Only the most calculated of our starving children will have the skills wallets to scavenge for food, chess will help them with that

At best you have free meals for the poorest of schoolchildren and food banks, which are funded and run on volunteer basis but despite that you still need a referral for them from social services and can use them only 3 times a month IIRC.

A waiter, again unbidden, brought the chessboard and the current issue of 'The Times',
with the page turned down at the chess problem. Then, seeing that Winston's
glass was empty, he brought the gin bottle and filled it. There was no
need to give orders. They knew his habits. The chessboard was always
waiting for him, his corner table was always reserved; even when the place
was full he had it to himself, since nobody cared to be seen sitting too
close to him. He never even bothered to count his drinks.

11 years at the top the last 533 years. The other large Western/Central European powers seem to have been far more into the game, before it became part of the Cold War competition and the Russians dominated for half a century. (With a small hiccup)

Really, if any Commonwealth country has a claim to chess, it'd probably be India, since it has least India has produced a champion in the 21st century. On the other hand, the last British champion was in 1886, so perhaps chess is a necessary part of restoring Britain's imperial glory.

Holy poo poo those numbers on Just Stop Oil. I thought there would be a bit more middle class kayfabe of "well their hearts are in the right place but their methods are misguided" but it's straight up almost half of respondents saying they're a force for bad.

To be fair given the recent news around increased oil production you can’t say that their methods have been successful. Other than the usual method of creating a think tank and giving MPs large consultant fees which is how things seem to work there is not much really they can do.

We get waves if this in the US, too. People decide that they can cargo cult their way to excellence by forcing the kids to do "smart people stuff" instead of expensive things like hiring teachers or building schools.

The whole "We can't afford to feed kids and it's wrong to anyway" doesn't even work in terms of an appeal to selfishness. At any one time, there's a cohort of pensioners, a cohort of working age people and a cohort of children. In time, the current working age group becomes the pensioners and the children move up to being wage earners. That being the case, it is absolutely, 100% in the direct personal interest of every adult that the next generation of children is as happy and healthy and well-fed and well-educated as possible, 'cos these are the people who in due course will be paying your pensions and providing your old age services. Giving them deprived, lovely childhoods isn't just spiteful behaviour, it is directly harming your own future prospects and quality of life in later years.

And thusly I demonstrate that this attitude is the most British thing possible.
