Hah, that’s basically what I was talking about here:

It wasn’t even someone in the food court yelling, it was someone on his break in line with the rest of us, and the folks that moved to the second line gave him the dirtiest looks in the world when the food court cashier proceeded to ignore them.

I didn’t know it was some corporate edict - sorry you have to enforce that. If they want two lanes, they should be installing queue stanchions (that aren’t wide enough for carts :colbert:) or something, not relying on paint on the floor and yelling.

Yes we have all brought up lines on the floor or signage directing our members to the appropriate lines but our GM has decided that she hates signs and will not let us put any up. I keep telling members to please drop a suggestion about it in the box because they’ll listen to members but not employees.

Speaking of poo poo GMs and warehouses, pretty sure I got the department in trouble tonight by revealing that we are so over worked and so under staffed that we go without our last breaks more often than not. I have brought this up several times over the past year but I think everyone forgets and then get all pissed off again when I remind them that actually no the problems are still there and didn’t magically go away.

Anyway I think I get why they have to force new people into food court. Why make conditions better when you can have fresh meat that has no choice but to work there? Hm? A revolving door you say?? That doesn’t make sense why would people want to leave food court?

Edit so that my post isn’t only me bitching about my job: today I got to watch a guy get escorted out of the warehouse while he yelled stuff like “this is America!” And “can you believe they’re kicking me out??” It was actually really great and I could feel my spirits being lifted.

In a lot of states companies can get in big trouble for that, so you're really doing them a favor. If BOLI or whoever start investigating the fines and repayment can jump pretty fast as I recall.

I can't imagine working in the food court and not being miserable. There's way too much bullshit to deal with, especially considering they get paid the same rate as someone who collect carts outside all day. Employees in the deli get the same pay as cashiers which is like an extra dollar an hour or something. How the hell is that fair?

Was served by a tire center guy working the food court, once. Was wearing the tire center uniform but not dirty, hairnet and gloves. I guess he got reallocated before he could get started fpr the day. I got the distinct impression that he couldn't give a poo poo, possibly because he was going to get paid at his higher tire center rate for serving up food while not having to physically exert himself as much.

Food court is a loving nightmare. I get yelled at by people constantly for things beyond my control and if I stop smiling or get frustrated my supervisor is quick to reprimand me and will say in my reviews that I’m too emotional and I need to stop letting members get to me. I guess she’s made of steel because I don’t know a single person who doesn’t have their mood changed when some entitled prick gets in your face and screams at you because they’re too loving stupid to figure out how the spoon dispenser works.

They also close the warehouse at 8:30 and push all the members out of the aisles but they push them into food court where they order pizzas and we continue to serve pizzas for a full 30 minutes, sometimes 40 minutes after close. Management doesn’t want us to start cleaning until all the members are gone so we are consistently 30-40 minutes behind schedule every night hence why we don’t have time to take our breaks, we don’t have time to do this this or this. Stop serving members after close? Absolutely not! Just work faster! By the way we are replacing two of your closers with brand new hires so have fun doing all that and also training half your team.

We are constantly pulling people from other departments to help us in FC. On a fully staffed day. Even with every single person scheduled present, it’s still not enough for the volume of people but hmmm idk maybe food court just needs to get their poo poo together, it couldn’t possibly be a staffing issue.

Also can other employees weigh in on this? We had a brand new hire get a full time position in food court, and he is now moving to forklifts full time before his 90 days are up. He skipped over people who had been on food court for years, and he just skipped over people who have been driving forklifts at Costco for years. As far as I know he doesn’t know anyone here, so what the hell? How is this possible?

Hey food court is actually getting their breaks now and it only took me getting pulled into the office, told that I’m inconveniencing everyone because I’m a baby who can’t take my own breaks, being poo poo on for being a negative person (I said food court is a nightmare and got read the riot act, how come you never say anything nice about food court?) and having my supervisor throw me under the bus. But hey!!!! We can actually get our ducking breaks covered :wow:

Please be nice to us in food court, we are dealing with a lot :(

It's most likely that that person is very good at rear end kissing and played the game right. But to give you a possible alternative explanation, I have seen situations a few times where someone who has worked at Costco for a long time quits, and then decides to come back a few years later and gets slapped with a new hire date. So even though they technically have only been employed by Costco for a very short time, they could actually have years of experience with the company and are able to use that experience in different areas without much issue.

Hate on the guy all you want for somehow moving up quickly in a way that's unfair to others, but you can be happy knowing that he's probably going from one poo poo show to another. Unless your warehouse happens to be a rare one that has figured out how to deal with the logistical nightmare that is Costco freight. At my warehouse, we have a hard time finding people willing to cross train to drive a forklift because everyone sees how miserable all the forklift drivers are and want nothing to do with that.

I'm pretty sure they still treat their employees better than most retailers. But it is still retail, and the quality of leadership and corporate policies have been slowly declining since the company founder retired.

The whole thing about the food court going to poo poo is that the company is trying literally every possible thing they can to get the food court to operate as anything other than a huge loss while still keeping the hot dog at $1.50. Which is why they raise prices on the other items on the menu and keep trying to introduce new items hoping for a success. Jim Sinegal may have stepped down from CEO, but he's still on the board of directors. I'm sure they'll raise the price of the loving hot dog eventually, but Jim will never allow it, and they wouldn't dare trying it while he's still alive. Dude is in his 80s though and can't live forever. I assume the rest of the corporate higher ups are just waiting for Jim to croak so they can finally maximize profits. If you're interested in buying Costco stock, I would bet the price will take a good dip upon the news of Jim's death.

Service deli at my warehouse is in constant staff crisis too, but it's because our dept manager is inept and rotisserie room loving sucks so it's impossible to retain new hires if they touch that side of the department. Nobody on the cold prep side knows a thing about rotisserie and doesn't care to learn because it's hot, dirty, and way more strenuous than slapping sandwiches together for the same pay, and the manager and supervisor can barely operate the ovens. I can't even think about a break until the closer shows up at the end of my shift and sometimes not even then. When it's busy busy I've had to work through my lunch because god forbid you sell out of chickens for any reason.

holy shiiiiiit working through your lunch?? thats absolutely unheard of at mine, we will get written up if we go even one minute over our scheduled lunch time. i thought this was a costco wide thing but now im thinking it might actually be a california labour thing. drat dude that really sucks :sigh: i have heard that the chicken room is definitely one of the toughest places to be in, though i do know at least one person who claims to have enjoyed it. that said, they arent doing chicken room anymore and have no intention of ever doing so again

apparently they haven't tried everything cause everything just keeps dropping in quality. imo costco's main thing is the focus on value, not on cost. you can generally trust whatever they carry to be at least not trash, and while things cost more than at other stores you get more for it.

so, to bring this to the food court, just charge more for stuff but make it good. i don't care if the combo slice costs $3.99 instead of $1.99, if it's got all the stuff i want on it and is at least a half-decent slice of pizza. ill pay more for a polish than a 'dog cause they taste better, although the new dogs are better than the old ones.

whomever compared it to sams club a little bit ago was onto something. trying to hit a bottom-dollar price point at any cost is a walmart move. costco should be focused on giving me the best bang for my buck, and it seems like they've lost this focus in the last few years.

I love Rojo's Street Corn Dip and have patented a device that will affix (permanently) to your skull and dispense Rojo's Street Corn Dip into your mouth either constantly or on demand. Kind of like those hats that you put beer in and suck through a straw. But manual suction is obviously not sufficient due to Rojo's Street Corn Dip's increased viscosity and chunkiness, so it will require an electric pump of some sort. PM me if you have an engineering background and would like to be involved with this endeavor.

Food Court is the receipent of undue stress from the auto kiosks because large percentages of the patrons are Olds whom cannot follow simple instructions to save their lives.

Generally there's two types of positions for basic employees at Costco. Incredibly brain dead easy but also mind numbingly boring; Cashiers, Assistants, Cart Pushers, Merch. And incredibly fast paced and intense but poorly run and utterly incomprehensible to management positions; Food Court, Deli, Bakery, basically all the auxiliary depts.
