Morbus posted:a lot of them are AI generated. Just about everything on these lovely list/summary/"news" pseudo-blog websites that are carbon copies of each other is passed through an LLM at some point. They just crawl each other, or other websites, or reddit, and have an LLM puke out an article about it. Zleague.gg gained some recent notoriety for this after being trolled into writing an article about "the return of glorbo" in WoW, among other things. Just checked my search history, not a single result on the first page from a website I don't know. Wikias, game review websites, walkthroughs, etc. Like maybe some of it was rewritten by an AI, I don't know, but there wasn't a single one where it just straight up didn't match my query or replaced Grymforge with Saddesmithery or whatever. Maybe this one is AI-generated? (spoilers for Act 1 of BG3, obviously) https://exputer.com/guides/baldurs-gate-3-icy-crystal/ If so, I still got just the info I wanted by skimming through it. But then it's probably not AI-generated, just something copied and slightly rewritten from a wiki by a real human being.

I can't fathom trying to find out stuff about a game anywhere that's not gamefaqs or a forum. 10+ years ago if I looked for "fallout 3 video game secret thing" and ended up on IGN or something I would blame only myself.

Its not just that google has gotten shittier, the average website has too. Everything is designed around mobile devices now so all text has to be broken up into 2 sentence chunks with ads wedged in between them and you have to scroll forever to find the relevant bits of information. Even with adblockers the amount of page space dedicated to ads is ugly as sin.

Instead of just giving you a recipe each one needs an essay with a grandiose background for the recipe so they shove as many ads as they can to you before you even get to the ingredients list

This has been my experience as well. I remember back when I had facebook and the content (on video games or comics and movies) would sometimes not ultimately really address the topic And/or Be incorrect even by my knowledge of the subject Seems like that shallow content spam has evolved. Still, there usually is a good place to learn a lot about a game, maintained by people who do a whole bunch of video game stuff I wouldn't have the patience for. But you increasingly rely on finding that out through already knowing a place like SA.

Amazon has gotten worse to the point where I can't find products I know I've bought from them before unless I know the exact name, size etc. e: anecdotally, encyclopedias and reference books are back in a big way. I've seen more people using The Cambridge Ancient History, The Oxford Classical Dictionary, the various Handbooks, this year in their papers.

For example: I can never find how to nagivate to the published NSF certs and maximum usage data on their site so I always use google to get to them, so far it still works fine, but I dread when it won't.
