It's going to pay off eventually--I'm sure of it.

Any day now.

I mean, part of the rise in disability payments is the economy getting shittier and people finding ways to get themselves on disability because it's the only variant of welfare that doesn't eventually end and tell you get a job or be destitute. That's been a trend since long before covid appeared.

I'm sure covid has also added more disabled people too, though.

I'm not saying I blame them for it, to be clear. People need to live. But even when there was no clear source of increasing disabilities, disability payments were going to more and more people.

Everybody that's talked to who's disabled says it is the hardest loving program possible to get in, excluding tons of people who are actually disabled. I doubt there's a whole bunch of new people showing up to the office going "yeah my back hurts" and getting instant Medicare.

It is extremely hard to get on disability most places taking years to get accepted at times and they're constantly pulling shenanigans to try and get you kicked out on a technicality.

I was under the impression that that's a response to what I was talking about: the bureaucrats realized it was becoming Other Welfare and started throwing up more and more obstacles and inventing excuses to kick people off it.

Anyway, I'm not D&D brained enough to looking for citations and prove my case or whatever. Whatever the mixture of increasing rates of disability or increasing desperation in the populace, it's still another chip in the Doomsday Econ pile.

Lol my brother has neuromuscular dystrophy; his muscles are atrophying at a ridiculous date and there's a very non-zero chance he won't live to be 50. It took him several years and several lawyers to get onto SSDI, and he basically can't earn more than a pittance doing any kind of work, lest he lose the pittance he gets monthly.

So many people on disability could, and would want to, do a limited amount of work within their abilities (poo poo, even making Etsy stuff or w/ever). But lol, no.

this paragraph seems very anecdotal and that’s being polite but I’d love for it to be true because that would point to an engineering spirit amongst the poor to use the systems for good and a greater success rate than my anecdotal experiences

I thought it was pretty much commonly acknowledged that disability claims went up after Clinton "reformed" welfare.

Numbers are in thousands.

If there's a projected downward trend it's probably because of deaths (including the "boomer remover"), as well as rejected claims.

Will you stop going crazy in there?
The real estate market is behaving exactly how it's supposed to in an environment where tons of free money continues to slosh around and there's no good reason not to invest it into real estate.

It's literally common wisdom at this point to "invest" in real estate (ie, become a landlord), so what the gently caress is supposed to happen? On top of investment groups buying up whole neighborhoods, you have every financial guru on the planet telling anyone with the capability to take a second mortgage that they should buy buy buy to make that sweet passive income. There's an entire loving TV network telling people to rip apart perfectly good houses and resell them for a massive profit after a cheap and lovely renovation.

Neighbor down the street has gotten zero offers on their house, no one real can afford it with 7-8% mortgage rates, if they lower the price enough to sell they won’t have enough cash to trade up to their next bigger house, no one told you to have 4 kids perhaps stay put and finish the basement instead

anyways
