if property taxes are regressive, why does lowering them benefit the wealthy

Does lowering sales tax benefit the wealthy?

Lowering property taxes benefits the wealthy because lowering taxes on owned land will, somehow, benefit landowners.

Property taxes in a no-income state are basically the only tax that rich people have to pay that's even a little bit commensurate with their wealth. And it's very minimally commensurate with their wealth.

Property tax relief seems like more of a rural/older Texan benefit because Millennials/Gen Z in cities have no hope of owning property.

Today my MIL was like "you all should wait until you own a house to buy a bigger bed" and I was like "that's not going to happen for at least another two decades".

Why don't you just ask your parents to buy you the house like this Texas Monthly article about young oil patch entrepreneurs with their rags to riches story of growing up in Highland Park and having their dad's friend invest $70 million in their start-up when they were 28.

It will be beachfront soon enough. You're basically just an early gentrifier of the new trendy beachfront neighborhood 1-2 decades from now.

That's mostly because Florida is stuffed to the brim with scammers. It is run by scammers, for scammers.

Florida has a law that says that if you sue the insurance company and win they pay your legal fees, but if you sue and lose you don't pay the insurance company's costs. It also has a law which allows owners to delegate the right to file a claim to the contractor doing the work.

So a sketchy rear end roofer can go about pressuring/tricking homeowners into signing over the right to file a claim with the promise of "a free new roof!" They then file the claim for a full replacement at a rather uncompetitive price, often damaging the roof themselves to fake storm damage. When the insurance company pushes back the roofer has a law firm scammer buddy that starts the process of during the insurance company. The insurance company knows that there is a real risk that they will lose the lawsuit because people think big insurance companies are evil money hoarders who don't pay out when they should and also knows that if that happens they will also end up paying for exorbitantly inflated legal fees run up by the lawyer who is in on the scam. So the insurance company pays out the claim and raises rates next year to keep their loss ratio consistent.

If this were an isolated scenario that would be one thing, but with background level of scammers in the state and regular storms providing cover stories for the fake damage the Florida roofing industry is now essentially made up entirely of those shady people who show up after a hailstorm. Florida is responsible for something like 80% of all insurance lawsuits nationwide.

The result is insurance in Florida is now priced with the assumption that every house will have its roof replaced within the next few years at a non-competitive price.

My dad got a rare brain tumor which is separate from the metastatic secondary/primary unknown cancer that is currently killing him. How many people get two completely different cancers in seven years? I know my mom blames, and I've suspected, that it has to do with the superfund site of a swamp down there. Cancer does not run in my family. I don't think this single case is probative, of course, but I'll go to my grave believing that it was the environmental pollutants that caused my dad's cancers.

The Supreme Court was already the most crooked poo poo - based on no actual harms that had happened.

What is always irritating is, as I often bring up, people will both act like you're elitist if you won't move out of the big cities in Texas and shrug this stuff off with "well why would you want service from someone who doesn't want to serve you?" for stuff that isn't always optional. There's a more likely chance that this judge won't get anywhere because they're operating in a governmental capacity, but I don't really trust the Texas Supreme Court either.

The correct take from SCOTX would be to say "You have a choice - either resign your position or officiate weddings of same sex couples."

I have a feeling that's not what we'll get.

I'm a smol land owner - I have no incentive to ever sell because my mortgage interest rate is 3.25%. The market can crash or my $180k house can stay valued at around $350k forever - it makes no difference to me.

Property tax "relief" means I can vaguely think about getting a shed or pooling money with some buddies to get a cabin outside Fort Davis or something... eventually.
