Man, I think I'm finally going to finish Gundam Zeta after legit years of watching it. Now what to watch next.

I've watched every mainline Gundam show since SEED, all the films/OVAs since including IGLOO. And also 08th MS Team but barely remember a thing about it. Natural choice would probably be ZZ and Char's counterattack but I feel I should watch the original Gundam before those if I go that way. Zeta has been a bit of a drag honestly not least to being kinda dated, but kinda cozy to watch.

SEED and Destiny I loved for the melodrama, I was fittingly a teenager when they came out and I watched them after NGE which was my first anime so they kinda fit. On the other hand I loved 08th MS Team for the realistic take for a Gundam show. I'm thinking 0080 and 0083? I'm planning to watch the Seed remasters at some point before the film comes out. I picked Zeta due to how it was being ranked in lists.

On the other hand it feels kinda weird having seen all these OVAs and films and what-not with the colony drop being referred to and not actually having seen the original material.

Also not looking forward to Char probably being a mustache twirling villain in the other shows. (I know there's a lot of discussion/history these threads have had around his portrayals and differences between the shows/films but Zeta was definitely not what I was expecting).

edit:
It's been so long since I saw Unicorn and 00 that I can't attest to them being good or bad shows but I was definitely gripped/entertained throughout, and I've somehow managed to similarly memory hole them

After I finished Zeta I jumped into Chars Counter Attack as I couldn't get into ZZ and just read a synopsis and now I'm watching Unicorn for the first time and it's cool so far

I think this is exactly my order of watch, too. It worked out well enough for me.

The original material barely covers this, anyway. I was always frustrated with how fascinating the "One Week Battle" sounded but then the story starts long after all this flurry of big, chaotic activity. The beginning of the war between Zeon and the Federation absolutely sounded like the most interesting part and we see basically none of it.

Maybe it's in The Origin? I dunno. That ain't the original material, anyway. Took many decades of exploring the UC to get there.

Just watch The Origon if you want the first month of the war. Then, if you feel you must, slog through Igloo or just look up some video game cutscenes to cover the war through to September 0079 when the show starts.

It doesn't help that most people who imagine the One Week Battle view it as an uninhibited slugfest between two nuclear powers where multiple entire Sides of 40+ colony cylinders were wiped out in the crossfire between them as they desperately tried to take out the other at any cost, and basically no-one at Sunrise has ever been interested in portraying it that way; not even Tomino. Who always described the destruction of the Sides as being due to unilateral attacks by Zeon, and an outright and deliberate slaughter. About the only clear and unambiguous account of the Federation using nuclear weapons in the entire One Year War is to try to destroy Isle Iffish while Zeon escorted it to Earth, when everyone aboard was already dead anyway.

I know Tomino made Char’s Counterattack to be a stand-alone and to make sense to people who hadn’t seen any Gundam before, but CCA won’t have the same impact if you haven’t seen First Gundam. First Gundam rules, as well.

I think I mentioned before but I went to a theatrical showing of CCA with someone who had never seen Gundam, and all I really needed to get him up to speed was "Newtypes kind of have force powers" and he was good. From just CCA he got that Char was a dude with history with Amuro and that he was a morally dubious liar.

Did he get absolutely everything out of the movie? Almost certainly not, but he certainly got enough to follow the story and vibe with it so I'd say it does work somewhat as a standalone.

Zeta episode 45: Actually a decent space battle since there's some sense of space/spatial awareness and different theaters of the battle with the impending collision on the background. Feels like it would make a great space sim mission or series of missions à la Freespace 2.

Wonder if there's actually been any decent story driven Gundam games. Everything I've seen have either been goofy or some multiplayer games with low production values.

46: Newtype stuff going out like candy out of nowhere like bunch of people have superpowers. Recoa's entire arc in the series is kinda....troubling by modern sensibilities. No idea if it's a bad take but I think Haman may be my favourite character on the show? Maybe she's scheming, evil, I have no idea what's her end goal, motivations and if she's reliable even as a temporary ally but her character seems consistent and logical and not....completely mustache twirling evil, even if I think she'll definitely be up to some absolutely horrible poo poo (I think she suggested nuking the entire surface of the Earth or something earlier if things end up that way?).

a lot of the super robot wars games have pretty good story and feature gundam pretty heavily. that said they are still crossovers.

blue destiny's a trilogy of dreamcast games with pretty alright stories. they're written by the same guy who'd go on to write the astray manga, which are generally decently well regarded. blue destiny got adapted into a manga itself if you wanna check it out, since i dont think the games got translated. might be wrong though.

I really like how the execution of the whole episode where Reccoa turns evil, the pull of Scirroco feels sinister and horrifying in a way little else in the show does. I just wish it was for a character turn that wasn’t just “bitches be crazy!”

Blue Destiny was for Saturn, but it did get a sequel for Dreamcast that's pretty good, if short. It's called "Rise from the Ashes", and is one of the gruntiest Gundam games of all time. No Gundam (except an optional friendly duel against Amuro on the Japan only bonus disc), no Newtype stuff, no one-off superprototype ace machines. Just a team of GMs, a hovertruck, and a continent's worth of Zekes.

Blue Destiny got adapted into a manga twice, too. A short one when the game came out, and a longer one more recently that might still be ongoing.

Speaking of IBO, Urdr Hunt just updated recently.

The main takeaway from this episode:

Amida Arca is still an absolute monster in combat. Seriously, she just about makes ace all over again in less than a minute. And she's still taking the time to casually say hello to the pilots she's bailing out and to mock the people she's killing.
