Not sure who that was but it’s a cool story Nazzadan posted:New stuff Friday: Quick turnaround for new Voivod, I liked synchro anarchy a lot. are there any metal bands that are just super serious and not ironic at all, or is the entire genre self aware of its inherent silliness like goths?

And that's barely an exaggeration. There was a French black metal collective that essentially only released tapes amongst themselves. I love black metal, but some folks take it entirely too seriously

back when metal was mainstream and it and rock weren't deader than dead you'd for sure get earnest scumbags, junkies, jock-ish dudes, and in some cases normal dudes making metal. it's all beardos now though i mean these guys were probably not beardos (or whatever term you'd use back then). their modern equivalents definitely are though.

Less Claypool posted:Or the frontman from Venom who claims to have started Black Metal even though they are not a black metal band. Cronos yeah. He deserves credit for the name black metal because Venom did come up with that but his whining about what the genre became after them is real dumb. He should be proud to have been part of the first wave of the genre but he's just salty about the early 90's Norwegian scene and (I'm guessing here) how it reflected on him as I'm sure metal magazines at the time asked him about it. Also I think he bitched about Bathory ripping off Venom which.....a case could be made for some early Bathory tracks having a definite Venom influence but that's like...a couple songs spread across the first three records, and by Blood Fire Death, Bathory was forging it's own musical path. Grandpa Cronos needs to stfu.

There's a bunch of prog metal guys who are really just into "music", Paul Masvidal from Cynic comes to mind on that front Also Iced Earth come to mind as a super serious band, a surprising amount of power metal people take things deadly serious. That might be more of a fan thing tho
