The feelings underlying the horrible poo poo freepers say have always been there, they've just realized in recent years that they can finally get specific, and as long as they don't say certain words, they're not gonna get punished for it. Like, sure, they use more direct language now, but even a decade ago they were positively quoting The Turner Diaries and yearning for the days where "those people" would be dragged out of town behind a truck. The Trump years didn't radicalize them, but they sure as poo poo felt like they got permission to say what they're actually thinking, and anyone who had any bit of decorum either got scared away or swept up in it.

She originally claimed that he had grabbed her, made sexual comments, and seemed threatening. Edit: Actually, according to this NYT article, the claim came from a Professor who was interviewing her. He claims that she told him that during the trial she tried to "make Emmett’s conduct sound more threatening than it actually was." He sent the tape to the FBI and the FBI opened a case, but they said the comments on the tape he provided couldn't be considered a recantation. She also had an unpublished memoir before she died where she sticks to her original story, so she never did actually recant it before she died. The Professor claimed she did and that was the story for a while, but "I tried to make it sound as bad as possible in the witness stand at trial" wasn't actually a recantation and she still said it went down mostly as she originally claimed in her book. His friends may have dared him to do it, but they aren't sure why exactly he did.
