Eye of Balor 2-5

Prodigal brought her Mongoose up to a full run, crossing a few low sandy hills as she pursued the enemy Stinger with an almost single-minded zeal. It was pulling the classic bug ‘Mech maneuver: a deep flank, either to try to potshot one of her lancemates in the back or, more likely, to cool off before starting another attack run. Stingers weren’t the most dangerous of ‘Mechs, but with a pair of medium lasers they outgunned most of their contemporaries.

She brought the Mongoose around—at least in part. It wasn’t quite fast enough to match her intent, and making the final turn would’ve sent her tumbling on the sandy terrain; so she had to settle for twisting and skewering the enemy bug with her lasers. It weathered her fire with surprising endurance—at least until her Mongoose’s medium lasers converged over its narrow hip and blew its right leg clean off. Balance control completely lost, the Stinger’s auto-ejection mechanism kicked in and the enemy Mechwarrior’s rocketed just over Prodigal’s head.

The pirate’s command couch spun in dizzying circles as the parachute deployed and was immediately caught in swirling eddies of wind. She watched the pilot struggle with restraint straps that wouldn’t unlatch automatically until the command couch landed on a solid surface, trying to free themselves as the swirling winds sucked them straight into the center of the canyon—and then they were swallowed up by the river rapids; swept away so quickly even Prodigal’s beagle probe couldn’t track them.

“poo poo,” Prodigal cursed, then ordered, “Disable your auto-eject mechanisms. Ride your ‘Mech to the ground if you take a crippling hit. Ejecting in the canyon is a death sent—” Her DI computer howled a warning as an enemy ‘Mech got a hard target lock on her. Prodigal didn’t even have time to tug on the controls before a light autocannon shell struck her Mongoose in the back.

Heavily armored for a light BattleMech, the Mongoose was intended to engage and destroy bug ‘Mechs and other, older scouts. Even light autocannons couldn’t penetrate its armor in a single shot—from the front. But like the bug ‘Mechs it was designed to kill, the Mongoose’s rear armor was paper thin. Anything heavier than a .50 cal machine gun would punch clean through. Her damage diagnostics display flared an angry red as the autocannon shell punched into the Mongoose’s vitals from behind. Fortunately, no warning lights lit up on her board, but the hit still made her wince.

“Goddamn, that’s an impressive targeting system,” she switched to her rear camera, trying to get a look at the enemy medium ‘Mech. “Whatever that thing is.”

“We got it, boss, don’t worry,” Rampart’s Blackjack made the best of its speed to clamber over a nearly sheer sandstone hill. She dropped her ‘Mech down on the enemy ‘Mech’s flank, surprising a warrior who probably felt safe with their back to a stone cliff. The rest of the lance opened fire almost in unison, shredding the lightly-armored medium ‘Mech’s legs so quickly Prodigal wondered if it even carried as much armor as a Stinger.

Its pilot made a valiant attempt to keep the ‘Mech upright; but the dangling bundles of laser-scorched myomer muscle hanging from the gaping holes in its leg armor were telling. Its legs just weren’t moving the way the enemy Mechwarrior needed to. Rather than topple, it wobbled, first to the right, then to the left as the pirate made increasingly wide steps; like a teeteringly drunk sergeant she’d once witnessed on leave. And just like that drunk, the fall would’ve been inevitable if they hadn’t smashed their face into something first. For the drunk, it had been a metal signpost that cost them a tooth—and their dignity. For the enemy ‘Mech, it was a rock outcropping—and it likely cost them their life as it crushed their already-damaged cockpit, leaving only the impressive targeting array intact.

There's enough room in a hex for 3-4 'Mechs standing shoulder to shoulder, it doesn't take up enough space to matter.

Just be sure to keep your back covered going forward, remember that you've got an XL engine.

The Stinger is going to be a persistent nuisance, but that Thunderbolt is a walking fireworks factory. Pour enough fire into it and you're all but guaranteed to make it go pop from a lucky TAC.

Eye of Balor 2-6

“Thunderbolt’s going to want to stand and fight,” Grandpa broadcast, kicking his Hoplite into reverse to take cover behind a low hill. It wasn’t enough to stop him from getting tagged with a flight of LRMs, but fortunately most of those lost tracking or were blown off course by the canyon’s winds. A single cluster of missiles struck the Hoplite in the chest, but his combat computer told him the damage had been largely cosmetic.

With a precision that would’ve done an SLDF Mechwarrior proud, the Thunderbolt twisted in place to skewer Rampart’s Blackjack with its large laser. The shot caught her ‘Mech in the left arm—and if the shot hadn’t penetrated armor, the angry red glow of molten ceramics was telling. It wouldn’t take much to punch through whatever armor was left. He wanted to applaud, it was rare to see a Mechwarrior take full advantage of the Thunderbolt’s robust targeting-and-tracking suite.

“That’s a good pilot—but it’s a shame to see an old warhorse like that in the hands of pirates,” Theo lamented, mostly to himself. “Looks like they ripped out the SRM and some of the lasers—probably where they found the space for jets. Or maybe that’s just typical of a periphery hack-job? T-Bolt took a few hits, lost some weapons, and all they had to replace them with were jets.”

He took a shot with his autocannon, and shattered a half-dozen or so armor plates protecting the Thunderbolt’s right arm. It really was, too—while the Thunderbolt was now considered inferior to the SLDF’s new Crusaders, it still had nearly the same firepower as a Guillotine mated to a tubular Delta Dart LRM rack. While the Delta Dart series took a little longer to load than the Archer’s doombud racks, they fired with minimal staggering so they just got the missiles out of the launchers fast enough to make up for it. In a life-or-death situation, Theo thought he’d probably want the missiles downrange or in the bins when the shoots started coming in; not with half the payload still in the tubes waiting for exhaust to clear.

“They don’t have a chance of winning this and they know it,” Theo advised; “But they can hurt us and they know that too. They’ll probably bluster and try to cripple one of us enough to force us all to withdraw; or they’ll start a fighting withdrawal. If they string us out far enough they can pick us off one at a time, so don’t fall for it.”

“I’d still like a captive, and find out what they’re doing here. The planet’s supposed to be inhabited; but I can’t find any evidence of it. Maybe they can point us to a settlement, if they’re not lost like we are.” Prodigal paused, then agreed. “But If they get too far, we’ll let them go. I’m not going to let any of us get picked off because we got too greedy and chased them into unknown territory.”

Theo nodded—Prodigal may have been greener than an SLDF regiment on parade; but she knew sense when she heard it. That was better than half the rookie officers he’d ever dealt with; and not something he’d ever have expected from a Cameron. Or a Moon, for that matter. Hopefully she’d go far.
