I finish it up with the HIV outbreak in Indiana that occurred after Pence killed a clean needle program when he was governor, and how his own party begged him to restore the program and the estimated ~200+ deaths the decision caused. I conclude with mentioning Pence was put in charge of covid response and we go into covid in the next lecture.

Gonna get fired for that one one day I suppose but gently caress them if they think I'll stop teaching it.

I don't get into a timeline of covid response stuff yet, probably wont for a few years if I am still teaching then but I am 100% going to mention how MA was being impacted heavily by covid and had federal allocation of PPE removed and given to FL who did not have near the level of covid cases and that it was at direct orders from the WH / Kushner. Then I get to tell the fun anecdote about the Patriots owner flying a private jet to China to get PPE for the state of MA. Being in New England I think the students will respond to that a bit.

Looks like the Enlisted Biden's plea deal fell apart in court a few minutes ago when the judge didn't like the potential deal or some weird poo poo. Yesterday, Republicans sent some weird friend-of-court brief to the judge with the standard talking point poo poo. Apparently, Enlisted Biden's lawyers then tried to gently caress with the court, calling the court pretending to be a GOP person and say "oops, didn't mean to file that". The fall-apart appears to be because the defense thought this ends future prosecutions, DOJ didn't, and the judge went "uh, this doesn't make sense wtf".

It seems like a weirdo clusterfuck, so expect All Hunter All The Time going forward again.

Edit: unless they work it out or something

Currently in a medium sized city in a 55% red state and it sucks. Blue towns only have so much autonomy when the state does things like ban abortion and cut school funding.

A friend of mine is a PhD historian and is one of the top 10 scholars in his specialty - which is so narrow that he can only realistically do research and teach in East Texas, because that's where the records and other materials from the antebellum statehood period are found and nobody wants to hire a Texas history professor in New Jersey.

He's basically trapped and he hates it. Poor bastard.

When I was stationed in Korea, they were tying a lot of the Seoul COVID flare ups to gay bars/clubs. Despite Korea's robust case tracking, it fell apart when people really didn't want anybody else to know they were there. They might be able to track the patient to the establishment, but good luck notifying other people who were there at the same time when the sign in sheet was all fake names.

My closest professional friend of 20 years now is also stuck in a big school in Dallas due to a bunch of family stuff. Oh yeah Texas just overturned local progressive laws allowing construction workers to have water and breaks.

A relative in the Air Force mentioned in the 1970s a Black officer from Alabama was going to be transferred to a base there, and objected vehemently as a big reason he joined was to not live in Alabama anymore, but was successful in getting sent elsewhere.

The water break/heat safety thing was really surprising to me.

When they did whatever to make it so water/cooling breaks were not mandated by the state, I assumed that OSHA had some kind of guidelines regarding work/rest cycles in extreme heat. They kind of have regulations for meal breaks, max hours worked, and all sorts of other stuff.

You would think that since summer=hot, and hot weather can kill, that something would have already been on the books.

Yeah, OSHA only requires that potable water is made available and permit employees to drink it.

Yeah, the problem with "fleeing red states where things are getting worse" is largely that the red states still have unreasonable levels of power and influence on everything else thanks to poo poo like the House, esp. the Senate.

It's kind of like living with a horrid sibling that spews diarrhea everywhere; even if you take care of yourself and your parts of the house you're still living with someone whose apparent job is making life lovely for everyone, and boy fuckin howdy are they intent on following through with that.

I know a teacher who just finished leaving TX for CA because of poo poo like this and I hope it works out for them. The anti-learning poo poo in this country is insane, but not unexpected.
