skooma512 posted:Been watching Strange New Worlds and holy poo poo this show is good. I had low expectations going in but they knocked it out of the park. The finest Trek I've seen in years, and probably pound for pound will be the best series of them all. All killer no filler, but I've only just started S2. I'll say it's good for different reasons TNG and DS9 are good and as a star trek show it's perfectly fine. Something about the old shows just has something that has since never really been replicated and I dunno how to articulate it. It certainly does nail exactly what a Star Trek show should be.

Yeah I know what you mean. DS9 is still my top show but it's certainly not perfect. Maybe it was the 26 episode seasons which gave them more room to screw around in? STW is a tight show probably because it has to be with 10 episode runs and movie grade vfx.

TNG and DS9 were free of homeland security editing their narratives. the writers were more or less free to explore the realm of "what if our future selves were more pure and tried their best to understand other cultures" you see it in a lot shows pre-9/11

The whole thing where no side is fully good nor evil feels kind of centrist in concept but it makes for better television imo, plus this way nobody is gonna be burning all their Hot D merch after a character they had decided was their wish-fulfillment vehicle does a war crime Ironically enough, in real politics the centrists are the ones saying one of the two main factions is pure good and the other is pure evil, so the idea of nuanced conflict being a centrist concept doesn't really hold up anyway

there was never good and evil in nobles saddling up to stab each other's peasants. just a bunch of wreckers. it's not centrist to depict feudalism as it was, or at least the closest approximation that people's attention spans will accommodate

Also why season 2 of GoT was the best one IMO: all sides in the succession crisis are just flawed enough that there's no obvious "correct" rooting interest. Even someone like Tyrion, who is trying to make the best of a bad situation, is doing so in the service of his rear end in a top hat father and nephew (and is then tossed to the side once the latter is secure on the throne again!)

I checked out the novel from the library today and got a little chuckle when I noticed the cover has a picture of Margot Robbie with her feet propped up on a stool. I don't even think it's a scene in the movie. He knows everybody knows about his foot fetish and I think he's just playing into it for laughs at this point.

The book Hot D is based on us supposed to be a history book with dueling narrators, and is intentionally unreliable. So while the broad strokes are true (like out comes off battles) everything else is subject to change because it's all hearsay. Anyways I liked season 1, season 2 will probably disappoint and I can just blame the writers strike

Lol Tarantio made a whole Rick Dalton Expanded Universe? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Films_of_Rick_Dalton https://twitter.com/VideoArchives/status/1659643499527151616?s=20 https://twitter.com/VideoArchives/status/1661050864122085377?s=20 quote:Tarantino goes on to discuss Dalton's roles, read from a book supposedly written about the actor, and even recite chunks from a Q&A the director claims to have conducted with Dalton in 1999. Along the way, we learn that Dalton wanted to play the role of the doomed Garry in John Carpenter's The Thing and that the actor's stunt double Cliff Booth (played by Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) directed The Fireman Part 2 after The Warriors filmmaker Walter Hill passed on the project. Tarantino also explores how Dalton enjoyed something of a comeback during following an incident (depicted in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) when he incinerated one of Charles Manson's followers with a working prop from one of his movies.

feel like in 20s & 30s movies violence against women was used to make the villain look like a dangerous gangster and at some point by the 50s it's shifted and the serious men are making tough calls and dropping broads with a single ppalm
