i don’t remember who it was but there was 2 one-man bedroom black metal solo projects with the same name that then collaborated to release new material under the same name

You’re probably talking about Mare Cognitum and Spectral Lore

Edit oh nvm, I see what you mean, the original artists shared a name. Not sure who that was but it’s a cool story

The Zenith Passage, tech death
Somnuri, sludge
Coffin Nail / Maltheist split, deathgrind

Ageless Summoning, dm
Gateway, death doom
Disimperium, war
Bloodletter, thrash
Cultist on non-BC, beatdown dxc

Quick turnaround for new Voivod, I liked synchro anarchy a lot. Interested in the Mizmor record because I had t been a big fan but the collaboration album with Thou was great

are there any metal bands that are just super serious and not ironic at all, or is the entire genre self aware of its inherent silliness like goths?

Black metal has by far the most self-serious bands and fans and is also the most objectively silly.

Ah yes, so underground you don't even release music.

And that's barely an exaggeration. There was a French black metal collective that essentially only released tapes amongst themselves.

I love black metal, but some folks take it entirely too seriously

Death metal had ANUS. Every community has their morons like this. But most musicians recognize at least some level of camp present in all of it.

back when metal was mainstream and it and rock weren't deader than dead you'd for sure get earnest scumbags, junkies, jock-ish dudes, and in some cases normal dudes making metal. it's all beardos now though

i mean these guys were probably not beardos (or whatever term you'd use back then). their modern equivalents definitely are though.

Cronos yeah. He deserves credit for the name black metal because Venom did come up with that but his whining about what the genre became after them is real dumb.

He should be proud to have been part of the first wave of the genre but he's just salty about the early 90's Norwegian scene and (I'm guessing here) how it reflected on him as I'm sure metal magazines at the time asked him about it.

Also I think he bitched about Bathory ripping off Venom which.....a case could be made for some early Bathory tracks having a definite Venom influence but that's like...a couple songs spread across the first three records, and by Blood Fire Death, Bathory was forging it's own musical path.

Grandpa Cronos needs to stfu.
