it makes sense to extend the 9/11 emergency because while the risk of death from terrorist attacks may be astronomically low, the terrorist threat has not fully subsided, and competently addressing endemic threats requires constant vigilance

I had a big bout of urticaria + swelling about 10 days after testing positive (last year, though) and I ended up getting prednisone for it. Just adding to the anecdotes, but I did find a article that I forgot to bookmark that said it wasn't uncommon. It was definitely my worst not-long-covid related symptom but ended up being treatable with prednisone + more antihistamines + rest + don't scratch please stop scratching oneself.

What's the best option for nasal sprays currently? It looks like probably Flo Travel Spray? Is Enovid worth it, does it work much better?

there's not super strong evidence one way or the other, but in my personal opinion iota carrageenan is the most convincing ingredient out of the nasal spray possibilities. flo travel seems fine, i think some people in thread use that and others use epothex, and some people maybe buy foreign brands that have been around longer?

I will throw out that I have been using Enovid for over a year now for high risk situations (dentist, haircuts, flights, doctors office situations) and have not once had any nasal irritation as a result, even on days when I had to use the max recommended daily dosage or whatever.

(I also never got COVID since then either but that's anecdata at best and not specifically an endorsement, ymmv, I am not a doctor)

I am note really sure what the point of Threads is, if "sensitive content" such as "COVID" or "vaccines" is disabled

https://thehill.com/policy/technology/4198601-threads-blocks-covid-related-searches-amid-spiking-cases/ posted:

Threads blocks COVID-related searches amid spiking cases

Threads, a new text-based social media platform created by industry giant Meta, is now blocking terms related to COVID-19 and vaccines on its search engines.

The Washington Post reported on Monday that the social media platform rolled out its revamp search engine last week, only for users to be met with a blank screen and a pop-up linking to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website when they type terms related to “covid” or “long covid”.

Words such as “sex,” “nude,” “gore,” “porn,” “coronavirus,” “vaccines” and “vaccination” are also blocked on the social media platform’s search engine, according to the Post.

In a statement, Meta told The Hill that Threads’ new search engine “temporarily doesn’t provide results” for words that may include “sensitive content.”

“We just began rolling out keyword search for Threads to additional countries last week. The search functionality temporarily doesn’t provide results for keywords that may show potentially sensitive content,” a Meta spokesperson said in its statement.

“People will be able to search for keywords such as “COVID” in future updates once we are confident in the quality of the results.”

Meta’s decision comes as COVID-19 has been rising in the U.S., as hospitalizations from the virus increased to 16 percent last week and has been steadily rising since July, according to data from the CDC.

Public health care workers have criticized Meta’s decision to block COVID-related searches, including World Health Network outreach director Julia Doubleday, who said that social media is vital to patients who are searching for more information about their recent illness diagnosis.

“Long covid patients have died of organ failure, infections, cardiac events and more, and social media is one place they can share information. Cutting off communication between suffering and disabled patients is cruel in the extreme,” Doubleday said. “It’s indefensible.”

I bought Betadine Cold Defence from a site that ships canadian products to the US. Works well, feels nice, and I can wake up without the inside of my nose lined with dried crustiness. If you use too much it can feel a bit like you’re congested though (or maybe I just need to drink more water). All it contains is iota carrageenan and saline which is nice, no irritation.

Betadine also has a track record and has been around for quite awhile and multiple studies have been done on it in relation to its effect on coronaviruses as far back as 2004. It’s price has doubled since the pandemic however but it’s still way cheaper than Taffix/Enovid/whatever else it’s called which is like fifty bucks+ not counting shipping.

I’ve used Enovid as well and it can irritate with repeated use, for me. It also expires 60 days after opening which drat.

Whether or not they protect I’ll let you know I got exposed yesterday by a helpful lady who told me five minutes into a conversation on her porch she’d been in quarantine for awhile and lauded paxlovid (so hopefully that means she was beyond infectiousness but lol lmao). If I get got right before boosters are approved I am going to scream.

My kid had her first Moderna shot two weeks ago to start their primary series. Now that the Bivalents EUA is revoked, I wonder if it'll be possible for me to switch her to the Pfizer 2023-2024 three dose series (so instead of receiving the Moderna 2023-2024 shot for her second dose, she'd actually do the second and third dose Of updated Pfizer).

Anyone ever mix and match vax for a pediatric primary series?

It occurred to me that maybe one reason old stuffy experts are against recommending boosters for all *cough* Offit *cough* is because they are past the age in which they need to watch after young humans every day.

I’m seeing firsthand with my brother what a “mild” infection in a 37 y/o is - basically feeling like dying but not actually dying hard enough to end up in a hospital

If my wife and I get it at the same time I guess it’s cereal, chicken nuggets, tv and praying the kids don’t cause bodily harm for a week.

Do we know anything more about taking paxlovid too early/as a prophylactic? Like if you can time it correctly, is taking it a day or two later potentially better, or can it not be taken too early? My parents just got got, they both got paxlovid and I advised my dad to just take it even though he hasn't developed symptoms yet. Almost certainly will get it. My brother visited last weekend and immediately came down with symptoms from the concert he had just gone to. It took about a week, but now mom is majorly sick, with strange vision blurring too! I'm assuming my dad is going to get it, both of them only got one booster

Basically should my dad wait a day to take it, or just do it now?

you want your dad's immune system to realize that there's a virus, and begin launching countermeasures, before the paxlovid puts the virus on pause. otherwise putting the situation on pause is for nothing if the good guys don't show up to the battlefield for cleanup at all during the 5 day course

Pfizer tested the prophylactic route and didn't see a significant difference, which I don't think is surprising at all. Nominally speaking, a Pax course that outlasted the infectiousness of a household transmission would probably work, but that is not what we are talking about here and iirc not what Pfizer tested. IF your dad is already infected quicker is better, but it isn't a sure thing your dad is currently infected.

A much better way to minimize or avoid COVID in the meantime would be masking around the house. Because starting an exponential curve on the slow part should give the immune system the best chance. Then start the course if he pops positive or starts having symptoms.

So basically maxwellhill's answer is correct.

What are you basing this on though? I think the prescribing info is just testing positive, regardless of symptoms. I'm not sure if icantfindaname meant exposed or actually positive.

Symptoms under the circumstances is a normal way to diagnose an infection, so I think maxwellhill assumes that the dad hasn't tested positive (as did I from the description). If he's positive he has way beyond enough virions for the immune system to pick it up and the course should start immediately.
