Childen of Bodom and Opeth are how I got into the more extreme metal. Always have a soft spot for them both. Tokyo Warhearts(Live album) is so loving good. Those first 4 studio albums are so good too. edit: gently caress it, gonna listen to Tokyo Warhearts now

I always get children of bodom and cradle of filth confused because they were both big around the same time (in my area at least) and I listened to neither of them Needled 24/7 is a jam tho

"Ghost of Perdition" is what got my partner into metal and now six months later it's all Allegaeon, First Fragment, and Archspire. It sure is a slippery slope. Also at the very first orchestra hit of Follow the Reaper she said "I'm in" and I knew I picked a winner.

I caught Children of Bodom on an off-date headlining show on their 2004 Lamb of God tour, in a tiny local venue that only fit a few hundred people. Janne Wirman was playing so hard that he broke off a key on his keyboard and it flew into the audience. Hate their music if you want, they had a top-tier live show e: still hilarious that the title track of Hate Crew Deathroll ripped off two separate Dissection songs though Vulture Culture fucked around with this message at 17:37 on Sep 13, 2023 |

Children of Bodom also have one of the goofiest videos I've ever seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXwVf9gS9Vw Keyboard playing drinking a brown bag beer while just playing one handed. Weird horror movie vibe that doesn't really make sense. Weird motion cuts. Alexi Spitting multiple times. The camera showing Alexi's headstock during solos. It's so bad it's good. The actual song rules though. That riff tho Malaria fucked around with this message at 18:01 on Sep 13, 2023 |

Bodom was part of my first metal show (Gigantour '08) and are definitely among the cream of the "gateway band" crop.

I think I saw CoB on the 2008 tour in Atlanta. I was right up at the stage dead center on Alexi. He threw a pick that hit my friend in the chest. He still has that pick to this day. I also remember Wirman having a bunch of bras hung on his keyboard stand.

yeah just because they put cowboy in the title it doesn't actually seem like anything a cowboy would listen to. any cowboys itt confirm/deny? was groove metal the first to popularize/introduce stepdad angst to metal?

it did fill a niche that was very much unfilled in 1990. either you liked hair metal and adjacent bands, or you liked thrash metal and maybe dipped into the nascent "extreme" metal genres like death metal or whatever. there was not really a spot for metal music that made you want to fight your stepdad.
