My electric water bottles arrived, after filling one up and replacing the flex on the charging plug it came with it warmed up quite nicely. Even though you are not supposed to use it while plugged in I was curious about the potential for capacitive coupling so I placed it on a metal plate while it was heating and got about 50 volts on the meter between the plate and ground and no measurable amperage at least as far as my multimeter can detect, overall I am quite happy with it.

ASK ME ABOUT CROSSING THE STREAMS

I love the magnet charging cables.

I replaced every cable I had with them. Let me explain, I have a wife and kids, they all have various devices, I have an iPhone and all my crap. Micro, C, lightning - used to all need own cords everywhere all the time. Now, no matter what room or what needs to be charged, it always fits. I take my AirPods off a cord and can snap a flashlight on it, or a tablet, or any toy that needs recharging, or a PS4 controller or whatever else that charges, fits any cord. I can not oversell how great it is. I bought 20 cords and they all came with 3 plug things (one of each type) so have a bag of the extra tips in case one breaks too.

I bought a bunch of them at one point and my Apple stuff would just stop accepting them. They’re great when they work.

It worked pretty well but now the magnet on the plug side started disintegrating from snapping to its counterpart, making it useless and possibly dangerous if it shorts out

As this reviewer says,

You can buy replacement "nibs" on ali and temu.

I got like 6,7 cables in my house, killed (shorted) 2 cables because I sat the thing wrong. I don't worry about about burning my house or anything. But I can't recommend it anymore.

It's possible to sit the charge position wrong at 45 degree angle if you use the nib on a Bluetooth earbud.

I still use it regularly in my car because its much easier to connect the cable when you are driving.

Same. I have had 2 or 3 magnets break, and replaced a couple of cords that weren't charging well anymore but I am still way ahead in cost and convenience compared to when I had separate cables for all my devices. I broke a half-dozen or more "regular" charging cables by accidentally snagging the cord and pulling my phone or tablet off a table; invariably they would land on the charging port and break or bend the end of the cable. Hasn't happened once with the magnetic ones.

Also, when I am on the couch with a sleeping cat holding me immobile, I can use the cord to go magnet fishing for my glasses on the end table.

Knockoff sunglasses sellers are pretty ephemeral and tend to disappear after a month or just rename themselves. The best you can do really is buy one from a seller with a lot of sales. I’ve bought a lot of fake cycling sunglasses and it’s a bit of a diceroll. Some have been as good as the real thing including packaging and others have been a lump of plastic that look a bit like the original. At least with cycling glasses, there’s two tiers of quality: the absolute cheapest listings are usually bad but occasionally ok ~£5 a pair, and the more expensive ~£20 a pair that tend to be much better quality but are occasionally poo poo.

The glasses sellers tend to get taken down quite often compared to other stuff. A decent way I found is to occasionally check the knockoff reddit subs where people will post a link and review, e.g.:

https://www.reddit.com/r/FashionReps/comments/167gz5h/5kg_haul_to_spain_polo_shirt_nike_tee_and_socks/

Unfortunately it's just 3 days old and the Wayfarer link is already dead :v:

Yeah of course, they're like 70c each form the same link. But I think it's an issue inherent to this design which makes fragile magnets hit each other and I don't want to keep buying replacements quarterly.

It's too bad that there's no real standard for magnetic plugs, it would be really nice if the USB consortium made some kind of usb type m plug that required the pins to not be too exposed and the magnet to have a rubber/plastic gasket to reduce the risk of shattering when it snaps into place.

None of mine have broken yet but I already have two different kinds of cable, I use the simple round ones for 5v USB and these oval ones for usb-c laptop charging since they can negotiate 20v

I like these plugs the best, since they seem way more robust and harder to short circuit and it's not that much harder to make them snap into place.

Maybe something like this:

Uses AA battery, no strobe/SOS mode, has a filter to only let UV through.

The last time I flew I felt pretty clever using one to fish one of my Bluetooth earbuds out from between the seat and bulkhead.

Also to whomever said the Apple ones are annoying unreliable, I feel you. Never had a USB C or micro USB stop working, but the Lightning ones ones seem to have like a 25% chance to completely fail forever every time you take them out.

I got some of those cables that I’ve been using on my phone and iPad for months, thankfully I haven’t had that problem yet. I mostly like it because now it’s the same cable to charge them both - instead of separate lightning and usbc cables - but I do also like the snap of the magnet when it gets close.

I didn’t think I was being boastful but the universe got me anyway

It wasn’t actually the magnets, I moved the side table yesterday, when I finished reading last night I tried to place my phone on the side table and it landed on the floor. Must have landed right on the bottom.

That's closer to the type I have, and I found lighter things suffered attrition worse than heavier things. The Bluetooth headpiece I use for work has burned through like 3 adapters, while the cable remains fine. First thing to go is usually data transfer, at least with mine. Complete failure is more rare but I've had that happen, too.

I've been using two Essager plug-in magnets and one cable for about two and a half years with no problems at all. The cable stays plugged into the wall next to my bed, where it charges either my old-rear end Kindle Keyboard or my new-rear end tablet. Sometimes I bring the cable with me when I travel; sometimes I just remove the magnets from a device so the device can charge with a regular cable. I love the whole setup; it makes great sense for me. No chipping, no collecting metal dust, no nothing. It's a little slow to charge, but if I'm in a real hurry, I can always charge the traditional way.

My mom, who ruined a bunch of tablets/cables by ??? at or near the charging port, loves the magnetic stuff too, but has inexplicably gone through a bunch of them in the nearly two years she's been using them. I guess there are a few duds out there. I wish there were similar things for my Dell and her Asus laptop--particularly her laptop, because again, she's ruined a few by ??? at the charging port.

i bought some stuff from temu: kirby keychain for little jones, a thermal printer for us to play with, and some protein shaker bottles

of the two shaker bottles, one leaked and so i threw it away. the thermal printer works fine, but as far as i can tell only with the iphone app. i was hoping to use it with a raspberry pi, so that's disappointing. kirby's great though.

I use the 3-ring "Target logo" type round magnetic tips. I brought originals from Temu and replacement tips from ali and Temu. They all advertise with different charging Amp but seem to work together fine.

The only type of cable I would advise against is the one with led light at charging end. It seems to require more power and doesn't work all the time on a power brick or in a car.

This one

Haven't had one broken tip yet, they are tough.
