The general public is also very aware of the ever-changing and increasingly lovely streaming landscape, and how the streaming business model is affecting their viewing habits. Older network shows move from platform to platform, Netflix notoriously cancels their own shows no matter how passionate the fans are.

I mean, 1899 was Netflix’s #2 most watched show for 3 consecutive weeks when it debuted, and then they cancelled it 2 months later. It’s insane. If people watching a show doesn’t make it successful, then what the gently caress defines success anymore? And why would a viewer invest any time into a show if even the most popular shows are at risk for cancellation at any time, just because they don’t hit some arbitrary metric set by an algorithm?

Viewers are definitely frustrated at the business, and I’m seeing lots of public support for the writers from average people (aside from the chuds who think everyone who works in TV is automatically a zillionaire).

What does most watched mean? Most first episode ‘impressions’? How many people actually finished the season(s)?

Every time I finish a popular game on a console I pop an achievement that’s like ‘21% of players achieve this’ and it’s just finishing the basic campaign. Everyone is multitasking and nobody wants to admit it, so they obfuscate the public data.

All the metrics are made up and everyone is lying to themselves.

God I would loving love for these streaming services to have to open up their books and show the numbers. It's almost as if... there should be federal regulation on this kind of thing.

Its comical because California is supposed to be the land of regulation (and I guess we kinda are - RIP to my menthol cigarettes).

We'll create massive needed legislation to regulate and protect workers - and then carve out massive exceptions for the entertainment industry.

Your mother!

It's important to note that this is only the on-set VFX crew, a 52-person crew that does things like wrangling data, managing production and the like, that has petitioned to unionize under IATSE. This doesn't touch any of the (very horribly overworked) CGI artists, who badly need union representation.

I'm no expert, but it looks like Netflix is compensating for the lack of future shows from America with international shows, and a lot of them are from South Korea. Surely they can't gently caress around with the unions in multiple regions at once.

Netflix has to make European produced content in order to comply with certain EU rules for grants and other tax purposes, so they have that content pipeline to use while the US productions are stopped.

Yeah, I watched a K-drama called My Name the other day and it was 'Netflix original' which the Korean union might understandably and well they should mean 'if we're doing this for you we deserve a bigger cut' and I'm going to assume because it's Netflix they absolutely do.

Pinterest Mom
Jun 9, 2009

Keep in mind that "Netflix Original" might mean "produced by Netflix", or it might mean "Netflix is the first company to have bought the rights to this foreign-produced thing in your market". Better Call Saul, for example, was marketed as a Netflix Original in Canada.

But, yeah, Netflix has had a long-running strategy of leaning heavily on international diversification as a way to differentiate itself from other streaming services and just better penetrate foreign markets. It's probably a happy coincidence from their point of view that that also makes them more resilient to a US strike, but it's really cool for Korean creators that this is the first time they really have leverage over Netflix and can bargain for more.

Yeah I think it was earlier in this thread that somebody posted a tweet noting that the issue for the streamers in releasing their numbers is that it will reveal either:

Their viewership numbers are high and they owe millions (probably far more than that) in residuals they just.... haven't been paying.

OR

Their viewership numbers loving suck and the feasibility of streaming as a platform just isn't there and their share price will absolutely tank.

Not defending the streamers but (as I understand it) their viewing numbers are a lot harder to directly translate to revenue than other industries. Like, movies can directly point at ticket sales, and broadcast TV can charge more for ads on higher-viewed shows, but the streamers just have a # of subscribers and a # of views per episode and it's not immediately obvious how those connect apart from no-brainers like a new season of Stranger Things dropping and subscriber numbers spiking the same month. Squid Game could have huge view numbers but it didn't necessarily make them more money if it's just people who were idly scrolling by.

I remember hearing somewhere that for Amazon Prime, the only number they care about is "first show watched after subscribing" which I see the logic of but completely fails to account for existing customers who only subscribe for the Boys (or whatever) but don't bother unsubbing in between seasons. And Amazon in particular has a harder job than anyone else connecting views to subs because I'd bet almost everyone subs for the two-day shipping and the video is basically an afterthought

This is certainly a more charitable take than they're due though, especially for the also-rans like Peacock/Paramount/etc. who probably aren't far from realizing they were making more money selling their stuff to Netflix. Also doesn't justify screwing over the residual-holders: they already did their job getting a ton of eyeballs on content for you, it's your job to figure out how to make money from it after paying them what they're owed

LividLiquid

My favorite part about the two-day shipping is that it usually takes like six days even if you live in the same loving city as the company. But at least it's cheaper than paying for shipping on a per-item basis.

But yeah, I subscribed for that and not their video, which I almost never use.

They've pulled a lot of new (as in less than a year old) movies and shows off the service in the past few months and pretty much everyone involved with their creation seems to think it's retaliation

Yeah, probably anything that involves just the life sized Sonic, Tails and Knuckles dolls they use as stand ins for the CG shots. Sonic 2 had a lot of shots to it that had functionally no human actors on set, so I imagine they can get away with the same stuff for Sonic 3 until the strike is over.

In fact, this is a big part of why the action in those movies look pretty good: there is a lot of actual real locations, with real practical explosions and effects to mix in with the cgi creatures.
