With all the fan and BG3 chat going on I thought I’d ask how difficult the fan replacement is.

For reference I’ve done the joycon stick swap and used to do other fixes but that was so long ago I’ve forgotten so I’m not a complete beginner but I’m out of practice.

This delta fan is just ruining the atmosphere of the dang game!

If it’s delta, you can improve things a lot by swapping it out. There’s an ifixit kit for that

Nah, the delta fan is supposedly a bit louder than the other fan but the difference is pretty tiny. AFAIK there's no evidence to suggest that there's a significant difference or that it's worth replacing the fan unless you just happen to have the right ears to where you hear that specific frequency better.

Edit: I forget the video but it was posted way back in the thread. Some sound people did a test and found there was minimal difference that could be attributed to error in the setup rather than the different fans.

VVV Pretty much this yea VVV

Specifically, it's got a bit more of a higher pitched whine. The other fan is still noticeably loud at full blast. It's not a hard replacement but idk how much it's actually worth it outside of like laboratory conditions.

I think I have the right/wrong ears unfortunately. I wish I had another real life steam deck around to compare with but man it’s just the worst.

I can hear coil whine and cat scarers and bats and all that sort of thing too.

Extra annoyingly I had Bg3 running at 11w tdp earlier and it was making slightly less noise but I can’t find the right combo of settings that made that happen anymore. Back to full whine.

Any advice on installing nexus mods on the deck. I got BG3 and was hoping to browse mods for it. I know certain games are easier for installation/running than others.

I was wondering if the file transfer tool would include mod files as well?

I think I might prefer controller. Anyway, even if your using a keyboard BG3 will pull up the virtual keyboard whenever you go to type, pretty annoying.

I swapped for a quiet fan and it was totally worth it. The high pitched whine was definitely noticeable when the fans kicked in. It's not the biggest deal, but with the quieter having the speakers loud enough drowns out the fan noise but with the higher pitched fan it was definitely noticable.

How does one turn off the automatic off-hand attacks on Baldur's Gate 3?

Unequip the offhand weapon? If you're not gonna attack with it there's no reason to have it right?

But it might be a toggle in the "spellbook" - non-casters have their toggleable features in there, like Karlach's Great Weapon Mastery or whatever that lets her take a penalty to attack for a bonus to damage.

For me it was Elden ring. It’s impressive that the deck can run it but the frame rate is not stable at all and locking it to 30 adds a poo poo ton of input lag. All this in additional to the text being barely readable due to its size. And of course the black bars because 16:10 is not supported.

And yet so many people seem to love it on the deck and even recommend it to others whereas I feel like there are lots of other games better suited for the deck.

Since mid-March, when I bought GTAV, I've played almost every night, and have almost 700 hours into it. The online (with friends) is absolutely perfect and I am not the least bit surprised that it's up there.

Runs great on the Deck, too.

Honestly this seems to be the experience with every PvP online game and is a large part of why I almost exclusively play single-player games, most of the few exceptions being like when some of my friends tried to get me into Monster Hunter and I played exclusively with them.

Anyone playing BG3: is there a way to lower the resolution? For me it is locked at native (or 1080p if i change thr aspect ratio). I wanted to try knocking the resolutiin back to see if the decks fsr is better than Larians. I have managed to get the battery to about 2.5 hours with power draw capped at 9- anyone managed to get any better?

Really my biggest issue with BG3 is the poor FSR and if that somehow gets fixed up it'll be great. I tried out the default Dark Urge background character, and the dragonborn details look pretty bad at a distance when outlined.

I don't think it's a new vs. old thing, seems completely random. I swapped mine out when I upgraded to a 2tb drive because I heard such good things, the prior fan hadn't really annoyed me and while the new fan still does get a bit loud I think it's a bit of an improvement so I don't regret doing the thing. You can check my recent posts ITT about the process, but generally it wasn't too difficult.

It's fun to see how folks mileage varies and where they draw their own lines on performance.

I think it's absolutely wild that a handheld device can run Cyberpunk and Red Dead Redemption 2 in a totally playable fashion.

But at 30-40fps with the fans going wild? Not for me. That type of stuff just pushes my personal tolerance of what's a good experience. This years Dead Space remake was a good example. It's Verified on the store and regularly mentioned as a good experience on Deck, but I could never get it to a state where I was happy with the performance and it made the Deck run really hot and loud. That stuff is just about disruptive enough to impede my enjoyment of a game.

My tastes lean more old school anyway so it's a fairly moot point for me. My biggest joy with the Deck has been running a lot of classic PC games from the 90's and early 2000's on handheld hardware, which will never fail to impress me. Running modern AAA games on the Deck is one of those curiosities that I think is objectively really cool to see happening, but that's not my use case for the machine.

I only play in private sessions with my friends  we deal with 0 griefers and don't grief anyone.

There has been so much content added to online that it's turned into a pretty great experience. There is an insane amount of content.

- casino heist
- cayo perico tropical island heist
- doomsday heist (my favourite)
- dr dre set of missions
- 5 smaller apartment heists
- something like 50+ races
- 50+ smaller jobs
- company jobs
- motorcycle club jobs

Plus, my friends and I decide on a 'theme' every night we play, and go and dress accordingly, which can also include specific vehicles that we'll buy, too.

GTA Online is the perfect sandbox game that I've always wanted.

I might have a different opinion of it if I'd played it for ten years, but that'd only be "it's great, but I've played it all to death". And I had bought GTAV on launch back in 2013 and had played online for a few months (then sold my 360 and didn't touch the game again until this year); there used to be nothing to do, so if that's someone's last time trying it out, I recommend going back in.

I'm not even a car guy, I know poo poo-all about them in real life, and GTA Online has me checking out all sorts of rides, as if I knew what I was talking about outside of the game.

Yeah gta online can just be fun co-op gta, you do not have to engage with random players at all if you dont want to.

Ratchet and Ckank update: finished the game, was having some issues here and there. I'm playing through the ng+ challege mode atm, skipping cutscenes and generally rushing seems to give me more crashes, especially around setpiece sections involving portals.

Was running low on disc space tho and playing off the battery is definitely a bad idea.

One issue was kinda funny, the game would drop to an absolute crawl, resolution would lower drastically, single digit fps. At the same time the systems fans would turn on full. Then suddenly the game eould go back to 40fps, and the fans would just stop completely. Then the whole cycle would repeat. This thankfully only happened with the dynamic resolution option enabled and when the deck wasn't plugged into power.

I want to use it sometimes, but not every time I attack. As it stands if I haven't used my bonus action already, then a melee attack automatically adds the secondary attack. Even if the first hit was lethal

I see it listed in the spellbook as a common action but there are no toggles I can find.

Further to this, the online portion really shines with at least one other person, though preferably 3 others. I play regularly in a group of 4, and we've gone through Valheim, Sea of Thieves, and then GTA online, which lasted WAY longer than the other games. In fact, the only reason we'd be slowing down with it is because we're all now into BG3.

There IS a bunch of single player content in gta online, but only 1 heist can be done solo, and a lot of the jobs take advantage of you having help.

The prison break heist is one of my favourite parts of any game ever. There's a great mix of content that sees everyone splitting off and doing different tasks, and having everyone converge on the airfield in an orgy of gunfire and explosions is just incredible.

I can't speak for BG3 (yet) but I recently installed the Cinders mod for Dark Souls 3 and it takes a little bit more work than doing it on Windows, but mainly all I had to do was enable the setting to show hidden folders (it's literally two clicks) so I could copy the mod files to the game folder, and add a startup command to the game in its Steam settings. After that, it worked like a charm. Presumably, it shouldn't be much different for BG3, but I would see if someone smarter than myself has done it yet.
