MRAZZLE DAZZLE

Hate Crew was my first CoB album. I think Follow the Reaper is their best in general, but I love each of the first four albums in different ways. They all capture a specific mood for me.

Edit:

Just gonna throw this out here as my current favorite track from the new Alkaloid:

Those riffs are just so loving sick.

I think I heard Yngwie before CoB, and then I first heard CoB (maybe it was Red Light In My Eyes? The one that was a Mozart cover?) And I thought WHOA this classical sounding metal can get even sleazier??? And the rest of my metal journey was history...

Red Light Pt 2. The riff is Confutatis Maledictus.

The actual Yngwie worship is last 2 minutes of The Nail.

Another Edit: The spoken word intro from Warheart is from Amadeus. "From now on we are enemies, you and I"

i think thats a consensus for a lot of people and why maggot stomp was so popular for a bit (before all their artists getting poached by century media)

Bodom's first 3 albums are specifically the neoclassical style of power metal, so if the 2 power metal bands on earth that you like include Stratovarius, the first 4 Sonata Arctica albums, or Japanese stuff like Galneryus you're in luck. If you are wanting Blind Guardian style pm then no, they are not like that.

Blind Guardian is definitely one of the few power bands I like and Stratovarius is definitely not so ehhh

Vargatron posted:

I would describe the first 4 CoB album progression like this:

Something Wild: death metal version of a Yngwie Malmsteen album. Free form songwriting.
Hatebreeder: Neoclassical death metal with a black metal tinge. Faster tempos with more structured songs.
Follow the Reaper: Transitional album with power metal influences coming to the forefront. Neoclassical tinges are lessened.
Hate Crew Deathroll: Death metal with power metal stylings as a focus. Neoclassical elements are almost completely gone.

Hatebreeder has the thinnest production drum production out of the four. Hate Crew Deathroll is the best produced.

Maybe I’ll check out the fourth one and see how it goes

Got a ton of good cuts like this on Hate Crew.

Follow the Reaper has really good tracks too if you're into power metal style stuff. It's like mid tempo power metal on some tracks.

They have been adamant for years that Protest the Hero is not in any way, shape, or form a metal band and therefore has not earned a spot on the pantheon, but here check out all these ambient pagan post-black metal folk acts that are just birdsong, a lute, and an 80's synth pad.

That being said, their "Similar Artists" page is a loving godsend, I've found so many great bands there.

It's honestly more interesting to see what metalcore bands are allowed for whatever reason. Or when they smugly say something like Meshuggah only qualifies because of their early work, since djent of course is not metal (unclear what it's a subgenre of otherwise).
