There’s actually a really neat linguistic reason for this and why our pronunciation varies despite similar spellings and vowel usage. Migration, education, and cultural differences among other things all play roles in why English is hosed up.

She also made me notice how much is culturally ingrained in the way people do stereotypical accents, always yelling and spitting like Hitler for German but doing some sexy Pepe Le Pew for French. Switch your over-the-top characters and, surprise, the language sounds different.
