When you write things that you know will be poorly received by the reader, does it make you brave or just a jackass? I’ll leave that one to the philosophers

He’s the one guy that confounds me in the Deadspin to Defector switch. Figured he would have been left behind because his soccer writing has been dogshit for years

Even if I agreed with what he was arguing, his paragraphs of "here's what you, an utter fool, might be thinking right now" is extremely goddamn annoying to read. It does seem like every article he writes is some sort of response to an imagined hater of a player he likesNybble posted:He’s the one guy that confounds me in the Deadspin to Defector switch. Normally I just sort of skip over his articles, but he fell back immediately on if you disagree you must be a tech bro racist that maybe made it feel like bad attempt at humor. Like the bit is he’s a dumb American soccer fan kinda thing and years ago it was funny because who cares about soccer and now it’s ok because they have actual good soccer writers on staff. He’s been dire for years and it just doesn’t make sense.

I can't for a second believe he's a good editor. He was crafting 400 word run-on sentences routinely in the deadspin days.

he 100% feels like the kinda guy that's a phenomenal editor for anyone else because he knows all of the rules of grammar and whatnot, but is a terrible writer himself because he feels like he knows enough to break all of the rules but he's just not that good

Haisley’s writing was suddenly pretty damned good during the Men’s World Cup; like, a total 180 from his previous run of paragraph-long sentences + frontrunning + not understanding fundamental things. Then he leaves for a bit and comes back from paternity leave and it’s like those good articles never happened.
|
![]() |

Reminder that Billy Haisley once opened a Deadspin article with a 335-word one-sentence paragraph.quote:Nevertheless, it's important to clarify that the person we see on the field or in advertisements, no matter how athletically admirable, is not necessarily the same as the person who exists beyond the spotlight. That conflation between good deeds on the field and a good person off of it is the origin of much of what is dangerous about godding up athletes. By the same token, if there is to be anything of broader socio-cultural importance to glean from sports and the people in it, and if athletes and their exploits can be said to represent anything bigger than the individuals who perform them, then it must lie in figuring out how to excise what is transcendent from what must be denounced. This isn't about liking Neymar as a person, but it is about learning about what his career has to teach. I could read this after three energy drinks and a mountain of coke and my eyes would still slowly close and I'd forget where I was and what I was doing. White is on the grift circuit, but he's also got serious brain worms. He ran against Ilhan Omar in 2022, IIRC.

I think the "he refused to fly" thing was overblown and not really true but he did ask for a ton of accommodations in general that weren't realistic. In general seems like a guy not super in tune with reality for whatever reason.

He had anxiety issues all the way back when he was at Iowa state. It was the reason given for his awful FT shooting. Don’t remember the plane thing in college, but also colleges aren’t really going to make special accommodations very often. Guy just never could put it together mentally for the NBA, and I guess it’s only gotten worse with age.

And he wasn’t nearly as entertaining about it as Marvin Barnes:quote:Often the colorful personality, Barnes once refused to board a plane from Louisville to St. Louis. Because the flight was scheduled to arrive (Central Time) before its departure time (Eastern Time), Barnes famously said, "I ain't getting in no drat time machine." He rented a car instead.

royce white was a BLM protester and generally progressive until he joined the big 3; steve bannon got in his ear and he's been doing the maga america first thing ever since the plane/mental health accommodations made him upset but it didn't break his brain
