House Arano (from the Campaign) gets a callout in the latest Battletech Recognition Guide.

Captain Chris McMillen: McMillen was a MechWarrior in House Arano’s Royal Guard. When the Aurigan Coalition threatened to fracture in the Directorate Coup, McMillen remained faithful to his liege lady, following Lady Kamea into exile and fighting in almost every major battle of her long and bloody Restoration. In one notable engagement, McMillen and his Phoenix Hawk single-handedly smashed a reinforced Taurian armor lance in an hour-long running battle. Slated for ennoblement, McMillen was killed when damaged sensors and comm gear and a confusion of orders resulted in him standing unaware squarely in the landing zone of an Aurigan DropShip.

Most of us can still remember the first time the dropship accidentally crushed one of our mechs.

More like taking an ace combat game and swapping out the plane for a mech. Don't go into an AC game expecting Dark Souls like combat.

OwlFancier

The old AC games were much more in the stompy robot territory, which I think is largely an artifact of them being more primitive generally and not able to do the flashy stuff the new ones can.

If anything AC6 looks a bit less anime than AC4, which was the last one I played, breifly, as I couldn't handle the way it felt to play, having really enjoyed AC1 and 2.

They always had the ability to skate around with your boosters, but it used to feel much more like piloting a vehicle rather than the seizure inducing flying around and boost-dodging focus of later games which seem much more like controlling a character that happens to be a robot, rather than driving a tank, that happens to be a robot (and also possibly still kind of a tank, if you use the tank legs)

In AC2 you could build your AC to be quite mobile and even to be fairly airborne, but there was no real extra mobility so it's just like an extended jump jet, AC4 had you building poo poo that barely touched the ground. I think they even had an in universe explanation where the new super anime mechs were like, a new kind of technology, while the clunky old ACs were basically cannon fodder.

AC6 looks interesting, but I'm not sure whether I would enjoy it.

On your own its ok. The allied AI is probably the weakest part of the game and you can always feel it.

With friends its a good game. The game, with mods, can provide some really tense battles where everything goes to hell and you're all desperately fighting your own battles, trying to give support to your friends any chance you get.

They've improved the base game significantly now, over like 3 major patches, to the point where it's better than the AI mod.

It's still not perfect, but it's much better than it was.

Considerably better than it was. The DLC campaigns show the attention to detail that the base game lacked.

That said it’s still probably the worst iterative mainline entry (assuming you are comparing them to when they were recently released). I don’t know how to properly explain this besides saying it sparks less joy than when I played previous titles did when I first got them, but I’d rather play it than them because modern graphics are nice and some of those old UI’s were the worst. Not that this one is good.

In short Meh, get it on sale.

Edit: I understand co-op makes it a lot more fun.

Proc gen being the goto solution for the game really made it feel bland. Theres a couple of actually planned out missions, but theyre far rarer than they should be, especially when you compare it to the last mercenary mainline game released, 4, where every mission was an actual planned experience other than the solaris matches. Hell even some of the main story missions in 5 are indistinguishable from mission_contract_seed_arid_1a_recon or mission_contract_seed_lunar_3d_attackdefend

BTA 16.4 Patch

Mostly focused on quirk rebalancing, HGR and Snub-Nose PPC got a rework, and various other stuff.

BTA has released "BTA Light". It's a one off release off BTA 3062 that's closer to the vanilla game.
https://www.bta3062.com/index.php?title=BTA_Light

Stuff that's gone:

quote:

Any non-canon mech variants or chassis that were not available in exactly 3062-3063, including the MWO non-canon chassis (Corsair, Sun Spider, Roughneck). This also included chassis that are canon but no longer are available, such as the Age of War designs like the Mackie and obscure designs like the Dragoon, these have been removed. The total body count was around 1k total variants.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT ABOVE: The Bull Shark remains in BTA Light despite being non-canon as it was part of the base game and is a core part of the Heavy Metal storyline.
Community Content
Battle Armor in their entirety (both for players and for the OpFor)
VTOLs in their entirety
Unit airdrop beacons and contracts
Strafing runs
Superheavy Mechs
Land-Air Mechs (LAMs)
OpFor and Contract Type Specializations
Resupply trucks and mobile field bases
The Sanctuary Worlds factions, their techbase, and their event chain
The 331st Royal BattleMech Division and their event chain
Several of the BTA-specific contract fights, such as BTA Calling and Kringle's Killers, were removed.

IT REQUIRES A NEW DOWNLOADER!

I had an assload of LAMs show up on a flashpoint early on when I was mostly doing 3-4 skull missions by fielding an assload of mediums, and the flashpoint was limiting me to four mechs.

Goddamn this is PERFECT.

If this is basically BexCE with mechlab, I’m set for the rest of this games life.

Tired of fiddling with BA, when I drop as many BA as mechs. Love vehicles, but happy to lose VTOLS since they’re basically just only good to use for BA carriers. Community content is just too broad. LAMs are funny when you use them, and lovely when not, so I’ll trade them out. And I never used air strikes, just because they were said to be OP, so no loss there.

It seems pretty good, but it being a one off means It’s not likely to get other changes that get made. That might not be a bad thing, depending on your point of view. Might be neat if they were able to release Light every several releases, but i can see why they wouldn’t really want to, either.

OwlFancier

I wouldn't deploy with BA, that's why you can fire it at the battlefield from space. Solves both the issue of it being annoying to transport and fragile as hell, and also it pilots itself so you don't have to click as much, just equip your dudes with drop targeters and forget about it once it's launched.

BA are insanely easy and safe to transport and you don't even need to bring APCs or VTOLs, BA claw hardpoints are half a ton to slap on literally any mech you want. They're also monstrously overpowered in numerous ways, though they've hammered down on some of the more egregious ones(RIP Golem squads doing 400+ damage salvos every turn).

I kinda dig the fear factor, honestly. If I let them close in, that's my own drat fault.

They really oughta use the infantry ambushes more in the urban maps. It'd be nice to see a camo-netted ambush version of it on normal woodland/jungle maps too.

For a while there I had a lance of 7/11 moving 50 tonner punchbots that would drop BA. They would reliably one-hit KO a Mech or two, drop BA who could finish anyone left off.

Then I had a few bad runs of losing limbs and lost the best hand actuators, and they were no longer one-punch wonders.

I finally got to the final Bounty Hunter mission in MW5 and it took so long to gather enough intel that it wasn't really challenging at all for the lance I brought. The confrontation after the big plot twist took probably less than 30 seconds and the final boss died before he could get a single shot off. After so many DLC missions that were actually interesting to play, this one fell flat even compared to the original campaign.
