IDK I don't think that's super common. The fantasy I see is far more heroic than that: that if they lived in Shadowrun, they wouldn't be a corpo they'd be a street samurai. They'd be a badass romantic cool hero and not an extra who may or may not die from a random stray bullet.

The obvious problem with this is the most common and annoying problem with scifi fandoms, which is treating the fiction as non-fiction speculation rather than a deliberate mirror on the present. If you are a white collar guy in the US in 2023, you'd be a white collar guy in Shadowrun too, and if you really had it in you to be a shadowrunner you'd be a career criminal already.

I guess I meant escapist fantasy rather than utopian, I don't play any of these games, I just watch the hype trains gain speed and then crash into the brick wall of by-corporate-committee enforced generic storytelling (and promised features not arriving)

It's just Spore over and over.

Taeke
Feb 2, 2010

I mean, I kinda get what you're going for and CP2077 was a buggy mess at launch but with all the patches it redeemed itself in my opinion and is a great game now, and while it doesn't really do anything new plotwise if you're familiar with the genre and have read novels and poo poo (so far, I think I'm about halfway through) I wouldn't call it unoriginal either and it's executed pretty drat well. Memorable characters that I actually care about, pretty good pacing where I can leave the main story aside for a spell to do side quests without feeling it breaks the flow of the game or narrative, driving is a bit meh but the shooting and stealth is enjoyable, etc.

It's not a perfect game but it's also not the dumpster fire it was at first, like at all.

There's a huge update/overhaul coming next week, I think, and I'm excited to start a new run and actually finishing the game.

I think your perception the game is wrong because you saw the initial reception and memes and poo poo, but it's definitely worth a try if you're at all interested in the genre.

It's entirely different from Spore because while it was hosed at launch, they worked their asses off to deliver on their promises and actually have even if it did take them a long time.

E:
Now that I think about it:
I'm fairly easily entertained (deliberately so) where I can enjoy media despite its flaws because I just go with it and I'm maybe a bit more tolerant when it comes to intent vs. execution or whatever, but I've noticed a lot of people are much less so and are heavily influenced by social media and poo poo even before they experience the media themselves.

It's gotten to the point where I have to deliberately ignore social media and poo poo about something I'm even vaguely interested in because like when a movie comes out it either has to be a masterpiece or hit just the right note, because otherwise it'll get completely trashed online for whatever reason, and all that negativity surrounding the product will negatively impact my enjoyment of it when I watch it (months) later.

A perfectly fine 6/10 movie that I'd enjoy on a sunday night before going to bed will be portrayed as the worst poo poo ever because it's not a 9/10 and has some flaws. I'd still be critical and notice the flaws but also, whatever, good effort and I enjoyed it and it passed the time just fine, not everything has to be a life changing experience, you know?

I think the internet and the hive mind, social media outrage click bait culture has genuinely damaged our capacity to just enjoy things, which is pretty cyberpunk and very sad.

I never really played Deus Ex (but it's been on my list of old games to play for ages, same with Planescape Torment) but I enjoy the open world of 2077. Often when I played in the evening, it's getting late and I'm getting less sober and want to call it quits I tag the next mission I want to do and instead of fast traveling there I just take a drive and enjoy the scenery and music.

Now that the random NPCs aren't super repetitive and just T-posing all the time and actually behave like people it's very enjoyable.

E: I also enjoy that when I'm doing a side mission to infiltrate some hotel or whatever to steal something I can look around and a block over I can just climb and double jump poo poo to get to the floor I want to without having to bother with the security on the main floor and poo poo.
