Does anybody else do this: I find a random small item that I need maybe two or three of, it'll have a shipping price of $2 for one unit, but when I add an additional item it jumps the shipping cost up to something like $8, and if I add a third one it jumps up again to something like $13. So rather than buy three items together for $13 s&h, I buy each one three times and spend $6 total on s&h instead of $13.

Is this a common trick? Should I feel bad? Am I abusing the system in a way that is frowned upon and will ultimately get me banned?

I figure if they let you do it, do it. I've been haunting the "3+ items" thing for a while, ordering e.g. single cupboard door latches on each order (because they won't let you add multiple of the same item). The problem now is that I've mined the offerings for everything I want, (or am vaguely interested by) but I still need a couple more of the latches.

Seems fine. I've also seen it where an item has free shipping, but if you want more than one suddenly shipping is $5. I think it's just a newbie trap for people who don't pay attention. They make a profit at the 1 item price, but if you don't catch the price jump for multiple items they can make even more profit.

Pretty sure its the "super economy" shipping not being offered for combined orders. Probably for a bunch of reasons including

- package size
- refund risk (AliExpress standard or better has way better tracking and you are less likely to be able to say it's lost)
- payment risk (AliExpress hold funds in escrow until you receive the package, so better shipping means faster release of funds)
- listing juice (free/cheap shipping in search results doesn't take into account multiple order count)

I doubt AliExpress let them significantly pad shipping costs for most things using their shipping labels, it'll be based off the weight/size they've put in the listing.

I actually used Alibaba to order something in my professional life.

I'm working on a medical device that will need a custom load cell, which is just a thin film strain gage glued to a machined aluminum rod.

The cheapest supplier in the US wanted about 85 usd per load cell, and that was with an order of 500 or more. We're still in the testing and regulatory phase, so we only need like 20 max

On a whim, I reached out to a load cell manufacturer on Alibaba, and send them a very compartmentalized design file for just the load cell. They had the right iso certifications, and even if they didn't the parts would still be fine for premarket testing.

the cost for 24 load cells, made to my specs? 9.18 usd each

man, I hope they work.

The company is called Vixic, they made knock off printers for brother and Dymo.

Also if you have temu coupon, they have cheap black color tapes. I have invested in too many brother tapes, I can't switch to cooler and much smaller D30 thingy.

Huh the D30 label printer looks pretty good now too but I don't understand why the labels for that are all fixed width even if there isn't a cutter built into the device, so now I'm not sure which to go with

Also the Vixic one has this review

quote:

as it turns out my label cassettes I already had for my Brother PT, aren’t compatible with this printer afterall. If you remove some ribs inside the housing of the printer you can make it work though. The ribs can be removed with a stanley knive or scalpel, slicing off little layers at a time.
Are there different types of brother labels?

Edit: Oh actually there are continuous labels for the d30 and there's another d35 model that uses the same labels and has a manual cutter built in for $30 so now I'm not sure what to go with

I think brother printers still have more color and background options? If D30 have continuous tape and transparent backgrounds then go with D30.

I think if you were truly worried about it you could get it and take it apart enough to see if it has some kind of memory chip.

Although, I don't know if something like this might usually have some kind of memory built in to store user settings. I don't think they would.

It seems like these devices are actually programmed to generate specific keystrokes, rather than acting as a generic HID input device that works with a driver/daemon, so I think they would have to have memory built in.

I'm not sure why having writable memory or not would really affect any way they might be malicious though.

I'm also not sure it's very likely that these devices are going to behave innocuously and then suddenly due something malicious at some point in the future, though.

The realistic concern would probably be the accompanying software having malware, not the device itself

I suppose you could run the software in a VM but that would be a bit of a PITA

I always fancied getting a custom LCD, like on those old Tiger games or digital watches, for some project. They're made very similarly to PCBs but there don't seem to be any companies offering the service in a "just upload your file and we ship the result" way like the many Chinese PCB manufacturers do. You can find other people online talking about it, some people on YouTube made their own (not very easy, particularly since you have to buy the liquid crystal and that in itself is a similar adventure in Chinese companies), and a few people who did it and wouldn't tell anyone what company helped them (in case they got fed up doing tiny runs). I had a look on alibaba, sent a couple of messages, and they actually replied! Their prices for 100 were reasonable, though I wondered if that was in expectation of getting larger runs.

It was at that point that I realised I needed a project with a screen to actually proceed with the plan, since I had to actually *speak* to someone and not just do it on a whim, and I haven't continued with the idea.

I once met a guy who was working making very tough industrial gadgets, big steel cases with custom electronics inside. He'd figured out that even if he had the steel machined in China, and 50% of them were out of spec and needed reworked, it was still cheaper for him to do that and send the defective 50% to a local company to have them fixed, than to just have that local company manufacture them from scratch. I always wondered at what point the local company would just give up.
