Is this why Twitter exclusively advertises creepy big titty anime AI companions to me? I am only interested in part of that concept, and it's not the creepy bits!!

happyhippy posted:I think that was in Private Eye. That's for the A-level results. If you went by newspaper photos, in earlier times, only slim, white girls with wide child-bearing hips and long straight hair pass A-levels. Boys and large girls with more "rubinesque" figures or with a 'funny tinge' don't pass A-levels. I think it's changed a bit in the past few years. Also in marketing using totty photos: Several billion moons ago I did a unit at uni on marketing. The research at the time showed that you could use 'beautiful women' to market to both male & female potential customers because it was perceived differently. Apparently men were attracted by the woman as someone they might want to 'befriend' while women would imagine themselves to BE the alluring woman in the photo. In the 80s one of the women's magazines (Honey) experimented with using natural models instead of slim beautiful models and sales plunged. Again, things seem to have changed a little in the last few years. I find myself wondering how the change came about, what has been done differently? One of the unfortunate things is hate-clicking. You see something that causes revulsion that you're absolutely going to forward to your ingroup to prove that society is a cesspit full of "halal cats for eating" or whatever and engage with it, and the algorithm clocks that engagement and then people get an entire feed full of similar bullshit.

Private Eye sounds right. I'm sure there was a front cover to go with this, maybe I just wanted there to be

Yeah the moment you mentioned an onion-or-similar article I remembered "fruity girls" because it's the kind of phrase you would only associate with perverts at the Mail or Sun.

The handpicked cunts that Elon is paying for tweets only get it based on the number of *other blue ticks* that look at their tweets and replies, so those of us who aren't stupid enough to have done that don't need to worry about it. You're right about hate engagement though.

This is one of the dumbest things I’ve read in a long time, and I read a lot of incredibly dumb poo poo I mean, it's phrased weirdly, but "don't go to spain cos you'll die of heatstroke and you can get the weather you used to ask for in the UK instead" does seem like it would be, in practice, good green policy, as you're cutting down on air travel. Honestly if I was drafting better labour legislation I would include a right to short notice holidays so people can bunk off when it's a nice day during summer. We do get them, it's just they're unpredictable.

In other UK news. Rishi Sunak criticises EU after it signs deal using Falklands’ Argentine name https://jrnl.ie/6123873 I think the best comment on this was from the EU. quote:An EU official told the Financial Times: “The UK is not part of the EU. They are upset by the use of the word Malvinas. If they were in the EU perhaps they would have pushed back against it.” Dang, actions have consequences. Whom knew?

The BBC or whatever site isn't necessarily building up that personalised a profile for you. It might not be "this perv always clicks on the A level results stories with teen girls in the main photo", it might just be "our profile shows that this user is a British male aged 18-35" and assumes the rest.

The only place the algorithm has any chance to hawk me stuff is on youtube on my phone and it mostly offers domino's pizza, which I never eat, and period products, which I have no use for. Nice to know they think I'm a dominos eating AFAB.

One thing I found with that old unit is that modern D cells are far too good at being batteries for the kind of potash slop torch batteries it was designed to be fitted with, so I ended up running it off of AAs inside of big plastic fake D cell holders. I think that also means that in the aftermath of an actual nuclear event you could run it off of 4x potatoes.

I think I have an old mining lamp from one of my distant relatives somewhere, it's basically the front off a small torch with half a car battery slung under it. Unfortunately it also turned into an unidentifiable mess of corrosion over time.
