me on an estrogen therapy drug, but I didn’t want to do it, because there is an increased risk of cancer associated with taking some of this stuff.”

Anyway it was late, she signed off, I switched over to FB and started scrolling, and for the first time ever, I was served with an ad meant to appeal to menopausal women.

I continued scrolling down and more and more of these ads appeared, about various drugs meant to lessen the stuff women go through with menopause.

Some of them specifically stated “this product doesn’t use xxxx which is known to increase risks of cancer, rather it uses this other substance yyyy, which is not associated with any increased risk of cancer”

It was 100% clear, that an AI had been reading the things my friend and I had been talking about minutes before, and FB began feeding me ads related to the exact things she and I had said.

And I mean, it was immediate. The moment I closed FB messenger and switched over to FB, these ads were there, where I’d never seen a single one on this FB account previously.

If this is what FB and its messenger app do, imagine what Threads does.

Still can't believe how poo poo the Threads roll out has been. Literally all they had to do was add a feed option where it's just people you follow. It's hard to imagine a more off-putting feed of posts that is SWF. If you want to be 'the next Twitter' bewildering that you wouldn't at least make the initial experience a good one and crank the ads/influencer bullshit later once people are using your app.

It's about time for my once per decade ban for being a consistently terrible poster.

There's a post-script to this story, which is that it would have gotten the same information about you if your friend was just talking about a conversation they had with you. Actually being part of the conversation makes it easier for them to manage, but to be truly out of the algorithm it's not just a question of not participating. You have to also never be mentioned by anyone else that is. It's like those "Check your ancestry" programs that the cops use to check DNA. It's not just a question of you not doing it. Did anyone related to you do it? You are now a potential data point. They can't directly match to you, but they can match to someone who is clearly a cousin of yours and then go "So what cousins do they have?" to find you.
