Everyone's willing to be enemies on the day of a game, but it seems like for every sports rivalry you get one side building themselves up for the match, and the other either doesn't care or is busy focused on their own one-sided rivalry. There definitely are some out there, but I think it requires the two teams to be on roughly even footing, and for there to be few other genuine competitors. For example, Rangers and Celtic in Scotland, where they’re the top two teams in the country and nobody else has won the league in 40 years. Add to that their being in the same city and both clubs deep historical ties to Protestant and Catholic sectarianism and you’ve got one of the most bitter mutual rivalries in European football. Which is not to say they’re the only one!

USC-Notre Dame is also supposed to be a big rivalry (have played annually since 1926 excepting a few years due to World War II), the schools are over 2,000 miles apart from one another. I don't honestly know how intense that rivalry is, though, since it's nonconference.

Derbies like Old Firm can have intensive mutual rivalry. Or otherwise big matches of season between great historical teams like el Clasico. One way to know that "real" rivalries exist is that that there's also a term for more manufactured rivalry where league's PR people are hyping up feeling that doesn't exist: 'el Plastico'. People wouldn't have come up with a term for fake rivalries if real ones didn't exist to give contrast.

In international football, Ghana-Uruguay* is a pretty recent but a very intense and memorable one, and they sit on opposite sides of the Atlantic, so that's pretty far. * At the World Cup of 2010, Uruguayan master of shithousery Luis Suarez denied a last-ditch Ghana strike with his hand in the QF (he was sent off the pitch for it), causing the game to go to penalties with Uruguay winning. The two teams faced each other again in the 2022 World Cup in the first round. Predictably all involved said they would play nice but it was a slugfest almost immediately. Uruguay won again but neither team advanced to the Round of 16 so Ghana felt they were the moral victors lol. e: In recent years you might also add Switzerland-Serbia to the list.

When A&M left the Big 12 they switched the hex rally from A&M to TCU and I think they should leave it that way because it’s actually a lot funnier for the woke lib longhorns to cast a hex on Texas Christian University

I don't think Yank(ee) should even count as a slur. It just means you're an American, and specifically from by far the coolest part of the USA, namely New England. I just imagine some homesteading, log cabin-building, abolitionist badass whose ancestors came over in the 1600s because they felt their insane Protestant sect was being repressed in the Old World. Basically John Brown. I think I'd be proud to be called a Yankee if I were American.

Giants/Dodgers in baseball is mutual, and goes back at least the late 1800s: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodgers%E2%80%93Giants_rivalry Even followed as they moved West! A fun one since it started as a cross town rivalry and is now cross-state.
