The most recent Lions Led by Donkeys episode was on the Korean axe murder incident - an attempt by American troops in the DMZ to cut down a tree that was blocking the view from an observation post, that ended with two American officers being murdered by North Korean soldiers with axes. The 'fun' fact involving the incident comes from the name of one of the two officers, captain Bonifas. Bonifas is the Anglicised version of the name Bonifatius, an eighth century Anglo-Saxon missionary who spent most of his life converting Pagan Germanic tribes in what's modern day Frisia, in the north of The Netherlands/Germany. And one of the things he's most known for is chopping down a tree that was sacred to the local Donar cult around 723. Unlike captain Bonifas he survived this, not martyred until circa 754.

side note: i did try a ~30 year old cabernet one time, some friends and i were renting a house from some wine guy & he hadnt cleaned out the cellar. so one time we were having a party & idk 4am were scrounging around and found a bottle with my actual birth year on it so we figured why not it was basically bland vinegar and grounds (as in coffee grounds? idk another word)

It was sediment, which forms for a variety of reasons, but in very old wines the tannins bind to some of the pigments and fall out of solution as sediment. Old wines get decanted in part to remove the sediment. Also, some wines can age for decades beautifully, but most can't, and even those that can need to be stored properly the whole time. Always better to get a bottle from a nice restaurant or a reputable wine shop than some old guy's basement.

ah yeah sediment! i do think he was a real connoisseur (wine clubs, yearly trips to france), but i think that bottle just got left behind in the back when he moved out or something, or maybe he kept it as a souvenir from his first wine trip idk that would fit with his age. also it was a decent cellar, well insulated, no humidity (until we broke the kitchen sink and & flooded the whole thing) but anyway that one had not aged well at all. we did pour it gently to avoid the sediment but even then it was just very, well, bland. my best description is the danish "fad" (flat a soft ð)

Meaning he rejected the higher security measures. It was disclosed after his death (from natural causes, guy lived to be 85) that there had been at least one serious attempt at shooting him during his first term, but the assassin missed. Of course in Finnish history the more significant and actually successful political assassination was that of Imperial Russia's governor-general of Finland Nikolai Bobrikov in 1904. He was neutral, for his time, on race. He didn’t argue for racial oppression or racial liberation. If his programs helped black people, that was largely by accident

Personally if the cost of government that isn't actively racist and constantly working against the interest of the working class is a bit of authoritarianism I'd take that over any ineffective but freely elected democracy. Which in my experience are usually racist and working against the working class if only by inaction.
