I'll be honest, I played Doom Eternal for about 30 minutes and didn't enjoy the low ammo limits so hosed it off

WAY WAY TOO LOUD

Yeah the ammo limits are really bad. Doom 2016 was probably too generous (and that one rune giving you infinite ammo just breaks it completely) but Eternal went too far in the other direction.

I think it's useful to play Doom 2016 before trying Eternal. Eternal definitely feels like it's building off the previous game, for one thing. Plus if you wind up liking Eternal I think 2016 is more difficult to go back to afterwards, and even though I like Eternal more I still think 2016 was really good fun.

It's a piece of JUNK!
Doom 2016 may not have been a completely worthy successor to the originals, but I do think it came closer than most other big-budget FPSes up to that point. I wish the level design was a little more consistent, but the combat was a breath of fresh air. That's worth something.

When you think about it, Doom '16 was so much closer to the classics in spirit that a whole bunch of modders made "Doom 4" mods for the old games that transplant its gameplay. I don't think the same can be said for Eternal.

No, they did that for Eternal too:

Opposite for me.

I think 2016’s consistency and relative simplicity makes it a breeze to revisit. Eternal might be the most exhilarating game I’ve ever played first time out, but I find it a bit arduous to go back to.

What I was trying to say was more like:

If you like Eternal more then you'll probably STILL like 2016 enough if you play it first so you've lost nothing.

I'm just trying to help people maximise their Doom based enjoyment.

This is totally random but I feel like rambling, so. I'm getting tired of developers endlessly flogging the reboot horse. I get that strong IPs sell a lot of games. But like when a game is made without even one of the original people that made it, it just feels kind of.. cheap? I'm not sure how to describe this feeling.

Let's say all the members of a band are dead, and someone makes a new album with that bands title in the style of that bands music, we all know it's not that band. I'm not really trying to make any point here, I'm just kinda sad that we live in a society where we milk the gently caress out of old and dead poo poo instead of letting it stay old and dead and appreciating it for what it was.

Gonna get a developer of Theseus situation going. Mostly agreed though, a lot of these titles could stand on their own anyway. But I get it, name recognition.

Kazvall
Mar 20, 2009

Right, the fact that a lot of these games could stand on their own and become their own thing is a bit sad, too.

Then again, I am in no way upset that a new armored core is coming out. I guess because at least it's made by the same studio. Not that logically it makes any difference I highly doubt anyone who made the ps1 or 2 games is still around in any major capacity.

Anyways, I love contradicting myself. I suppose if I had to try and make any point it would be that if game is good nothing else really matters. But that baggage can be a lot and entirely kill off a great IP.

/coughs/ goodbye unreal

doom eternal hosed up by elaborating too much on doom guy. he was best as just 'the angriest man alive'

also each 'ability' giving a different resource made it feel a lot more videogamey. like i understand its a videogame, but being reminded of it pretty aggressively all the time takes you out of the universe. the extremely stupid plot also kinda did that but in a different way. glory kills refilling health has its own weird logic, but then when you get to 'the flamethrower refills armor' its like uhhh... why?

I would personally prefer for more games to be unnecessarily videogamey. I want Joel Lastofus to punch a zombie and have head-sized gold coins ricochet off the walls with a satisfying plink.

That HD asset pack is a very mixed bag - I liked what they did with the Many, but giving the cyborg midwife porn star boobs and a pretty face wasn’t necessary, and the rumbler lost some of its character in the upgrade. I’d stick with SHTUP - that’s the Shock Texture Upgrade Project, which is a comprehensive range of improvements from the subtle to the striking - and wait for Nightdive’s remaster, which incorporates the latter mod and apparently fine tunes some other things besides.

oh poo poo yeah i forgot nightdive was doing a remaster, I'll just wait for that

and yeah i really hated what they did with the midwife, they were meant to be horrifying, but the 90s like Poser boobs made them seem like something off deviantart

i'm enjoying the system shock 1 remake, but I think I like the setting of 2 more. The Many feel like a more thematically unified threat than the random grab-bag of stuff in SS1. the pterodactyls and floating giant viruses have been taking me out of the horror aspect of the setting, which was a lot stronger early on when it was just mutants and crude cyborgs.

Hell Gem
*If* they remake System Shock 2 I wonder what they'll do about the art style. The first game's remake is unique in that it's mixing old with new, lifting a lot of SS1's sprite design and colour palette directly and plugging them in to a modern engine, which gives it a real unique look, but SS2 just looks like any early-mid 3D game striving for (at the time) realism, lots of sterile corridors and the like that just look kind of bland nowadays.

Finished Slayers X. It was awesome but I think my save got corrupted as I died fighting the last boss but when I respawned there was nothing there, just level geometry but no sprites or enemies of any kind. The last autosave worked but any quicksaves after that seemed to screw it up again. Fortunately the last boss isn't that difficult after a few tries, but could do with having less health probably.

The bonus levels were fun and reminded me of my attempts at Build levels. I think I was in the Build editor when I heard Princess Diana died in a car crash
