I've been a "tier 1 service desk worker" (I'm a receptionist for 3 community colleges that resets passwords and helps answer obvious; very loving stupid, questions that could be answered if one would explore website, and read) for 2 years and I'm just. Drained lol. I can barely maintain the "happy to be here\help callers & communicate with coworkers!" persona anymore. They stick our specific # loving everywhere like "hey call for general info!" Get calls about,,,,, things I've literally never heard of nor been trained on. Oh shoot all my coworkers are on calls; Shoot 5 different departments I called for help didn't answer. Oh shoot, my supervisor answers in a gruff, annoyed voice solutions that I've already tried and didn't work. Meanwhile I'm loving the hell out of a part-time weekend dishwashing gig and all the crew there. Giving serious thought to just going full time there. sorry for the venty, whiney post lol; I can't even fake this poo poo today.

Gaylor Moon posted:Got quite a bit impatient on a call earlier and when the caller asked my name I replied with "Steve" (My name, is not in fact Steve) My very first ever real job, when I was, like, 16, was at this research institute attached to a university. My boss's phone extension was what you got if you failed to dial 9 before dailing a common local phone prefix, so he got a ton of wrong numbers, typically from the hospital. He'd tell them to hang up and dial 9 first, and they'd thank him, and that would be that. One time, he got this person calling him over and over, asking for Mary. Each time, they insisted he was who they were actually trying to call, and they wouldn't listen to the very simple instructions to dial 9 first. He got so frustrated by the third angry call that he said "you were right, Mary's right here, but she's busy giving me head" and hung up. So, you know. There's still a lot of space left for escalation, Steve. |

I'm not familiar with this so like, going off if how it sounds, so is it that workers have to essentially "fight" for specific, 'valuable, high-income' shifts?

I've got a hot tip for all you interns out there! If your summer gig is paying for you to go on a work trip, don't show up drunk! And also, don't vanish from the conference at 10am after falling asleep on the table, and then fail to answer your phone when people start calling to make sure you're alive! |

In other news, I have to fire an intern tomorrow. |

I dunno, that's pretty standard for conferences depending on your industry. Last one I went to had an open bar every night and only half the seats were filled in the mornings. |

how poorly was this intern paid tho? not trying to justify LARPing Harrier Du Bois at a work conference but internships just seem dumb as hell, especially if you're expected to do it without compensation besides "experience" |

Whether or not it counts as "paid well" is up for debate, I suppose. But uncle sam is very transparent about what the pay structure is before you accept the job, and I personally bend over backwards to ensure no intern ever works a minute over the 40 hours a week they agreed to work in their contract, is given proper credit for their science contributions, and gets at least weekly well-being checks as they navigate the sometimes scary world of being an independent adult for possibly the first time. In addition, there are 91 other interns here who showed up sober and payed attention to the classes we taught. cruft fucked around with this message at 00:39 on Aug 9, 2023 |
