Enough that they don't feel dishonest about that they were drinking while hiding the shame behind a more reasonable amount. Anyone with alcohol abuse also only drinks one beer a night. The number goes up each time a new person has to ask about it as part of their individual intake assessment. (IE the triage nurse is told one beer, the primary nurse is told two beers, the doctor is told three beers (but only sometimes), and then a second nurse comes in to help give meds and during conversation the patient mentions they drink three beers and a handle of vodka a night.)

All you have to do to be accused of lying as a patient is be a woman and mention chronic pain, or pain of any kind. Having been on the other side of this, it disgusts me how ingrained it is to assume the patient is lying.

oh yeah there's "the patient is lying because they clearly have alcohol and foreign objects in their system that do not causally line up with slipping and falling after a single beer" and "the patient is lying because only white men can actually feel pain," and only one of those is funny.

Part 123: Episode 5, Day 2, Trial: Professional Witness And we're back in court! Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture It was a really dense day with a lot of questions and no answers, thank you very much. Seriously though - the day took only five updates, but 656 images. Compare that to episode 4, which had 9 updates for the first day but only 607 images across them all. I've been trying to do about an update per location, but this first day of investigation was a lot heavier at each spot. Everyone's real chatty when there aren't any cartridge space limitations to worry about.... Frankly, there are still a lot of... gray areas. Or rather, the whole thing is one big gray area... I'm ready to accept my fate. I believe in you, sis. Yes? Don't worry, we didn't believe your confession for a second. ...! Sound: Light Bulb Never forget that. Ms. Skye, you... You remind me a lot of Mia. But there is one decisive difference between you and her. And that is? Sound: Realization ... I believe it's almost time for the trial. Good luck, Mr. Wright. (No one's going to bail me out this time...) I am 100% certain that Ema will be helping out. And maybe we'll get to solve a case on our own without ghostly intervention? Sound: Wipe (I'll be alone in there...) There we go. Music: Silence Courtroom Number Nine! Now you're just making up numbers. Sound: Gallery There's Ema beside us, as expected. And Edgeworth across from us... Sound: Gavel Music: Trial The defense is ready, Your Honor. (Edgeworth...) I wonder how long it took for Edgeworth to get back to prosecuting cases. Sound: Realization Yeah, we get it, you're still a dick. ...! The judgment to be made here is in our hands, not those of anyone else. Very well, Mr. Edgeworth, your opening statement please. Not only this, but she was rash enough to commit it in the Prosecutor's Office lot! Oh good, Ema is taking notes. On Edgeworth. Wait, has she always had all those vials on her hip? What is she planning on doing with those? I suddenly feel like confessing to everything! Just in case you missed the old Edgeworth finger-waggle. There was a witness to her crime... Sound: Realization Sound: Gavel Music: Silence Well then, call your first witness, Mr. Edgeworth! (The "Cough-up Queen"...?) Hmm? Haven't I seen you somewhere...? Music: Happy People Sound: Realization Sound: Light Bulb (The judge is really wolfing it down...) Sound: Realization Uh... thanks. Will the witness state her name and profession? Sound: Realization ... So this is why everyone raves about caviar! It's so tasty it hurts! Sound: Whack I see we're just directly bribing the judge now. (What the heck does picked tapioca taste like!?) Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam Name. Profession. Now. I find myself running Lunchland these days. Is... that what you wanted me to say, Mr. Edgeworth? Music: Happy People The prosecution will wait! Sound: Light Bulb I'm not finished eating... (Hurry it up!) Sound: Stab Mmmm... Very well, Mr. Edgeworth. Music: Silence Your Honor, as Mr. Edgeworth has said to the court... Sound: Realization Uh... Huh? What exactly does that mean? She was a first-rate homicide detective. Sound: Whack ... Sound: Objection Let me guess, something happened two years ago... I-I know who you are!!! Cough-up...!? Sound: Realization Sound: Gavel (Just who is this lady!?) If I might have the court's attention over here... Music: Logic and Trick I suppose that's to keep visitors from taking up prosecutor's spaces, yes? Music: Silence And who was this valiant "witness"...? Why, it was me, Your Honor. Sound: Realization This whole setup stinks. Sound: Select Jingle New evidence! Examining it just brings up the two-panel map that Angel already showed us, though. Apparently at some point while talking to Marshall, we finally unlocked the profile for the victim. Having the guy's name be "Goodman" and the description say he was a "good man" is a pretty lazy pun for this game. Witness, did you see the very moment of the crime? Of course, Your Honor. Having the entire case hinge on one individual with a grudge against Edgeworth and/or Lana is pretty sketchy. We'll have to hope there's a hole in her story somewhere. So far my only theory is that Angel and/or Marshall were trying to set up Edgeworth, Lana somehow came across the situation and she decided to take the fall for Edgeworth to make up for covering for/enabling all his bad behavior the last couple years. Which means as we progress down the road of proving Lana innocent, we'll probably initially be making Edgeworth look guilty? Hmm... It seems rather cut and dry, doesn't it? Well, Mr. Wright? Uh... I can't agree on principle, Your Honor. Shall I proceed to crush what little hope they have remaining? The judge is as impartial as ever. (Wait, are they talking about me...!?) Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato Somehow, I always knew a day like this would come. I was on my way to deliver a lunchbox to my boyfriend... Sound: Wipe There's a nice image. So is that how her left hand got injured? She had it on Goodman's chest to show her where to aim, and stabbed him through her own hand? Seems unlikely. Thanks for clarifying which end of the knife was used in the stabbing murder. Unfortunately, I don't see anything we can contradict with what we have right now. Music: Silence Hmph. As you can see... There is no room for doubt. The key "point" of your testimony seems to be nothing other than... So... how does it feel to be so utterly crushed? I... I'm still thinking about that. Nice reference. Very well, Mr. Wright. You may cross-examine the witness. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato It's been awhile, so just reminding everyone that I start the cross with the end-of-testimony pep talk. You said that before. Anything else? (Sound pretty fatal to me.) Sound: Stab Sound: Whack x 2 Let's just keep our heads cool and press the witness a bit, shall we? D-don't smile like that! Sound: Whack Pretty good advice - let's press. Somehow, I always knew a day like this would come. How did you know!? Yet their methods are ugly and twisted. Twisted methods will always lead to tragedy. The lunchlady's uninformed opinion is duly noted. Given that they are used to erasing inconvenient evidence at their whim... ... I felt that I had found my dream job when I became an investigator... Laid off...? Sound: Realization (She was fired...) To me, prosecutors are nothing more than worms. Very well. You may continue, Ms. Starr. That was a rather wordy press for the first line of testimony. We learned why exactly Angel is lying but not anything immediately useful. I was on my way to deliver a lunchbox to my boyfriend... This boyfriend... he's the detective? Sound: Realization Th-"that" boyfriend? You have... several? Care to join? Sound: Realization ... I-I'll stick with the lunches, thanks. Sound: Stab Odd re-use of an investigation sprite here. It looks like she turned away from the court to take her notes. The security guard room is in the lot, in A Block. We really should have gone there on the first day of investigation. See if anyone else saw anything, or if there is security footage of the area. (That would be the room with the "SECURITY" sign.) Since I'm a visitor now, I parked in B Block. Not sure if that helps us yet; Edgeworth's car was right next to the fence separating the two areas. When I sensed something... Perhaps it was my finely-honed detective's intuition at work. It felt like... how would you say... Oh yes... I have no idea what that means. Speaking of a "detective's intuition"... Yes, well, he was like a young cheese. A... young cheese? Hmm... then I must be hard, yellowed, and sharp as a tack. Yeah, with the odor of an old cheese to match. I think the game is trying too hard again. Or maybe it turns out when you have to deal with cartridge limitations you cut out the padded dialogue that doesn't actually contribute to the game. Sometimes dealing with constraints makes for a better game in the end. Through the wire fence, I saw the chief prosecutor standing next to a garish car. By "garish car," you mean... Mr. Edgeworth's car, yes. Sound: Realization M-Mr. Edgeworth's!? Sound: Light Bulb Wasn't it? Sound: Realization ... Indeed, it was. Sound: Gallery Hmm! What an odd case this is. I saw her from no further than thirty feet away. I am certain it was her. Sound: Realization (If she's telling the truth, we're doomed!) Sound: Light Bulb That's some real Mia Fey logic right there. Sound: Desk Slam Witness! In your testimony, you clearly stated the following: Prosecutors are nothing more than worms. Ergo! You are a biased witness! Not your best nitpick, Phoenix. Music: Silence Sound: Realization Huh? Rookie? Sound: Light Bulb Unless you're willing to risk the consequences of doubting me? Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Damage 2 That... That was inspiring! Sound: Light Bulb Ugh the witness directly threatens us and the judge is still just all at her. We need to chip away at something here. Ema you're not helping. Sound: Wipe A picture? Not a great look for Lana with that bloodstained coat, but this photo seems to be missing some key elements... Music: Suspense A-a photograph! Sound: Light Bulb You took this!? Sound: Whack Awfully convenient for you to have a camera at the ready here... (I suppose that's more exciting than just hanging it around your neck.) quote:This line appears to be different in the original DS version of the game: You think I'd show it to you, a prosecutor? Think again. ...! Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Realization Music: Silence Sound: Gavel Sound: Select Jingle (Uh oh, that is unmistakably Lana Skye!) So, what was the defendant doing at the time? quote:Pressing again on this line, repeats the same early dialogue, and then cuts off after the line "I am certain it was her" since we already have the photo. Music: Questioning - Moderato The chief prosecutor was holding a knife in her right hand... Tell me more about this knife that the suspect was carrying. Well, I'd say the blade was about 4 inches long. Er... Ahem, yes, that's about right. Detectives even more so, I would imagine. I'm sure it was easier than boiling an egg for my Egg Salad Surprise Set. Sound: Realization Sound: Desk Slam Hmm? Perhaps a Chicken Salad Set would have been a better metaphor? So, the defendant was holding a knife. What then? Then, she thrust the pointy tip of the knife into Detective Goodman's chest! Tell the court why you didn't try to stop this crime! You did see her raise the knife to strike, no? Hmm... The defense has a point. Too late...? Sound: Stab 2 I.. I see. Well, that was the shortest press of them all. Our total pressing results are a lot of empty words and a new piece of evidence. But we still need to find a contradiction. We have a lot of evidence we can use. But which one reveals the contradiction here?

With heart attacks, it's pretty simple: women don't present with the "classic" symptoms nearly as often as men. It's legit harder to spot it on them because they don't show it anywhere near as dramatically as the typical male that's all sweaty and feels a crushing pain in his chest. Sometimes, it's just feeling weak with some back pain. The pain med bias is absolutely a sexism issue, though.

I agree the food puns are getting tedious. But an interesting (I think) aside! Starr talks about Goodman being like a fresh cheese, a greenhorn - that's where the term 'green cheese' comes from. Not cheese that is green in colour, but an young cheese, a very white cheese... which is where the idea that the moon is made of green cheese comes from!

Part 124: Episode 5, Day 2, Trial: Premeditated Murder There are two reasons that this photo is the right evidence to use here. The in-game reason - there is no knife or victim shown in the photo. The gameplay-reason - we got this evidence during an optional press, so we can't be allowed to proceed without it (no evidence in this game is miss-able). We can also present this photo on either of Ms. Starr's last two lines of testimony. Either way... Music: Silence And you witnessed this? You saw Ms. Skye stab the victim with the knife? Sound: Realization Hmm!!! I'm sure that is a fine lunch! But... isn't that odd? Look at this photograph! Sound: Objection quote:A quick side trip towards a guilty verdict, if we got this one wrong five times in a row: Music: Objection! ... ... ... Ahem. Music: Silence Sound: Light Bulb I guess our claim isn't even worthy of a full voiced line/chat bubble combo. That had to be the weakest "objection" ever, Edgeworth. What do you mean, Mr. Edgeworth? Sound: Realization There's still no victim pictured, but whatever. A-and how can you tell that!? Blood splatter. Sound: Realization Huh? Sound: Light Bulb (But it's a black-and-white photograph!) Sound: Whack Well, Mr. Wright? I see no problem here. No problem... except you. Sound: Whack Of course we're objecting! Sound: Desk Slam Wait! That contradicts what the witness said in her testimony! Sound: Objection quote:Backing off sometimes works... just not here. Music: Objection! Sound: Realization ... ... Music: Silence Th-that's it!? Sound: Stab Sound: Objection I have no idea what we're talking about anymore. I didn't have time to stop her. Prosecutor Skye was cold, calculating, like a robot. Sound: Stab 2 Music: Suspense Thanks Phoenix for grabbing that one on your own. P-premeditated!? How do you know!? Sound: Realization Lots of speculation there, but it also seems like something someone would do if they came across a crime scene. Police probably always have gloves lying around, would prosecutors? Uh... Sound: Realization Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Objection That's a pretty lame argument. Could be any type of gloves for normal wear that she just happened to be wearing or have in her car or purse or something. Sound: Stab 2 Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel These gloves do seem to tell a tale of premeditation! Witness! Add this to your testimony! Music: Questioning - Moderato Well, gently caress. We don't actually get a whole new testimony. Instead we're brought back to the first testimony, with the last two lines (either one that we could have used the crime photo on) replaced by this one. So clearly we're expected to present something else on this line now. But what? Maybe I can press again? Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Desk Slam The gloves were admitted as evidence when the defendant was arrested! Well why the gently caress is that not in the Court Record then!? Where's my new evidence jingle? In other words, when the chief prosecutor came to the crime scene... Sound: Realization Well poo poo, that press certainly didn't help. Music: Silence Everything was planned, it was a premeditated crime! Sound: Objection Arrrrgh! Sound: Stab (This is bad...) (If she can prove this claim, the trial's already over!) Sound: Realization Music: Questioning - Moderato We're given no real hints, and dumped back at the testimony. Which is now over so we get the same "end of testimony" pep talk from Ema as before, and it's just as unhelpful. Dammit, I knew the answer to the last one, I should have just kept going so I could ask for help on this one. It's too early to end the update now. There are a couple of vague options here. Maybe this is a case where multiple options work? The autopsy report is kind of vague on time of death but doesn't really contradict anything here. The knife or the parking slip are better options, since she didn't know she'd have access to Edgeworth's car or the knife within its trunk ahead of the murder? Let's try the knife. It seems a little more directly related. Music: Silence That's a knife. THE knife. Indeed, it is my knife. What's with this case? Sound: Gallery Sound: Gallery Sound: Gallery Sound: Gallery Who's bringing their little kid to a murder trial? Sound: Desk Slam The defense has a request. What's that, Rookie? In your testimony... And that's why she was wearing those special gloves. However! Sound: Realization Sound: Light Bulb Okay, so it's an interesting point and reveals a "contradiction" on her off-the-cuff revised testimony, but does it really matter if it was pre-meditated or not? Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Objection Music: Objection! Sound: Damage 2 That was all it took to break you? We haven't even refuted any actual elements of the crime yet! Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel Order! Order! Order! (Great! Now the tide is turning in our favor!) Sound: Light Bulb ...We have a long way to go, don't we. Wright. Music: Silence Sound: Realization W-what!? I can't believe I like Edgeworth now. He's so much more fun. Not over such a trifling detail! Sound: Stab There are a lot of two-sprite lines coming out of both Edgeworth and Wright in this episode, not just all the new characters. Bah. The prosecution could care less if it was premeditated or not. ! Sound: Light Bulb Very good, Mr. Prosecutor... I suppose you think you're clever now? Sound: Realization If it wasn't, why would she have been wearing... Sound: Gavel I believe I'd like to hear your testimony again. How dare you! Sound: Objection (Really now...) Yeah this lady is a train wreck. Sound: Testimony 2 Hey we finally broke through to the second testimony. Music: Questioning - Moderato Lana Skye intended to murder Detective Goodman! I'm sure the Chief Prosecutor had a grudge against the victim. Yeah, okay. Music: Silence It does sound a lot like premeditation, doesn't it!? Thank you! In any case, the defense may now cross-examine the witness. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato (Ms. Starr has turned out to be as short-tempered as she looked when we met her.) The short wick burns out the fastest! It's a scientific fact! I mean, add more wax and even a really short wick will burn longer... Sound: Realization ... I really don't need to, but let's get to pressing. Lana Skye intended to murder Detective Goodman! Sound: Desk Slam You've said that, but you haven't told us how you know! Sound: Whack Sound: Whack I believe what she just said was a mere prelude to the story she is about to tell. Try not to interrupt her again. Rookie.. Sound: Objection (Something's half-baked here alright, and it's you!) Now, why did you believe the suspect had intentions to murder the victim? Her actions speak for themselves! That's why she called the victim all the way to the Prosecutor's Office. You have no proof that Ms. Skye called him there! You have no proof that she didn't! Sound: Realization Hmm... Mr. Edgeworth, thoughts? She might have written him a letter! Sound: Realization (C'mon! You could have tried "public phone" first, at least!) Do people under the age of like 20 know what public phones were? I'm sure he had a reason to be there. Witness? I'm sure the Chief Prosecutor had a grudge against the victim. Sound: Desk Slam What kind of "grudge"!? Well, I wouldn't know that. Sound: Whack Rookie... Music: Silence Sound: Realization H-how am I supposed to know!? Sound: Stab See? We agree there is a lunchbox here, but we don't know what's inside! Sound: Realization I-I get it! That's why my lunch was so salty! Sound: Light Bulb Music: Questioning - Moderato (This judge isn't very good with metaphors...) This entire testimony feels very skippable. Will you tell us your basis for thinking this? It's simple... Nothing else could drive that human machine to plunge the knife in again and again... A "human machine"!? That's a contradiction! Sound: Objection Please... I'm on Team Edgeworth for this testimony. Phoenix, step your pressing game up. Note to self: Mr. Edgeworth's sighs smell like citrus fruit. Umm... You say "again and again"... how many times did she stab him, exactly? What difference does it make if the deed is done!? Sound: Objection And yet, that's the part we're going to have to object to... (How come she's getting mad at me!?) Sound: Stab (Leave it at that!? This is a murder case, people!) Sound: Light Bulb This testimony really doesn't need the kid gloves, game. You would have had to really not been paying attention when we got the autopsy report to have not figured this one out. Music: Silence You say she stabbed him again and again... But you couldn't have witnessed that! Sound: Objection Are you testing me...? Then I'll test you! Sound: Objection Sound: Realization Edgeworth isn't even pretending that his witness is making any sense. I know he's on the other side but we really need to get him some better witnesses. ...!? Sound: Light Bulb W-what do you mean? I shouldn't have to explain this... But, take a look. ...Why is Edgeworth the one showing this? Ah hah! You're right! Sound: Stab 2 Music: Telling the Truth Good show, Mr. Edgeworth! What a hunk! Sound: Light Bulb He's my hero, really. Well, witness? This game is really over-using this dynamic sprite business. We got it after three examples, move on already. You got the Crime Scene Set, right? Sound: Realization Uh... oh, thanks. Sound: Light Bulb But now, I realize that such mistakes are possible. So... You're saying you mistook something... for blood? Sound: Realization That's why I thought she must have stabbed him at least twice. That doesn't make any loving sense. Music: Silence Sound: Gavel ... Music: Questioning - Moderato We don't get a whole new testimony, just this one line replacing her last line of testimony. So we press again... Her red muffler? So she can be easily hanged at a moment's notice, I suppose... Says the woman with a collar around her neck... (She's right...) Sound: Wipe Sound: Realization Okay, I like how the flashback started out grayscale and then faded into color on mentioning "red", that's a good use of the more dynamic dialogue. But wait... ... Well, people often mistake my beard... For a bib. Sound: Light Bulb Actually... However, the autopsy report is clear on this matter. Edgeworth shutting down his own witness is always fun. ... Mr. Wright! This is our chance!!! Chance for what, I wonder...? We repeat the end of testimony scene again here, because what we really need to do is present something again. Two testimonies in a row where we have to present twice, but it feels more like padding than really adding to the experience here. So, what's it going to be this time?

Part 125: Episode 5, Day 2, Trial: Starr Witness That's right. We're using the crime photo for the second time already. Why? I don't see a muffler or a scarf on Lana, do you? Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam Ms. Starr! I demand an explanation! W-what!? Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Realization Edgeworth is stealing our thunder again. Against his own witness. He seems to really dislike Ms. Starr almost as much as she hates prosecutors. Was he the one to get her fired? Wouldn't he have just gotten out of law school at that time two years ago? Sound: Objection Music: Telling the Truth Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Stab Only a professional lunchlady could be so utterly clueless. Hmm! Harsh words! But good! Sound: Realization (What was my objection, chopped liver!?) Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence Well now, where were we? Have we gotten anywhere? I'm not sure we have. Wh-what!? Sound: Gavel You saw the crime, and apprehended the suspect... Tell us about that. ...... Very well. I do remember some things accurately, at least. Sound: Realization This sequence is weird. It basically proceeds as if we'd never objected to anything from her original testimony. She just continues as if nothing had happened. Which just makes me feel like the last two updates have been a waste of time. The most important part...? Sound: Realization Well I sure hope so, we've been running in circles so far. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Allegro Well, hitting Allegro is a good sign. Let's see what Ms. Starr has to say this time... I quickly caught her, explained her rights to her, and arrested her on the spot. That's what had me confused in my earlier testimony! Music: Silence Yeah I'm not buying any of that. I strike like a snake and bite like a cobra! That's me. Angel Starr. Don't bother me with details, unless you want to get bitten! Sound: Objection N-no thanks! Sound: Objection ...Who isn't? (Note: This line was apparently "Note to self: Attorney Wright gets bitten by snake" in the original DS release. Probably a translation error that got cleaned up in the HD release?) The chief prosecutor tried to resist, but her efforts were in vain. She knocked my hands aside, kicked over an oil drum... A-an oil drum? (Hard to imagine...) Sound: Realization Very well, Mr. Wright. Your cross-examination, if you will. No sweat. Sound: Testimony 2 Cross #3, go! Music: Questioning - Allegro (So Ms. Skye tried to run?) Not as sorry as I am. But she didn't do it! You have to believe me! Not much help there, but we don't need it on this one. I don't think I even need to press, but might as well do it anyway. After the murder, the suspect attempted to run behind a partition off to her side. (That's right...) Forget the wall, what about the chain-link fence separating Angel and Lana? She was obviously trying to hide herself. And what did you do then? I quickly caught her, explained her rights to her, and arrested her on the spot. You say "quickly"... were you close to the suspect? As I just said! I was only 30 feet away from her the whole time. Sound: Realization Have to keep going! Music: Silence Music: Logic and Trick Rather than objecting on this line of testimony and presenting the map, we are apparently going to resolve this contradiction in the press. Sound: Realization That would make it about 30 feet from the car, yes. Is that correct, Ms. Starr? Y-yes, that's right. I went over it, of course. Sound: Realization Amazing! The Cough-up Queen, lunchlady athlete, indeed. Sound: Light Bulb Okay, apparently we're just going to gloss over that one. So she couldn't have gotten to my sister THAT fast... (So how did Ms. Skye not get away?) Sound: Realization Shock? Or she didn't do it so didn't think to run? Or she wanted to get caught, given her subsequent confession? Music: Silence We don't get anything new out of that one, it just goes back to the next line of testimony for more crossing. Music: Questioning - Allegro quote:Here's what backing off looks like: Ah yes. When I arrested her, she mentioned the muffler! She mentioned the muffler? What exactly did she say? Sound: Realization (Cheeky!) Anyway, all I heard her say was the word "muffler." Just that one word? Sound: Realization Yes. The chief prosecutor was talking on her phone! We know Lana was talking to Ema. And that Ema claimed that nothing was said, that Lana hung up right away. I think we should start trying to figure out what our clients are lying to us about, and why. Yes, ultimately. Ultimately? Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Realization N-no, the court doesn't see, Ms. Starr. Sound: Light Bulb I appreciate that no one else understands Angel's goofy metaphors either. Apparently young salmon memorize their home stream smells and when they're swimming around in the ocean and come across it again, they swim back upstream to go reproduce (and die). So I guess it means she has a good memory? Except... her earlier testimonies kind of discount that claim. On the wall? Apparently, it was out of order. And so she used her cell phone? Hmm. Good witnessing, witness! (Good witnessing? What ever happened to good testifying?) Sound: Gavel The things I do to please this rookie defense attorney. Sound: Select Jingle Not sure what to make of that one yet. But the word "muffler" can also refer to a part on the exhaust pipe of a car... We get a new line of testimony, so let's press on it. Ah hah! I was going to ask the same thing! Sound: Light Bulb quote:Before we revisit the same topic, let's see what leaving the phone call alone gets us... quote:The new line of testimony actually replaces the one after the one on which we pressed, so here's the results of pressing on the replaced line: Music: Silence Music: Logic and Trick The chief prosecutor stabbed the victim, and ran behind the partition. Sound: Shock 2 Then, when I boldly grabbed her arm... Music: Silence Sound: Bip 2 Sound: Realization ...? Sound: Light Bulb What is it, Mr. Wright? Holy poo poo game, leave something to the player, will you? Moving on to the final line to cross... The chief prosecutor made to escape, but against Angel Starr resistance is futile! She "made to escape"... Can you be more specific? She brushed aside my hand and ran! (Huh?) She even kicked over an oil drum at me! A-an oil drum!? Sound: Realization But, it's strange... Hmm? What's that? Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Realization Edgeworth seems more interested in tearing down his own witness than winning the case so far. Or maybe he's just working a new strategy, where if he can nitpick things before we can, we never get any momentum going? Sound: Light Bulb Yeah, why would she run herself into a dead-end at the fence? Although apparently this fence is real easy to quickly climb over... Th-that's right! ... Excellent! More mysteries! I wish we could solve a few before finding more, though... The hints are rather obvious on this one. We seem to have a perspective issue here. Namely: How could she have seen what was going on behind that partition, while sitting in B Block? I'm pretty sure she was actually in the Security Room, though I'm not convinced she would've been able to see everything going on by Edgeworth's car very well from up there. Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam Note: This objection only works if we had pressed fully on Ms. Starr's second line of testimony, getting her to talk about being 30 feet away and going over the fence. Without that having been done, we just take a generic penalty here instead. I don't think there have been any such "conditions" on successfully objecting before. The witness is a former detective. Her testimony is unmarred by personal bias. Note the lack of energy with which Edgeworth tries to defend his witness. Sound: Realization Pictured: The witness admitting she has a personal grudge against Ms. Lana Skye. ... Well, Ms. Starr... Sound: Realization Music: Suspense Hmph! I don't know what you're talking about. Sound: Objection Ahem. Let's look at the floor plans. However, if that's true... Sound: Wipe Music: Silence Sound: Drama Pound ...! Sound: Light Bulb I believe you see what I'm getting at. Sound: Wipe Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Objection Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered Wha... Sound: Damage 2 I do enjoy her lunches flying up out of her bag there. Sound: Gallery Order! Order! What is the meaning of this? Sound: Whack It's simple, Your Honor. Sound: Objection Grrr! Sound: Stab 2 The only thing Edgeworth likes more than making Ms. Starr look incompetent is doing the same to Phoenix. Tell us exactly what lie this witness has told the court! (Here's where the counter-attack begins! I can't afford to get this wrong!) Penalty here, so choose carefully!

I have to say that actually looking at it, that partition is in a really awkward place. Even the with tiniest cars, it looks like you'd have a rough time getting and out of that particular parking space, even without those oil drums in the way.

Actually, maybe one point of this whole testimony is to establish Edgeworth's new prosecuting style? He was openly coaching witnesses in case 2, and holding his cards pretty close in case 3 until his face turn at the end, and now he's stealing half of your objections. That is a better explanation for Starr being such a mess than anything else I can think of.

Starr, on the other hand, is an outright hostile witness. Forget coordinating with the prosecutor before the trial; she pointedly withheld evidence from the official case while investigating on her own because of how thoroughly she distrusts the prosecutor's office. I can't say her involvement is more begrudging than, say, Dee Vasquez, but pushing her vendetta against Lana Skye is clearly more important to Starr than the practicalities of Edgeworth's trial technique. Edgeworth was only willing to tolerate Starr's shenanigans when she wasn't actively damaging his case, and he doesn't have much to lose by cutting her down if it'll let him wrest control back from Starr while denying Phoenix any momentum. He's seen Phoenix's work from both sides now, so he knows how important it is to actively maneuver around to cut Phoenix off.
