And if it’s iCloud that is low on storage, check this out: https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/check-your-icloud-storage-on-any-device-mm039c13d410/1.0/icloud/1.0 I’ll get warned and start culling photos and videos. Usually not a bad place to start if one is using iCloud for that.

Does anyone have recommendations for a pencil for an iPad 10? I know that the first Apple Pencil works for it, but I figure there are cheaper and better alternatives.

cheaper? yes. better? probably not. iirc the logitech crayon and the $20 pencils on amazon are missing pressure sensitivity

There was a good verge article about the cheap amazon pencils that basically said 'if you're not an artist and you don't mind a more inelegant pairing process, these are fine and you won't notice a difference in things like note-taking. And they're so cheap that they're worth a punt anyway.

yeah, you can do cheaper, but definitely not better. the amazon/aliexpress pencil knockoffs will work but there are often big compromises - no pressure sensitivity, no wireless charging (if you're looking at pencil 2 for an ipad pro), fiddlier to pair and power on/off, etc. I've got a Logitech Crayon that my kid uses sometimes on her iPad, and it's nice enough - it also lacks pressure sensitivity, but it pairs painlessly and seems more trustworthy than the $20 knockoff pencil I've used once or twice, and it's a nice shape for kid hands. But I got it on sale for like $30, it's harder to recommend at the $65 that it's currently going for on Amazon. At that point you might as well spend the extra $15 and get the actual Pencil.

I appreciate the advice. I want to be able to draw on the tablet, but I'm not an artist so an expensive pen is probably a waste of money, when I don't know how much I will use it.

Anyone know how well a 7th Gen (2019) iPad holds up today? It'd be for my mom, so it would mostly be for video playback, and browsing (with dozens of tabs open).

Wait, an air from the same year is just 20g lighter (same screen size)?

I have the dumbest loving bug that happens in safari any time I drag a tab out of the window to open side by side. It will become and overwrite the first pinned tab completely and the new window just duplicates all of that. I can't go back, I can't reopen the one that gets eaten, just poof.

Our newest iPad around is a 7th gen and it's holding up great. I haven't thought twice about it being slow and it runs everything well. The 7th gen iPad has 3GB of RAM, just like the 9th gen. We also have a 6th gen that's starting to show its age but gets used mostly for playing Minecraft. The 6th gen has the same CPU as the 7th but only 2GB of RAM.

I picked up the 11” Pro a few days ago and am super happy with it. I was so used to my old slow as hell one so everything seems lightning fast. Thanks to everyone who offered advice. I have a makeshift charging station set up with a USB-C cable that I use to charge my PS5 controllers, but it seems to charge this new iPad very slowly. Is there any reason I shouldn’t use a higher wattage charger with this? I have one for my Dell laptop that’s 65w.

I personally wouldn't get a 7th gen iPad. A 3rd gen iPad Air is ~= the 8th gen iPad. This is my old post when I was grappling with a similar issue: ~Coxy posted:I wouldn't replace an Air2 with a 5, 6, 7, unless you're desperate for IOS16 and that's the primary reason for the upgrade. ~Coxy fucked around with this message at 13:11 on Jul 30, 2023 |

Thank you to whoever posted about Coconut Battery being able to easily check battery cycle counts and capacity, it's good to see. It looks like the cost for an ipad 8 battery replacement is $99, according to Apple's estimation tool? Do they actually replace the battery in this specific one, or just give me a remanufactured one and take the current one as trade in? One of our iPads really has some city miles on it, under 80% battery capacity at less than 3 years old and only 600 cycles: Because I think it's neat to see this stuff, here's all the iPads we have in active usage: Ipad Mini 4 hanging in strong: Ipad 6 doing just OK: Seriously though, why isn't this metric just available in settings? Why did I have to install and run a Mac application and plug it into a computer?

I am pretty sure that for phones, tablets, and laptops, they do an actual battery replacement under most circumstances. The only thing they replace outright is the Watch. At least, when I sent in a watch for a swollen battery, they replaced the whole unit with a refurb. Either way you'll be in good shape if you get the replacement done. Just make sure you do a full backup and operate under the assumption the device will be wiped/replaced.

I got an iPad and I'm new to iOS. I got narwhal for my reddit app and I'm seeing that in iOS you can't associate a URL to an app of choice?! I heard that Opener can be purchased to do this but I'm only seeing people say you can open links in Safari that way. Can you from Chrome or discord too?

It's up to the app makers to register extensions for safari to call third party apps. Apollo used to let you jump from safari to app but the app is dead.

I want to replace my aging MacBook and aging iPad with an iPad Pro, and I'll need a pencil + keyboard to go with it. For the keyboard, I want something I can easily attach and remove, and something sturdy enough so I can use it on my lap (I take a lot of notes while sitting on my couch and watching TV). Any recommendations?

It’s expensive, but I’m loving the poo poo out of the Magic Keyboard. It’ll charge the tablet through its USB port but has no battery of its own, it’s got backlit keys that feel nice, it’s sturdy. I use it for literal laptop use on the couch all the time and I’m still over 60WPM. I’m using the 12.9” and it’s excellent. No problems since I got it in February.

You literally just lift it off the magnetic back. I really recommend the magic keyboard for anyone getting an ipad. You can usually find them used on ebay for like half the price. I don't know if I can recommend paying full price for one.

Anyone have any recommendations for a travel laptop backpack that has a dedicated padded sleeve for a laptop AND another one for a tablet? I’ve seen a bunch that are pretty big, but I’m looking for something smaller and minimalist. Currently I’m leaning towards the Able Carry Daily Plus, but I’m open to other suggestions!

I really like the Bellroy Transit backpacks, it does have just the one separate padded sleeve but I easily fit a 13” laptop and an ipad pro 11” in there without it being tight. Tons of room in the main compartment with great side pockets for water bottle etc too. I have the plus, it’s very roomy. Their smaller ones might be a good option for you too!
