What everyone else said. It's marketed as a theft retrieval device, usually comes with a tacked-on charge (which they admittedly didn't fight us on waiving while we were pushing for complete removal) and is often installed poorly/dangerously by tapping into the existing wiring. In some cases it can cause a parasitic draw that will leave you stranded. In our case we got very lucky and it was "just" an OBD-II passthrough connector. At first they absolutely refused to sell us the car without Kahu, stating that it was part of their contract with the supplier or whatever. After we threatened to walk they quickly folded. We watched them remove it and won't be going back to that dealer. Fifty Three fucked around with this message at 18:26 on Aug 8, 2023 |

Sometime between 2am last night and this morning, I lost the last key that works in my Saturn Vue's ignition (I have another that only opens the doors (and no fobs...)). I spent hours searching for it because it has to be someplace around my house, but I got really fed up with the whole thing. Anyways, now my Vue starts with a screwdriver and I'm gonna keep it that way. The blue resistor simulates/bypasses the "passkey" security system that's inside the lock cylinder. Black circle is the electromechanical stuff that the lock cylinder tailpiece would normally turn, but now anything can turn it. Don't steal it ok?

Anyways, now my Vue starts with a screwdriver and I'm gonna keep it that way. Wire that resistor to the harness with a hidden switch, and they won't be able to steal it. Or just buy another ignition cylinder and key. Or just take the ignition cylinder to a locksmith and see if it's one they can disassemble to read the keyways. Or see if the dealer or a locksmith can cut a key from the VIN - you'll need proof of ownership. Ford, for example, used to do it but decreed that they wouldn't keep records for keys for cars older than 10 years, but apparently the locksmiths have access to a database.

Darchangel posted:Wire that resistor to the harness with a hidden switch, and they won't be able to steal it. Yeah I'll tidy it up and add a switch. But I'm not doing any of the other things! If I wasn't able to bypass passlock I would have gotten a new cylinder+key, as I think that's actually the cheapest option.

Passlock is a loving joke anyway. Especially THAT implementation - you could still start it with a screwdriver, without the resistor, if it's long enough to press the 2nd switch inside the ignition switch (the tip of the key presses it).

No, in my case that wouldn't work. The BCM needs to read a resistance. I took the passkey module out of the ignition cylinder assembly. The way it works is that when the ignition cylinder is in the "on" position, a small magnet is rotated into position over a hall effect sensor which puts the resistance into the circuit. The BCM does not care if the resistance is in circuit the entire time, though, so bypass is very easy. When I have some time I'll replace the hall sensor with a toggle switch, or maybe just totally bypass it, but for now my 4.4k resistor is doing the trick. This is the passkey module from the ignition cylinder assembly. Hall effect sensor on the left. edit: The car WILL start without this resistance being sensed, but turns itself back off in a few seconds if the resistance doesn't appear in the circuit. sleepy gary fucked around with this message at 04:09 on Aug 13, 2023 |

I thought they'd dropped the hall effect sensor by 2004 for the most part (obviously I don't know what year your Vue is, but my 06 Ion didn't have the hall effect switch).
