Interesting, just about all our stuff has shown up in these for a while now. Then again there's a distribution center pretty nearby so that may help.

The ones where he gets old trucks and busses running and driving are a fun watch too. I thought my crap was bad, he's dealing with trying to move something much larger with air brakes that won't release.

Looks like Amazon has an exclusive contract with Rivian for those vans. I wonder what benefits the DSPs who lease the things are seeing out of the deal so far. Fuel is always going to be a big expense, but running unproven trucks hard could incur larger expenses if they end up being unreliable. I guess Amazon has used the things for a couple years, so I hope they've ironed out any problems they have.

I'd be a bit wary of forced leases on delivery vehicles, if that's what they're doing. Flowers Baking Company (Nature's Own, Bunny, Tastykake, etc. depending on region) tried forcing new independent operators (I/Os) to lease gasser Isuzu/GMC cabovers that ended up having major transmission problems at very low mileage. I saw entire rows of them mouldering away behind depots in Florida while they unfucked those contracts. Some I/Os didn't even bother using them, despite their own trucks being (somewhat more reliable) trash, and having to pay leasing costs on the new trucks. Sucked for the people that did keep them and got stuck replacing the transmission at less than 50,000 miles!

Last mile is a motherfucker. It's hard on people and hard on equipment. Even harder when many companies in America want to subcontract the work out to avoid those nasty, nasty unions. At least if a company truck burns down they'll send someone out with a new one. As an I/O, they'll try to give you no help and charge you if they have to.

Last P/L showed 10 billion in cash, with a much decreased net loss with a resonable prediction of break even next year. They are looking like delivering 50,000 vehicles this year with 50% growth in sales with a decline in CAPEX as they finish build out of production facilities

They are doing okay for a car maker startup.

After Tesla, Rivian is the only one with an order book and manufacturing capacity to attempt long term profitablity. They're retrofitting the Amazon delivery truck tech/drive units into their passenger vehicles which ought to dramatically improve parts availability long term. The only reason I can get parts for my quirky Citroen is the fact that they continued to use that engine in their work vans through the 70s

Over in the ev thread I have a post about a uniforms delivery van I saw stop off at the old folks home near my house. Nurses scrubs maybe. Anyways it was a classic UPS truck looking thing except it had an electric drive train. And that thing was quick

Delivery trucks and city busses are the ideal electric vehicle, they do the same route daily with little variation you know exactly how much range you need, lots of short bits lots of stops lots of city driving. China is big time investing in electric busses. The rest of the world will catch up here in 5-10 years

I'm in DFW. We have like 3 distribution centers spread across the metroplex. This is only the second one of these I've seen, so far. I don't live in the upscale part, though, so... The two I've seen are in Las Colinas, AKA the fancy part of Irving, TX, where the Dallas Cowboys training center is.

Altered, yes, but the original design was a Gasser-style lifted straight axle in the front. Actually, it was stock height ZJ stuff, but that is a lifted straight axle...
e: f,b.
Also, note that it is a manual transmission! The chassis he used was an original (rare!) manual ZJ that he bought for the manual trans stuff, and was going to scrap the chassis due to rust. This is better.

Rivian chat: My friend just bought one and while I thought they were always really cool, seeing it in person and driving it was next level neato for me.

Some weird personality quirk makes me assume these things are like toys and not really actual useable vehicles until I get to experience one in person. The same friend also has a Model S, I thought the same thing years ago when he got it.

He then proceeded a few days later to drive the truck across the country (PA to San Francisco). Once the supercharger network is open to non-tesla cars and adapters are available, it will make these trucks that much more attractive. I don't think he had much of an issue charging along 80, but here in rural PA the non-supercharger charging network isn't the best.

I definitely wouldn't mind an electric vehicle of some kind in the future as most of my traveling is shortish distances (or not at all) and we'd always have an ICE vehicle for longer trips. But the financially responsible part of me can't do it now when I have other things I'd prioritize spending money on.

I saw one of those in a parking lot last week and it looks great in person. Probably wouldn't get one because of a lack of dealerships/repair facilities near me at this point.

If the Charger Banshee is what Dodge says it will be it won't and I can find a buyer for my Challenger that makes it more affordable, I'm in on it. There are a lot of MOPARians that are super upset about the ICE going away and I'm hoping that the letter from Dodge saying that mine is the only one they made in 2019 with the options I chose will help the resale value. I know it isn't a true 1 of 1 (I've had plenty of car assholes remind me of that, LOUDLY), I think it's still cool and someone else might too.

I've seen a few of them out and about now - even saw an R1S - and I still think they're sharp. I feel like if Rivian survives and gets production numbers nice and healthy that a Maverick-sized version would sell like hotcakes.

They share the niche with the Honda Ridgeline for people who want a pickup but don't want ANGERY FACE SMASH U UP. The Hyundai pickup and Maverick also fit in there. It's a popular market segment, but it doesn't get the small dick energy marketing the regular full-size market receives.
